Speech on Peace and the Hiroshima-Nagasaki Incident
𝐆𝐔𝐑𝐔 𝐏𝐑𝐀𝐊𝐒𝐇
Good morning everyone,
I am Guru Prakash of class 10A, and today I stand before you to talk about a topic of immense importance: peace, commemorated especially during Peace Week, from August 6th to August 12th each year. This week is dedicated to remembering one of the most tragic moments in human history—the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki during World War II in 1945.
Let me briefly take you through the context of those dark days. In 1939, World War II erupted. The United States initially chose to remain neutral, while Japan aggressively sought to expand its territory. Looking for dominance in Southeast Asia, Japan launched a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, hoping to weaken the American fleet and remove opposition. Japan wrongly assumed America would negotiate rather than fight, given the huge cost of war. However, the attack compelled the USA to enter the war, leading to a fierce conflict between both nations.
After years of brutal fighting, Japan refused to surrender. In a desperate and devastating act, the United States dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. This uranium-based bomb, the first nuclear weapon ever used in warfare, exploded with the force of 15 kilotons of TNT. Temperatures soared above 7,000°C—hotter than the sun’s surface. The blast killed about 70,000 people instantly. By the year’s end, over 100,000 lives were lost due to radiation and injuries.
Yet Japan did not surrender. So, on August 9, 1945, the United States dropped a second atomic bomb—this time nicknamed "Fat Man"—on Nagasaki. This plutonium-239 bomb detonated with a force of 21 kilotons of TNT, killing more than 40,000 people instantly and bringing the total casualties in Nagasaki to about 70,000. These two bombings remain the only times nuclear weapons have been used in war. Only after this unimaginable devastation did Japan announce its surrender on August 15, 1945, and formally signed it on September 2, 1945.
These events mark a tragic chapter in human history—a chapter that reminds us of the unbearable consequences of war. Our respected Principal, 𝗠𝗿𝘀 𝗦𝗮𝗯𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗕𝗮𝗻𝘂 𝗜𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗵𝗶𝗺, has often elucidated the profound impact of war and its consequences. She has highlighted the urgent need for peaceful resolutions among nations, emphasizing that only peace can save countless innocent souls from suffering and loss. Her words remind us that fostering peace is not just the responsibility of leaders, but of every one of us, as global citizens.
Peace Week, especially in schools, is meaningful not only to recall the horror of these events but also to educate us, the young generation, about the supreme importance of peace, unity, and mutual understanding. It was after such widespread devastation that peace organizations began to emerge, with the United Nations as the most significant.
The United Nations came into being on October 24, 1945, initially with 51 member countries. Today, it has grown to 193 member states, with South Sudan being the youngest member, joining in 2011. Virtually every country is part of the UN, except for a few such as Palestine and Vatican City. The main objective of the United Nations is to foster global peace and cooperation. It has 15 specialized agencies, each devoted to a specific cause for humanity’s welfare.
Among its major efforts are the Seventeen Sustainable Development Goals, the UN Global Compact’s Ten Principles, the Green Commodity Program, Global Marine Commodities, the Food and Power Initiative, and private sector engagement. All these initiatives share a single, noble goal: to unite humanity for a brighter future, where the horrors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki are never repeated.
As students and future citizens, it is vital for us to understand that:
“The so-called smartest creature is the only creature to massacre its own kind.”
Let us not fight over imaginary borders or be blinded by hatred. Instead, let us strive for unity, brotherhood, and teamwork—the qualities that can advance civilization to new heights. The Hiroshima tragedy is not just a sad story; it is a powerful lesson. We must let its message of peace guide our actions and our hearts.
Remember: Peace is not just the absence of war, but the presence of understanding, compassion, and respect. The tragedy of Hiroshima and Nagasaki teaches us the terrible cost of hatred and violence. Today, let us pledge to be the voices of harmony, the hands that help, and the hearts that heal. The future truly is in our hands—let us make it a future of peace.
As Albert Einstein wisely said:
“Peace cannot be kept by force; it can only be achieved by understanding.”
Thank you.
