So is she. So are all of them, day after day. Miraculously. Taking orders isn’t a new thing. It’ll be nice to know where they come from, for once. Valentina jumps through hoops the way only a politician can, but this one has her in a chokehold. It’s hilarious. It’s impressive. It’s enough to make Ava stick around, see what becomes of all this.

It’s counter-nature-nurture-conditioning to varying degrees for all of them. Well. Except maybe Bob, who is nesting like his life depends on it. His doesn't. Theirs? Very much so.

Between Barnes and Walker, they really ought to figure out a way to turn brooding into a renewable energy source for the tower. It’s astounding, really. Another nudge of her boot against his leg, and she rises, flickers in and out towards the door.

Problem is, he’s not inept at all, is he? A mind to rival Sherlock’s, possibly surpass it, and that thought chills John to the bone.

He stands as still as can be, shoulders locked, spine iron-rod straight. Definitely not at bloody parade rest. There's a flicker in his eyes, flinty, stung, but he doesn’t move, doesn’t rise to it. It’s a near thing. 

Cruelty masquerading as curiosity. It’s so obvious now, how different they are, the professor and the detective. Sherlock is uncaring, unaware, a complete dickhead, but never cruel. John huffs once, quiet, dry. The barest flicker of a smile that doesn’t reach anywhere near warmth. If you’ve quite finished.

“ Right. Must drive you ‘round the bend, ” he muses, faux-pensive. “ Trying to figure out why he keeps me around. Think you might be missing a few puzzle pieces. As it were. ”

His gaze doesn’t waver. There’s no grandeur in it, no flash of ego. Just weight. A calm, blunt force presence. A downright refusal to be spun, possibly at the cost of his own survival.
