Anubis: Facts and Significance of Egypt’s Dog of Death
Anubis, the ancient Egyptian god of mummification and the afterlife, played a vital role in the spiritual beliefs of Egypt. Often depicted as a black jackal or a man with a jackal's head, Anubis symbolized both death and protection, especially for those who were abandoned, powerless, or vulnerable in life or death.
Anubis is among the oldest known gods in the Egyptian pantheon. He is believed to have evolved from the earlier jackal deity Wepwawet, a war and funerary god with similar canine traits. Because both gods were linked with jackals and cemeteries, they were often confused or merged over time.
His image appears on the walls of tombs from Egypt’s First Dynasty (c. 3150–2890 BCE), but his worship likely began even earlier. During the Predynastic Period (c. 6000–3150 BCE), Egyptians noticed wild dogs and jackals digging up graves. In response, they deified a canine figure—believing that only a divine dog could guard the dead against real ones. Anubis became this divine protector, watching over cemeteries and ensuring the safety of the deceased.
Anubis’s primary roles included presiding over embalming rituals, guiding souls to the afterlife, and performing the “Weighing of the Heart” ceremony. In this judgment ritual, he weighed the heart of the deceased against the feather of Ma’at (truth) to determine if the soul was worthy of entering the afterlife. A balanced heart meant eternal peace; an unbalanced one was devoured by the fearsome goddess Ammit.
Though later overshadowed by Osiris, Anubis retained immense respect and importance. He was especially worshiped by embalmers, priests, and those who cared for the dead.
In essence, Anubis wasn’t just a god of death—he was a guardian, guide, and judge who ensured that every soul, no matter how forgotten, was given dignity and a fair path to the afterlife.
