ALRIGHTY EVERYONE! After a small delay on my part, all the character bios are posted and out there for everyone to see! I hope you’ll all enjoy giving them a read and crafting your applications over the next few weeks!!

I’ve made the decision to set an acceptance date once we reach TEN APPLICATIONS! I want to make sure we have a good group to get everything started with, and enough people to make this roleplay really flourish in it’s beginning stages! YES, absolutely! Unless I’ve specified that a character has to be trans or nonbinary, you can feel free to change their gender! I’d love to see any of them swapped. I even have a few FC options for a male Juliet! If you need them, hit me up!

ABOUT:

NAME. Mercutio. AFFILIATION. The Prince, The House of Montague. AGE. Twenty-Seven Years Old. ** this character must be played as trans.

BIOGRAPHY:

He came into this world in a rush. Quick, too early, with boundless enthusiasm. Little lungs always knew how to scream the night away. To be born into his family was to be born into a life of splendor. No wish denied, no stone unturned, no longing left for long. Mercutio always knew how to dazzle, how to amuse and delight. From such a young age he understood how to take a room and make it his, how to become the bright centre of the universe to all who gazed upon him. He was Mercutio, and the world was his, and all he wanted was within reach.

Funny, then, that he spends a lot of his time wanting the few things he can’t have. So many loves are just out of reach, so many dreams turn into cynical warnings. A creature made for yearning, a cloying want behind all his bright lights and beaming smiles. It’s a hunger that will consume him, a want that will lead to destruction in the end. To be kissed until bruises form, to be laughed with until stomach aches. Lovers can be enemies, friends can be untouchable in certain light. It’s funny, but he’s learned to deal with it all, to live as a slave to his many passions. Blood hot for love, hot for violence. Ready to fight at a moments notice, ready to be steadied in the face of gentleness. It is his destiny to want all things. For so long the central conflict of their world seemed petty to him. Why should one man hate another so much that it should affect their families for generations? He had no real stake in it, as family to a Prince. It was not his life nor his honour on the line. Loyalty blossoms well inside his chest however, and he finds himself ready to fight and die –– not for the House of Montague as a whole, but for one who holds its name. Romeo inspires a great deal in him, and it may see him to his grave. 

CONNECTIONS:

ROMEO: BEST FRIEND, CRUSH. It blossomed slow, a sweet friendship. For years and years they have been as close as brothers, have played and laughed and drank and bathed in the light of one another. The love is an odd thing, a yearning that Mercutio never seeks to see satisfied. Some pleasures are found just in the wanting of them, after all.  TYBALT: LOVE INTEREST, ENEMY. Here is the dark twin of other yearnings, the pleasure that comes in the giving and the taking and the having. Pleasure that comes in a fight. It’s too much, it’s never enough. Sometimes Mercutio wants to crawl up inside Tybalt and live there, sometimes he wants to push him away and never see him again. It’s love, and it’s awful. BENVOLIO: BEST FRIEND. Steady Benvolio, such a steadfast friend. Mercutio wonders sometimes if there was anything he could do to make Benvolio turn away from him. He hopes he never finds out, hopes he never loses the rock from which he finds the great majority of his steadiness.  VALENTINE: BROTHER. This is a constant, a yearning for approval from the man who leads his life. Valentine is the most important member of their brood, in Mercutio’s mind. To make him proud would be to feel the warmth of God.

ABOUT:

NAME. Abraham. AFFILIATION. The House of Montague. AGE. Thirty Years Old.

BIOGRAPHY:

Abraham has always floated through life with an easy confidence. Ever since he was a child, he always felt like he knew best -- he was the one with the answers, he was the one crafting a plan and putting it into action. Abraham was a problem solver. If he saw that something was about to go wrong, he would leap in and try to make it right. Never one for idleness, always one to take action. Quick mind, quick heart, quick to walk down the street with a prideful set to his shoulders. Abraham always knew who he was, and what he had the potential to be. Such surety in himself would carry him far in life, he had no doubt of it. He comes to serve the Montague’s the way that so many do: by complete and utter happenstance. One day, he passes by and observes a serving boy being dismissed. He considers the options, his own need for money and more, for security in an uncertain world. Abraham puts himself forward at the house, and is swallowed up by them. One of the family, now, in as much as a servant could ever be. Montague and her brood are good enough people, in the grand scope of things. Abraham is a good person too, and often he finds himself yearning to take what they have for himself. They have such grand lives, such opulent surroundings. Abraham would feel like a King, if only he had a mere scrap of it. It would sit well on his strong shoulders, he would look lovely in finery. Abraham is a hungry man, but he hides it well, tucks away the darker thoughts and keeps his head down as best he can manage. A hard worker, that’s what they call him. A calm and dedicated boy, he has his head on right. The praise is something, but it itches at him in ways that so few people can really understand. He knows he’s better than their petty words of admiration. He’s worthy of more. Of friendship, of companionship, of a rise in station if he could manage it. He wears his loyalty to the house of Montague like thick armour, like a badge of valour, and hopes that one day it will serve him well enough to raise him up on high. 

CONNECTIONS:

ROMEO: JEALOUSY. It’s an odd thing, to serve a man and yet want so desperately to be like him. Romeo approaches life with ease, gets everything handed to him on a silver platter, often times which Abraham is holding.  GREGORY: WARINESS. CURIOSITY. The man has eyes like he sees too much, like he can look in to the soul of you. Abraham has gotten lost in those eyes before, there’s a fear he may drown in them, there’s a fear that Gregory sees him too clearly.  BALTHAZAR: BEST FRIEND. Servants of the House of Montague stick together through all things, through all hardships. Balthazar is a good man, a blood brother, a rock which Abraham can lean against when he needs it most.  MONTAGUE: MANIPULATION. The fine lady isn’t easy to bend to a will, but Abraham is charming and he has had a lot of time to work. He seems noble, he seems loyal, a trustworthy voice that offers opinions bashfully, when pressed to. Little does she know, he’ll soon be able to bend her to his will.

Who were Romeo’s real parents, why was he adopted?

Well…his real parents are Montague and Lady Montague, seeing as they raised him for his entire life. I didn’t put much thought into his birth parents. They weren’t there, he was a child who needed parents, and the Montague’s wanted to raise a child. That’s the story. That’s the story of literally thousands of people around the world! The Montague’s are a family who embrace people from all over, who build their family not out of blood, specifically, but out of love and the fact that they chose to care for each other and be a family. 

So –– I didn’t think about who brought Romeo in to the world. The important thing about him is that he’s a Montague, and he’s loved by the parents who raised him. If you want to headcanon something about that when you write an app, that’s up to you.

ABOUT:

NAME. Balthazar. AFFILIATION. The House of Montague. AGE. Twenty-Nine Years Old.

BIOGRAPHY:

He’s used to it, being at the beck and call of someone else. His father cut a domineering figure during his youth, loud and sharp like a knife. A brute of a man, a demon wearing the disguise of flesh. Balthazar grew up used to orders, used to following commands to the letter. He’s used to protecting people, too. The hardship made him strong, made him defensive of those who stand beside him. It made him quick with his words and quick with a sword, as talented as any master in the art of battle. When his father raises a hand, Balthazar is able to calm him to peace. When a rogue seeks to disparage his sisters good name, Balthazar is able to fight and defend her honour. The Lady Montague comes to him, then, when he is still heart-sick and ill at odds with life. She has seen him defend his sister in the streets, draw sword and win the fight with little harm done to any party. That’s his greatest skill, to win yet not to wound. To beat back his foe until they know that quitting is in their best interest. The Lady says she has a job for him, to be a servant at her house and defend the name of Montague. Some small instinct in him wants him to scoff, to spit at her feet. But the pay is good and her reasons are noble. She just wants someone strong at hand, should worst come to worst and a fight break out. The pay is extra, then, if he ensures the safety of her young heir. Romeo, he doesn’t seem like the kind to run foolhardy in to battle, it seems like an easy cause. Balthazar gives her his word that he will do his level best, gives her a bow, gains a smile and a position all in one fell swoop. At least now he will earn an honest wage and care for his family, pull them from the darkness and in to the light of day. In the end, it truly is easy work. He fetches. He carries. He guards their home with keen eyes and an honest heart. He checks on Romeo in the Sycamore Grove, occasionally accompanies him when he galivants with those friends of his. Balthazar doesn’t foresee trouble, as long as they stay far away from any Capulet. He’s almost bored with the mundane safety of life among those walls, he almost longs for a bloody battle or some other matter of great interest. Well, he knows better than most that you should be careful what you wish for.

CONNECTIONS:

LADY MONTAGUE: PATRON. Good Lady, high born and well renowned. She gives him work, gives him a role, and he’s grateful for it. He owes her so much, and he isn’t sure he can express the gratitude.  SAMPSON: OLD FRIEND, ENEMY. They grew up together, always seeming to be near, always seeming to be within reach. Childhood games, flights of fancy. The absence stings, their fighting worse because in reality, they’re fighting a war that isn’t theirs.  ROMEO: JOB. It’s an easy role to play. Watchful eye, keeping a look out for him. Protector, shadowing him around when needs-be. It gives his parents comfort for someone to look out for him, so Balthazar does the best job that he can.  ABRAHAM: FRIEND, COWORKER. They feel like the future, the two of them. Balthazar didn’t anticipate liking him so much, but he’s glad that he has an equal in the house who knows what life is like, who can spend the time with him and bring a smile to his face.

NAME. Montague. AFFILIATION. The House of Montague. AGE. Sixty Years Old.

BIOGRAPHY:

Life is meant to be lived to the fullest. To be a Montague is to be the best of the best: to have the finest house, the finest clothes, the finest friends. They walk among the stars, among the gods, creatures of myths and legends who can change the world on a whim. It is not their fault if others cannot see it, if their honour and grace is overlooked by those with weak and failing eyes. Her parents always taught her that no matter what others may think, she ought to keep her head held high and make an armour of her hard won pride. The Capulets seem like such sinister creatures, in her mind. They always want more. They are poisoned by their selfishness and entitlement, poisoned by their desperate wanting. This old grudge runs hot in her veins, boils in her heart. The vile villains of the house of Capulet can never be trusted, can never be swayed to see reason in any matter of importance. They are violent, vicious, and they court doom by flying far too close to the sun of glory. It is all that she can do to keep her eyes peeled, to rest a hand on her sword and hope she will not have to use it to put one of those crude Capulets in their place whilst standing on the public streets of precious Verona. There is a spark of ambition in her stomach when she hears about the Prince and his illness. He grows weaker by the day, or so his household staff say. They whisper of it at the market, make thinly veiled comments that even a fool could see past. He may not be long for this world, and she is the only statesman left in Verona with the skill and knowledge it would take to lead this city into a new golden age. Call her cocky, call her full of herself, but this Montague knows her strengths and exactly how to play to them.

CONNECTIONS:

LADY MONTAGUE: WIFE. It’s a love for the ages. They felt the spark of it the moment their eyes met, the moment their hands touch. She remembers their first dance, their first ball, their first kiss as if it were yesterday. Their marriage has been long, and yet she only falls deeper in love with every day that passes. ROMEO: SON. He is a precious little thing. From the moment she saw him she knew he was meant to be theirs. He was born to be a Montague, even if he is not related to them by blood. He has their name and their love, and all that they possess shall pass to him some day. She knows he will protect it well, that he will make them all proud. CAPULET: ENEMY. Vile man, he thinks himself so just and good, so honourable. Montague can see right through the facade, can see him for what he really is. A power hungry man, desperate for all the world to belong to him. He raises his family in hatred and courts doom with his hubris.

MERCUTIO: ALLY. When Romeo befriended that boy, she felt her heart leap with Pride. Mercutio may be overly dramatic, may be a troublesome brat when the day is bad, but he’s close with the Prince and well liked around Verona. Their friendship is a valuable commodity in an ever changing world.

NAME. Lady Montagye. AFFILIATION. The House of Montague. AGE. Fifty-Four Years Old.

BIOGRAPHY:

Peace and kindness aren’t second nature to her, softness isn’t something she was born with. In her youth she had been quite the rough and tumble girl, prone to bruised knees and scraped shins. Her laughter was too loud and her hair flew wild around her face as she ran through the streets of Verona. She may have been high born, but she rarely acted like it. Her friends were peasants, children who hovered around the market stalls waiting for their parents. She came with money and with treats stolen from the grand kitchen of her home, and won their friendship like a conquering force, none could stand against her charms. She smoothed her persona out as she grew older. It was necessary. Any foolhardy tomboy behaviour may have been tolerated in a child, but she needed to become the lovely Lady people expected her to be. It was a mask she wore well, in the end. Refined smiles and beautiful dresses, hands unmarked by dirt or scrapes or broken finger nails. She glimmered in the light like so much gold, blushed prettily at any who came calling to the house, seeking to court her and sweep her off her feet. So many came, and so many failed. Montague took her by surprise, in the end. When they met at a ball, she hadn’t been expecting to fall in love before the night was out. She had always been a romantic, but it made her standards far too high to fall for any mortal soul. She longed for grander and more beautiful stories, and yet every interaction with dear Montague felt like it was written in the stars. They loved each other fiercely, no force on earth could have kept them apart from one another. She worries sometimes that Romeo takes after her too much, that he has copied her and her notions of Romance. His longing sighs echo through the halls, and she wants to weep herself every time he shuts himself into the dark and away from the wider world. He is yearning for something, she can see it as clear as day. She only hopes that the object of his affections is something that he will be able to win, that his heart will not be broken beyond repair as a result of his longing.

CONNECTIONS:

ROMEO: SON. It’s a precious thing to find a family for yourself. Adopting Romeo and taking him in as their heir is the best thing she and her wife ever did. She couldn’t love him more, couldn’t cherish him with a greater intensity.  MONTAGUE: WIFE. It felt like destiny to meet. Perhaps it was. Some romances are written in the stars, some people are meant to be joined to each other for all eternity. Call her a romantic, but she couldn’t imagine loving anybody else as strongly.  BALTHAZAR: INVESTMENT. Her life is a worrisome thing. She spends so long thinking of Romeo, fretting over his safety and his happiness. It’s easy to find someone strong who can look out for him, who can defend the house of Montague with all the passion in their hearts.  LADY CAPULET: OLD FRIEND, ENEMY. As girls they were close. They were friends who cherished each other and held each other dear. They might have loved each other, once. Not anymore. Some hatreds are law, some run too deeply to overcome.

GREETINGS, CITIZENS OF VERONA! I just had to hop on and mention that I’m completely floored by the fact we have FOUR applications already! Floored, thrilled, bouncing up and down in my seat at work. They’re all lovely, so I can already tell this group is going to be a wonderful thing when it really gets off its feet.

I was initially going to wait until we had reached a certain specific number of apps before setting an acceptance date, but I might rethink that approach if people keep sending them in the way they have been. A solid acceptance date off the cuff might be what we end up with! I’ll update you all further once the bios have finished posting, hopefully at some point during the weekend!
