pregnancy and childbirth has got to be sooo celebrated in vougarde... changes your body, your relational identity, the shape of the rest of your life!

part of the reason post-partum mood disorders are so common in the modern western world is definitely because new parents aren't supported through the change — there's not much practical support by default, and the amount/type of medical support is often awful, but there's also not much understanding of what it means for your body, identity, social life, career, hobbies, self-care habits, relationships, etc.. so new parents are shocked by the extent of these changes and have no idea how to deal with them, how to reconcile their old self with their new self, how to adapt and forge a new path. it's so hard when the societal message is "soo when are you going to be back to normal already?" when there's no such thing!

vougarde would be much better about it. they probably have celebrations that focus on the parents, not just the baby. traditions meant to ease the transition into parenthood, and a more realistic cultural understanding of what that transition looks like. they're probably a lot more open about the physical changes and challenges of pregnancy/childbirth as well.

now, there would likely still be some pressure to over-change — akin to the modern western pressure (usually directed exclusively at new moms) to quit work, drop hobbies, and devote their entire life to their children. obviously vougarde's would be less sexist, and it helps that there's not simultaneous pressure in both directions, but some people would definitely be put off by the expectation that they should happily discard their entire previous lifestyle.

but, this wouldn't be a problem that's so exclusive to parenthood — it's not dissimilar to mirabelle's arc, or even isabeau's! i do think it would turn some people off of parenthood entirely, and some other people may judge them for that. and others may decide they still want to do it, but end up overwhelmed/frustrated/depressed at the extent of the changes and/or the pressure to change. but i do think they'd be less surprised by it!

and i think there's definitely space in the Change belief to say, "hey, i changed and became a parent to a newborn, and i'm already done with this shit being my whole life and i'm ready to change into someone who is [previous traits] and parent to a baby as well." and i think there would be plenty of support for that, both conceptually and practically.
