This is my photo in celebration of Vlogbrothers’ 1000th video! If you’re a Nerdfighter, you may want to stop to read this. The owner of the Facebook group Vlogbrothers’ 1000th Video has decided that everybody who wants to should submit their favourite Vlogbrothers memory so that we can make a video of them and give something back to John and Hank. You can submit yours in the form of a video (no more that 10 seconds long), or a photo of you holding a sign. You’ll need to join the Facebook group and then email your submissions to sc2sday@gmail.com. Please spread the word!

Nerdfighters: The Musical! Coming to a screen near you from the down under! Us Australian Nerdfighters have been anxiously prepping for this over the past few months and it is with great pride that we can finally say what we’ve been working on. More details out soon on all of our sites, whether that be here on the Tumblr, over on Twitter, cruising on YouTube, chilling on the Facebook page, or even on the musical’s site!

So! Stay tuned for more updates and in the mean time, you can follow our whole journey from pre-production to the final product.

Equality FTW

The Harry Potter Alliance has organized a campaign called Equality FTW. They’re raising money to continue the awesome work they’ve done to ensure equal opportunity for all kinds of neglected populations: from undocumented immigrants to LGBTQ people to children in underserved community.

There are several cool perks: You can get a wizard rock Hank EP or the first 6,000 words of my abandoned story THE SEQUEL or (as I chose) get the Potter Puppet Pals to hold a sign with your name on it.

But most importantly, you’ll be giving to an organization that has meant a lot to nerdfighteria for a long time (they facilitated many of the early Projects for Awesome) and also meant a lot to Esther Earl (the HPA also has partnered with This Star Won’t Go Out).

So they’ve helped us a lot over the years. Please join me in helping them continue the fight for equal rights and equal access.

Anyway, while I was crowdsurfing—I was out there for quite a while—I had time to think about some things:

1. The Harry Potter fandom is uniquely wonderful, and the greatest luck of my professional life is probably that so many HP fans became early nerdfighters, because the whole culture of nerdfighteria came not primarily from us but from those early nerdfighters.

2. Although it is hard for me to express it in a meaningful, individual way, I am really grateful to everyone who identifies as a nerdfighter. We’ve done so much amazing stuff together that none of us could ever have done alone.

3. I love being a nerdfighter, and I love being a nerd, and I seeing people be so honestly themselves is such an inspiration to me.

4. How are all these people—many of whom are very small—holding me aloft?

5. The metaphor here is too obvious.

6. There’s probably a better, more interesting metaphor that I’m not thinking of.

7. I guess the real metaphor is not you-can-only-make-stuff-if-people-hold-you-up; the real metaphor here is that together-things-happen-that-can-never-happen-alone, which is a very important thing for an introverted and socially anxious person like me to realize. I guess these days this is a politically charged statement, but it seems to me manifestly true: You make nothing alone. Human beings are not mere competitors, and human life is not merely competition. We are collaborators. To be human is to catch the falling person.

This is why I love the VlogBrothers. I was dreading going back school in two weeks, but once again one of the Green’s helped me realize the privilege I have to GET to go back to school in two weeks. I may hate dragging myself out of bed every morning, putting on a uniform and sit through 7 hours of droning but I have to look at the bigger point to this monotony: It’s making me a better person so I can help make this place a better world.

English and Literature is teaching me how to tell my story in a classical and articulate way so someone, somewhere wants to listen.

History teaches me where we as people have come from and what I can do to contribute to not make the same mistakes again.

Science teaches me what a beautiful engine the human body is and and all of the wonderful things that can be created with science to make the world suck that much less.

That’s VlogBrothers, you made me look within myself yet again.
