Personally I think that battle sims like showdown would still be a thing in the pokemon world. Cuz like picture this: you are ten years old and the only Pokémon you have access to is the elderly family Sunflora. You love Sunny to death but also literally every media you consume involves Pokémon battles and champions and cool ass fights. Sunny is too old to fight and your neighbor’s Gothita is too young. One day on the playground your friend tells you about this cool website that lets you battle pokemon on the computer. Later that night you boot up the family computer and instantly realize that this website lets you play as GROUDON (!!!!). There’s no going back from there.

one of the most impressive things about toby fox’s writing to me is his ability to craft scenes where multiple plot threads are being forwarded at once in a way which feels so incredibly natural, which is something he uses for both comedy and drama, both very effectively. in particular, there is one scene near the beginning of chapter 4 where some incredibly wild stuff is happening involving the main plot at the same time as two of the other main characters are furthering their relationship, and that juxtaposition manages to work so well; both of them combine to create a palpable sense of tension— you see the warm beating heart of the game’s theme of friendship, contrasted against a looming, frightening, and mysterious threat. deltarune often feels like a rube-goldberg machine where seemingly disparate plot elements frequently wind up colliding, and the result is incredibly compelling. i think i had underestimated toby’s abilities due to how i mostly associated him with very funny and quirky humor, and the (relative) simplicity of undertale’s characters, but he is clearly a highly skilled dramatic writer as well. there is so much more to deltarune than “goofy guy says a silly” (though the writing is still quite good when it’s leaning into that mode, and i don’t think it detracts from the dramatic moments at all.)

I think it’s important to remember that with the whole Trump-Elon fallout, it’s entirely possible to watch it unfold and partake in the comedy of it all, and doing so DOESN’T MEAN you’ve somehow forgotten about every other serious, pressing, important, bad situation happening right now.

Unfortunately I think in the effort to want to stop the disasters that are happening and out of a lot of genuine caring about the suffering of the whole world, progressives have a habit of stumbling into a mental self-martyrdom fallacy. Because there IS so much to care about and it IS all so important and serious, it can become easy to feel pressure to only ever focus on that (for a variety of reasons).

However, always focusing on everything that is serious and going wrong and needs to be addressed is BAD for maintaining the self-care balance that allows someone to have the energy to take action when needed. Genuinely if there are no moments of levity where we can take a break even for a few moments to laugh and experience any positive emotions, the darkness will be all encompassing. You NEED to find things to be able to take not so seriously and laugh at or you might fall prey to becoming burnt out, bitter, and cynical.

People don’t forget everything that’s wrong when they choose to be silly sometimes. More often than not, that’s WHY they’re doing so. It’s possible to be aware and still make time for fun, as long as you don’t push too far into either end of that spectrum.
