i love how accurately nora portrayed jean

I don't understand why people are surprised by this????

If anything, after all Jean has been through, this was the most NORMAL reaction to sudden proximity/contact I've ever seen him have????

Jeremy was "crouched over" Jabberwocky and "tipped in" to kiss Jab on the head. Then he "obediently sat back on his heels"

Jeremy wasn't looming over Jean, he was at eye level with him, and Jean had 0 issues with his Jabberwocky antics (beside finding them ridiculous)

The problem was, SPECIFICALLY, the act of tipping even lower and getting close to his crotch unexpectedly.

For a moment, all Jean could see was a head leaning over him

Jean is a survivor of extremely violent and continuous SA, he can't always control or PREDICT his reactions to things

This was a prime example

He probably didn't even know something like this could be a trigger, especially in a situation where he feels safe and is having fun

Generally speaking Jean has little issue with physical touch from his friends. He accepts kisses, hugs, hands on his cheeks or hair without batting an eye. He initiates contact at times. He even lets Jeremy lean against his back, on his own bed, in a moment when he's feeling emotionally vulnerable.

It was a sudden, unpredictable action from Jeremy that might have turned sexual that triggered him

Of course we know it would have never been sexual, they were playing around with Jab, Cat and Laila

But Jean's mind doesn't always follow logic, and it associates certain gestures with sexual contact, and sexual contact with pain

And right after he takes Jab back onto his lap because he needs "a barricade between them"

After all the SA he's been through, this was the most normal reaction I've ever seen from him 🤷🏾‍♀️

I'm once again begging people to put shipping aside and focus on Jean's psyche 🙏🏾🙏🏾

my mind keeps going back to the fact that once andrew found out about what grayson had done to jean he HAD to ask if the same had happened to neil during the time he was forced to stay with the ravens too... he loves neil so much it actually makes me sick. can't imagine the terror he probably felt thinking about the possibility of neil going through the same pain and humiliation he himself went

thinking about how kevin day doesn’t truly have something to lean back on, other than exy and drinking. its what he grew up knowing. he relies on andrew but it will never fulfill him, he gets to know wymack but it doesn’t make up for lost time.

so it seems that a huge portion of the fandom has reached the conclusion that renee is “fake nice”. this is probably a direct result of neil’s narration—the narrator didn’t trust her to actually be a good person, so the readers didn’t trust her either. this was compounded by the fact that renee herself said that she was “a bad person trying [her] best to be a good person.”

now, first of all, neil’s narration is obviously incredibly biased. neil had known like one genuinely nice person in the past (coach hernandez) and this person wasn’t exactly overtly nice either. renee was kind. to him, people like her couldn’t exist because they couldn’t survive (re: his life on the run with his mother), so her kindness must have been a façade for something worse. this doesn’t mean that he was right, it just reflects the depth of his character and his own perceptions of other people

secondly, “i am a bad person trying my best to be a good person” isn’t reflective of renee’s, i don’t know, good-person-ness; she’s calling herself a person who has done bad things in the past, and a person who’s trying to do better things now. her primary intention is to be kind. trying to be better is not the same as pretending to be good

also, the fact that she tries her best to help people (andrew, jean) isn’t because she wants them to think she’s a good person, it’s because she knows what it’s like to feel like you have no one in your corner, and so she wants to make sure she can stop as many people from feeling that way as she can. if wymack has become the person that could have saved him when no one did, renee has become the person that did save her

i totally understand those who don’t ship allison and renee but i love the idea of them two together. i love the idea of both of them getting someone to lean and rely on, to confide in instead of always being the side plot
