“Dalah’Surfal” “Lok’Dim”
shippy shippy Ven’Nay and Ophibell story under the cut. set at the end of Legion.
Happy Valentines day, my dudes!
The drums of war and victory echoed loud and strong across the fields- spreading word far and wide through the broken isles. The legion had fallen. Victory was theirs! All across the battlements warriors and warlocks and druids alike threw down their weapons and celebrated. Orcs let out proud war cries, pandaren lit fireworks and goblins did the same, Blood elves began creating intricate displays of magic and light that raced across the isles- more quickly spreading the word. Tauren hugged their high mountain relatives, and Trolls all proudly joined in with the war drums- many unable to resist the urge to dance along.
The night spread on, and soon the horde had returned to their own, all finding a place on the isles to meet and gather. They would leave sorting out the tensions between the Horde and Alliance to The King, Warchief, and Khadghar. Now was the time to finally take a sigh of relief. Azeroth was finally safe once more. One troll weaved his way through the happy War band, just as excited as the rest of them but his eyes scanning the crowd. He hadn’t seen Ophibell since the fall of Gul’Dan and Nighthold. He warmly smiled beneath his spiritshield mask at the memory.
“Now all that stands before us is this Abyss Illidan has mentioned,” she said that night. “Perhaps this war is finally almost over.”
“I hope so. It be too long since I’ve seen Orgimmar. Or da Isles.”
The pair had found a moment of peace, somehow in the midst of war, and had crept outside Dalaran walls to the nearby floating island. They had been lying there for hours- just reveling in the already clearer air and the sky where they could, at least for now, see the stars. Ven’Nay remembered holding his hand up to the heavens, doing what he could to find the constellations he used to find with ease home on Echo Isles.
“Ya tink Aloola be lookin at da stars, right now?”
“She could.”
“I been teachin’ her how ta find da North Star. I tell her ‘if ya can find north, ya can always find home. No mattah how far it be.”
“Oh? And how do you find the North Star?”
He remembered looking down at her with a playful look.
“Don’t ya know how ta find it yaself, mage?”
She hit his shoulder like she always did and he remembered laughing. It felt good after weeks of uncertainty. He hadn’t laughed since Broken Shore.
“You jerk”
“Ok, ok I’ll show ya. Come here.”
Ven’Nay, brought out of his memory and back into the celebration, laughed warmly under his breath. He thought of how she so trustingly came close beside him. How she willingly rested her head on his shoulder and listened. His hand came up to the Devilsaur talon on his neck. His e’ko surged with life as his fingers traced the edges of the carvings he himself had created. He wanted to share that with her.
His thoughts swam through the past few years. From his first steps in Orgrimmar, all the way to now, he knew for certain all he felt for the blood elf was true. He remembered how his heart first leaped through his chest when his eyes met hers. How he continued through his life to impress her and praise her and just… love her. He wanted to be her friend more than anything the entirety of Azeroth could offer. And when it was clear that was what they had become it took him days to get over it.
He thought at first, that perhaps he was just feeling the wide-eyed affection of a youngling fresh off the isles- that maybe this was nothing more but a crush- but the feeling never stopped. He didn’t believe in love at first sight. He still didn’t. But he knew with all his spirit that he never stopped loving her from the second he began. He loved her when they journeyed through Un’Goro. He loved her when he had to go to far away worlds and he loved her even more when he returned.
He loved the gentle look she gave him as he went on and on about the worlds he had visited- though she had already seen them herself. He loved the soft hands that would at times hold onto his, either to bring him back to reality or to hold him back. He loved her resigned sigh and subtle shake of her head when she knew she couldn’t talk him out of something- all done with a small but warm smile. He loved her. With every shred of his spirit he loved her.
It was why he was looking for her now. Not to tell her he loved her but… ok maybe… who knew what could happen next as he walked through this crowd. No. He was looking for her to just be with her again. He wanted that more than anything else this party could offer. The problem, though, was that it was very difficult to find one blood elf in the sea of The Horde. If he spotted one, they likely weren’t her. No he knew his Ophibell. She was somewhere around here. He just had to find her.
Ven’Nay slipped the spiritshield mask from his face in hopes it would help him better search and climbed up a light post to try to see above the ocean of people.
“Ven’Nay!”
He knew that voice.
“Ven’Nay!!!”
He turned from one side of the pole to the other to look towards the voice. It was her! She was already weaving through the people- waving her hands towards him to try to better get his attention. He jumped down from his perch and shot through the crowd after her. His smile only grew bigger the closer he got to her. He reached out to her and she to him, and upon finally meeting the two collided into a tight embrace not even a tauren could break in that moment.
Their words were a babble of relief and joy and excitement to see each other unharmed. Ven’nay eventually broke their embrace if only to hold her face in his hands and look at her. She reached up to his face and did the same, and the pair broke into even weaker smiles at the sight of each other. Ven’Nay laughed and held her head against his- holding their foreheads together. Without another thought he took a step closer and leaned forward to kiss her with all the fire and joy and passion that currently burned within him.
Realizing what he had done, Ven’Nay quickly backed up, still holding Ophibell’s head in his hands but separating his forehead from hers. His cheeks burned hot from embarrassment, and by backing up he could see the utter surprise that painted her entire face. That was a step too far and he knew it.
“O-ophie I… I be sorry I-,” he began to apologize- running a hand through his hair idly. He really hoped that would help. “I don’ know what came ovah me I just-“
Ophibell swallowed hard and looked up at him before closing her eyes. She let out the quiet resigned sigh she always did, with the same subtle head shake and smile to match. Before he could continue apologizing he felt her hands leave his face and grab onto his tusk. She began to laugh and giggle warmly.
“You big doofus,” she said through her laughter- brushing away his apologies and pulling his tusk to bring him back down to her level. “Don’t be!”
Without another word she got up on her tip toes and kissed him back. It was his turn to be surprised. Was he dreaming? Ven’Nay was pretty sure he was dreaming. He was completely frozen for a minute, unsure of what to do. At all. His hands hung weightlessly in the empty air as he tried to figure out what he should do with them. Finally after what felt like an eternity he came back to his senses, held onto her shoulders and separated the two of them again. His eyes were locked with hers.
“W-wait. Ya be serious, right? Dis ain’t some Blood elf custom I don’t know about?”
She leaned her head forward a bit to where their foreheads were touching again. Ophibell smiled and replied honestly, “Ven’Nay, I’m fairly certain a kiss on the lips has a universal meaning.”
Ven’Nay felt his heart leap.
“Really?”
“Yes”
“Y-ya love me?”
“Yes!”
His hands returned to her head, cradling it in his grasp and cherishing her face as if he’d blink and suddenly she’d be gone. Both of her hands held onto one of his while she smiled back at him. He had to ask again. It was the only thing racing through his head at that moment.
“Ya love me?!”
“Yes, dalah’surfal. I love you!”
Ven’Nay let out a weak laugh. She said it. She actually said it. He wasn’t dreaming.
“Ya love me”
Ophibell started to laugh again too, nodding and smiling bigger than before. Ven’Nay was caught in a whirlwind of emotions. She loved him. She loved him! Ven’Nay picked her up and spun in pure excitement.
“ya love me!!!”
“Yes! Yes I do! How many times do I have to say it, Ven’Nay?”
The troll brought her back down and kissed her face over and over, all the while pouring his heart out to her.
“and I love ya too! I love ya so much, Lok’Dim! I love ya I love ya I love ya!”
It was all he could say! It was all he could think! To have loved her for so long and to find out she felt the same way was nearly enough to make this entire war worth it! His hands weaved into her hair as he kissed her on the lips again- this time neither one surprised and both happily melting into smiles and laughter.
Nothing around them mattered at this moment in time. Nothing. It was just the two of them. Just like it was just the two of them that night of stargazing. Just like it was the two of them every time he returned from his travels. But now it was different. A good different. Now it was the two of them together. And it didn’t matter what would come next after this celebration. They were together. She loved him, and for Ven’Nay, that was more than enough.

{Trollin' Thursdays} Watch yo' language! Zandali Words & Phrases
This list is brought to you by The Sen’jin Literary Society, a group of RPers from the the troll RP board I was on that got together and, using the in game translator, came up with a list of Zandali words and phrases. Most of these words are not canon, but some are and can be found in game and RP books.
A side note about writing Zandali v. Orcish: It has been my experience in RP—and a commonly accepted headcanon among most troll RPers/writers—that when a troll’s speaks in “troll speak” they are speaking in a non-Zandali language with a Zandali accent. When a troll’s dialogue is written with proper grammar and lack of phonetic pronunciations, they are speaking in Zandali.
Example: A troll speaking Zandali: I would like to buy this mango. A troll speaking another language with an accent: I be wantin’ ta buy dis mango.
Most trolls that belong to the Horde or have had interactions with orcs will speak Orcish as a second language. Outside of these particular tribes, a troll’s secondary language will depend on what race they are most exposed to. For instance, Shatterspear trolls may speak Darnassian because of their proximity to night elf lands and the “peace agreement” they held with them for centuries. Farraki trolls may speak Goblin and/or Common because of interactions with goblins and humans from Gadgetzan. The degree of accent with which a troll speaks will vary depending on their mastery of the language. If a troll is fluent in Orcish and speaks without a Zandali accent, their words would be written just as proper as Zandali.
Also, troll speak can be interpreted as “low Zandali”, Zandali that is a less formal/proper dialect.
Speaking of which, there are various dialects and forms of Zandali that vary depending on the tribe/empire. Amani-Zandali does not sound the same as Gurubashi-Zandali or Drakkari-Zandali, and even within those dialects there are variations; but they are similar. So consider this list as a “base dialect” of Zandali from which the other dialects derived unless specified.
Have you made up your own Zandali words and would like to see them added to this list? Submit them here!

mon - a unisex casual term used to refer to a person instead of their name; ex. Mon, come ovah here!
fu - you/me/he/she/their; Because trolls live in a heavily tribe-centered culture, their language does not have a word that denotes a difference between the self and others. Fu refers literally to “a person” whether it be he/she/me/you and its exact meaning is largely contextual. Zandali trolls refer to themselves in the third person when they feel emphasis or clarification is necessary in conversation. dim - denotes a person who the speaker is close to, but not a family member, such as a very close friend or a lover; can be used as a suffix; ex. Nok’dim is ma friend. Honorifics and Statuses
Zul’ - a master of voodoo/witch doctor (prefix) ex. Zul’Faraji: Witch Doctor Faraji

'Watha - a large village or small city; Amani-Zandali (prefix); ex. Hiri’watha, Agol’watha, Shaol’watha, all forest troll villages
'Alor - a temple or place of worship; ex. Mazra’Alor: a forest troll temple in Eastern Plaguelands
Battle siame - blood
rohk - destroyer/destruction; can you be used as a suffix to denote a powerful warrior; ex. Jin’rohk: Jin the Destroyer thraze - blade

juju - a fetish, charm, or amulet
kaz’kah - death totem/headstone
mojo - physical stamina, often used when referring to fighting or sexual prowess ju’kai - A combination of the word ju denoting a master or mastery of something and kai, shadows. Literally this means “shadow mastery” and in context refers to marks or tattoos given to a rogue to denote his level of training or expertise. It is feasible to assume that other classes or casts within troll culture and tribal life could use the same conjunction: ju’yuutee - spirit master(y); ju’t’ief - fire master(y); etc. Love and Sex lok’dim - a term of endearment; ie: darling, dearest, beloved wassa’dim - a loved one Bal’a - “beloved”; pet name used in serious relationships wassa - love riva - lust
riva’dim - “person I lust for” or “lover” smadda - fervor; passion; also used as a crass slang term to refer to any number of messy fluids involved in or the result of sex; ex. “Clean yo’ smadda offa mah couch, mon!” hinky - backwards; inside out; also a slang term for “gay” or “homosexual” Insults and Bad Language e’chuta - shit yudo - fuck quashi - stuipid; idiot nehjo - dirty; a promiscuous person Phrases & Slang

Taz’dingo - a cheer of victory or triumph
Objects & Other Things tanponi - pillow(s)
iman - cold noh - elf
Grammatical terms fus’ - a prefix of emphasis. Can be added to any word to increase the strength of its meaning or to give it emphasis in a sentence. ex: fus’obeah - thanks a lot; fus’quashi - extremely stupid; fus’nehjo - filthy (physically or sexually). 'so - a suffix denoting possession. ie: Taki’so - beloning to Taki/ Taki’s; fu’so - his/hers/yours. In the proper context this could be used to refer to a person as the mate/partner of another. Taki’so would refer to Vo’jya, Taki’s long term lover. This is a rather familiar, tongue-in-cheek way to address or refer to someone, and could be used as much as a jibe as anything else.
Farraki trolls may speak Goblin and/or Common because of interactions with goblins and humans from Gadgetzan.

is this a call to war? your hands are shaking, fingers trembling and you can barely see them through the tears that flood your eyes. is this a call to war? you are shaken by the sound of the trumpet in the background, ringing loud across the field. is this a call to war? you are weakened from the fight from every day before this and every day to come.
but you will stand and fight when the trumpet sounds if only because you refuse to die.

[[amazing how I have a world of Warcraft blog and yet never post things here instead of on my personal]]

ok so last screenshot dump for the night, but I was just taking screenshots of Vol’jin for reference purposes when I noticed something:
Vol’Jin has the same animations as the male troll player/npc. I double checked with some screenshots I had of Ven’Nay.
Vol’Jin doesn’t make the faces the NPCs do though. He just looks into the distance like the bad a** he is
