do you have any recommendations for fics where you think the author just fucking nailed max's character? OR thoughts on what makes a good max interpretation. I wanna write about him more myself but I main a different driver and don't want to fall into common max pitfalls y'know
i started looking through my bookmarks and now I have SO many tabs open you don't even know. for every one (1) trope or fic i get a little annoyed by, there are 300 more that are absolutely incredible and we are so lucky there are so many amazing creators on f1blr and ao3. i'll put some recommendations under the cut!
key things about max that people who don't main him might not know about:
max is kind!!!! he is generous and sweet to his friends
he will stop for children no matter what
he's genuinely a freak of nature when it comes to racing. you might think 'okay yes i do know max is good at cars' no. i'm holding your hand. this man is powered by g&t's and gasoline and he makes grown men with decades of experience in motorsport wet.
this one isn't even max-specific it's just about northern europeans - being direct is not the same as being rude.
that being said - at the end of the day you should write whatever feels good and fun for YOU :)
I've put some recent top faves for max characterisation under the cut (aka my secret author prop to turn you into a max main truther) - if anyone is interested I can make a bigger fic rec post? i was trying to keep this post from becoming incredibly long and have already failed. woops.
@thissying (sying on ao3) has the most gorgeous max characterisation ever, a recent fave is who am i?
@maxtism (leafycats on ao3) ohhhhhh my god I LOVE maple's fics. recent fave is kiss me with your eyes closed
@33max (33max on ao3) every single fic is absolutely gorgeous but my number #1 max characterisation is cat dad, a dad of cats - i love it so muchhhhhh it just absolutely IS max to me
this fic (never strangers at all by @verstappentime (borninsideatornado on ao3)) has me on my knees. excellent max characterisation
oh and this one !!!!! (baby, i'm the one to beat by bagoldfish on ao3) those update notifications had me clocking in like it was my JOB, max is written so beautifully here <3
again this is NOT an exhaustive list - there are so many lovely authors not listed here because I am literally at my job right now and i should probably get back to that. woops

In writing, epithets ("the taller man"/"the blonde"/etc) are inherently dehumanizing, in that they remove a character's name and identity, and instead focus on this other quality.
Which can be an extremely effective device within narration!
They can work very well for characters whose names the narrator doesn't know yet (especially to differentiate between two or more). How specific the epithet is can signal to the reader how important the character is going to be later on, and whether they should dedicate bandwidth to remembering them for later ("the bearded man" is much less likely to show up again than "the man with the angel tattoo")
They can indicate when characters stop being as an individual and instead embody their Role, like a detective choosing to think of their lover simply as The Thief when arresting them, or a royal character being referred to as The Queen when she's acting on behalf of the state
They can reveal the narrator's biases by repeatedly drawing attention to a particular quality that singles them out in the narrator's mind
But these only work if the epithet used is how the narrator primarily identifies that character. Which is why it's so jarring to see a lot of common epithets in intimate moments-- because it conveys that the main character is primarily thinking of their lover/best friend/etc in terms of their height or age or hair color.

im catching up on the races this weekend and i keep getting the overwhelming, sinking feeling that we are not watching the best drivers race for the championship. the best drivers on the grid actually took the same racing line at the same time to overtake the championship leaders like it was nothing. the best drivers on the grid were starting from the pit lane for a brilliant recovery drive. unfortunately, the best cars finished p1 and p2.
