Overview of Locations
Tumblr media
USK10x10SG this year takes us into the beautiful greenery of southwestern Singapore, in sections of the Southern Ridges and the coast.
We are grateful to S P Jain School of Global Management for hosting us in their Singapore campus; workshops will be conducted there and in Hort Park, Labrador Nature Reserve, and Gillman Barracks.
Urban Sketchers 10x10 2019 - Singapore Edition
This event aims to debut and develop long-term Urban Sketchers courses by instructors in Singapore, following up from the ASEAN edition hosted here in 2017. We invite sketchers from around the world to join ten on-location classes, with facilitators from Singapore, to learn and reinforce the core value of urban sketching; sketch the world, one drawing at a time.
The USk10x10SG course spans ten classes across the spectrum of abilities, mediums and modes of expression in visual art.
We aim to help participants achieve these goals when classes conclude, and equip them to:
show stories of USk10x10 host city, one drawing at a time;
improve drawing skills; learn how to select, frame and design visual stories on a page;
learn how writing and drawing can work together to communicate more to  audiences;
experience the advantages of group learning and seeing the many paths to success.
You can sign up from now until 21 June 2019, and find out more about the lessons on offer and the instructors running them.
Keep up with us on the Facebook event discussion wall, and do indicate that you're going. For all enquiries related to this event, please write to [email protected].

KISS Keep It Simple Sketcha - Learning how to simplify in Urban Sketching with Jenny Sim
SESSION IS FULL
13 July 2019, Saturday 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM Hort Park meet at visitor centre
SGD $70/- 15 participants Beginner to Intermediate Level
This workshop aims to highlight the effectiveness of simplification for more success at Urban Sketching. At this intermediate level, you might have tried taking the approaches of construction and realism, for instance, often found to be self-defeating, given the myriad of variables that on location sketching can present to you, for example finding a choice spot to set up your gear; and racing against the sun, rain, wind, fire?
KISS promises to spark joy because it is fun and delightfully simple to do! We will learn to group small objects into bigger shapes; lose edges; modify and design the shapes of our subjects; and reduce redundant sketchy lines. We will also learn to apply ‘exaggerated’ tonal values for that added sparkle to your sketches.
Participants to bring:
graphite pencil
soft coloured-pencil
watercolour medium

Capturing the Mood in Gouache with Priya Subramaniam
13 July 2019, Saturday 1:00 to 4:00 PM Hort Park meet at visitor centre
SGD $70/- 15 participants Beginner to Intermediate Level
The workshop will shed light on the necessary materials, the types of surfaces that can be used when sketching with Gouache and the pros/cons of this medium. Also, the instructor will emphasis on how to capture the mood of a place with the help of some important techniques (principles common to any medium) like - getting a strong structure for the sketch, choosing a focal point, the importance of value over colour, how to get an overall colour harmony, creating depth in the scene and how to use edges to make a sketch interesting.

The Makan Sketcha — Food & Cafe Sketching with James Lim
SESSION IS FULL
13 July 2019, Saturday 4:00 to 7:00 PM Gillman Barracks at Handlebar
SGD $70/- 15 participants Beginner to Intermediate Level
In this lesson, participants will get to comfortably eat and drink, while sketching. Overall, the focus will be on drawing basics.
Together, we will deconstruct our food and the interior of the cafe into shapes, layers, and colours. This will help you look at things differently, from an artist's perspective. If you find urban sketching difficult, this session will help you understand the basics of it.
We will then digest the thoughts and reconstruct it visually on our sketch:
Using different line thickness for details
The 'blocking' process using shapes and layers
Adding shadow and highlights
The stronger the foundation - the sweeter the success!
Participants will need:
watercolour papers/sketchbook
drawing tools — pencil/color pencil, micron pens (especially 03, 08 or other similar pens)
watercolor set, with brush or water-brush
Uniball Signo broad pen, in white

Advisory on Location
The park is a nature reserve fronting waterways and the sea; always keep litter to yourself or in a bin, especially all non-biodegradable wet-wipes, food packaging, plastic wrappers, and other synthetics; keep garbage out of the watery home of our fellow earthlings!
Dispose water used for washing paintbrushes into sewage outlets; otherwise, dilute before dumping into water catchment areas so that the soil or drain microbes are not overwhelmed.
Let’s enjoy the greenery responsibly, handle delicate foliage with care, keep our feet off planted areas, and interact with fauna respectfully.

Preparing to Sketch
Make sure you have everything you need to start recording the scenery and views, be it the greenery of the park, or what you see looking out.
Paper sheets, sketchbook, drawings boards, etc; it’ll be windy so make sure you have lots of clips to keep things secure!
Pens, pencils, inks, paints, brushes, etc; bring a minimal selection so you have less to worry about.
Stool, hat, sunshades, water, insect repellent, sunscreen; make sure to have comfortable shoes on and dress lightly.
Snacks, as it’ll be three hours under the sun in our famously humid weather.
A bag for all your rubbish, to keep the park litter-free.
Sketch Draw
There’ll be a little lucky dip for sketchwalk attendees, so make sure to have your Workshopper and Sketchwalker tags with you at the end of the session.
We’ll pre-draw winners from the list of those who indicated they’ll be attending the sketchwalk, and they’ll pick a prize number out of a selection we will have available. See you on Sunday afternoon!

Demo 4: Guan Dao by Ignatius Yeo
Near Shelter 11 < click to view in Google Maps
2:30 PM – may do another at 3:00 or 3:45 pm
Tumblr media
The guan dao is an evolution on the dip pen or the folded pen, also known as a cola pen; the unconventional crude folded pen is largely used for creative calligraphy by European and Middle East artists even to this day.
The folded pen and guan dao may look alike, but that’s where the similarity ends. Through mode switching, Ignatius Yeo has pushed its limits beyond calligraphy and manuscript writing.
Tumblr media
In this demo, he will show you how the guan dao can be a pen, brush and even a palette knife with just a flip and change of grip. He will use it to capture a scene with Chinese ink and kopi-o gao, on-location. Those keen to give the guan dao a go are most welcome to do so.
