[âWhen I used to teach creative writing, I would tell the students to make their characters want something right awayâeven if itâs only a glass of water. Characters paralyzed by the meaningless of modern life still have to drink water from time to time. One of my students wrote a story about a nun who got a piece of dental floss stuck between her lower left molars, and who couldnât get it out all day long. I thought that was wonderful. The story dealt with issues a lot more important than dental floss, but what kept readers going was anxiety about when the dental floss would finally be removed. Nobody could read that story without fishing around in his mouth with a finger. Now, thereâs an admirable practical joke for you. When you exclude plot, when you exclude anyoneâs wanting anything, you exclude the reader, which is a mean-spirited thing to do.â]

If you ever tagged me to do one of those tag game thingies and I never did it:
1) Thank you, seriously. Those are fun and being included shows that my followers care enough to want to learn more about me.
2) Very sorry about that, itâs extremely likely that I said to myself âCool! But Iâm busy at the moment, Iâll have to do this later today or tomorrowâ before proceeding to just straight-up forget, now itâs too far back in my notifications and/or your blog to find again.

Rewatching avatar again and man, Katara is such a strong character. Her kindness and care towards others is really admirable. And she has gone through so much too. I love watching the end of S2 and S3 because they delve a lot deeper into her emotional world.

You can learn another language when you're 50, you can switch your career at 40, you can pick up painting when you're 60. There is no reason to pick up more than you can handle at this moment. You are young, you are learning how to live, you are learning how to be an adult, you are learning how to deal with college, school, a fulltime job, anything. Getting through that single thing alone is an achievement, you don't need to do more to be doing good. You are doing enough by just making it through the year, by just doing the things you do. You don't need a special talent, a special skill, staying alive is a talent enough.

no dentist's office. no writing christmas cards. no taking flights. a world where every pain or minor annoyance is dismissed as your consciousness is replaced with a different version of you. a life without pain, or agitation, or monotony. and conversely, a life full of only that for every version of you who experiences the chores you wished to evade.
forget skipping work or school or birth. try everything. never experience anything that expires a negative emotion. the ideal consciousness sold as a product for the price of a version of you that you'll never meet.
but it doesn't matter. you carry the hurt down with you. in your hands, in your mind, your mouth. the grief mark experiences carried into his innie, gemma feeling the pain she experienced in the rooms even after she's been severed.
it doesn't matter. you carry it with you.

Someday your hands will be old and wrinkled, the skin spotted and bunching over your knuckles. And a child will watch you make something. It's a simple task, you'll have done it a thousand times before. But to that child, the smooth, confident way your hands move will seem like impossible magic. You have to keep living.

i actually find it really fascinating that there seems to be a subset of people who watch television shows and seemingly can't handle an ounce of conflict or narrative tension or flawed people handling difficult situations imperfectly. how do you guys live like this
