I’ve been thinking about Sam Vimes’ boots. I mean … he likes the soles cardboard-thin, so he can feel the cobblestones; he can tell where he is in the city blindfolded that way. But Sybil loves her husband and cares about the state of his feet on cold, wet nights, so she buys him nice leather boots. This is canon. To allow her husband to indulge his toes would be a tad eccentric, but if Lady Sybil were concerned about being seen as eccentric, she wouldn’t have … well, done anything she’s done, ever.
So one day she presents her husband with a new pair of leather boots. Sam thanks her warmly, knowing it’s only a gift given out of love, while mentally running through the boot sizes of other members of the Watch to figure out who he hasn’t traded with yet in his size.
Then he tries them on.
The soles are made from glove leather. Not the thick fireproofed gloves Sybil uses when handling the nippier dragons, either – the kind of leather that’s used for fancy dress gloves and assassins who do the delicate work of dipping darts into poison.
He can feel every cobble under his toasty-warm toes.
It feels like love.

I'm watching the OSP detailed diatribe about Superman 2025 and it highlighted a shift in my brain.
Do y'all remember all the memes about Henry Cavill being lab made to be Superman (visually)? Yeah so that maybe kinda works for the man in general. Like at red carpet events or in casual wear NOT while acting.
However, putting footage of Henry Cavill in the role of Superman next to David Corenswet as either Clark OR Superman makes Cavill look like some weird fake bargain bin Superman.

many times in the new movie, clark says something to the effect of "i want to be a good person, i want to do good" and it's just. god. such a deeply common desire, one that could sound childish or naive if he didn't seem so desperately adamant about it. it's what i've always appreciated about the superman comics (and other superheroes, to be fair), the idea that most people, maybe all people, wake up every day and, despite everything that's out of their control, they try their best to do what they think is right.
clark is honestly flying blind a lot of the time. he fights with lois, he's always in trouble at work, he's a superhuman hero with problems that keep getting harder to fight. and yet he finds time to surprise lois for a 3 month anniversary, he makes friends with his falafel cart guy, he takes the time to save squirrels and, after battles, he always turns to the citizens, the children, before the cameras.
james gunn's (and david corenswet's!) superman could easily feel overly idealistic, but it's clear that his "goodness" is not a thing he is flippant about or takes lightly. he's a superhero reporter, he spends half of his days fighting evil and the other half writing about it, he's not unaware. he is hopeful and kind in the face of really scary shit because he knows that that is what being good is. he's an alien with super strength and laser eyes and yet he feels so relatable and deeply inspirational. bc at the end of the day, what is superman?
as always, he's a friend. :)

i'm sorry but the kids today won't understand the little furrowed-brow moments that were the camera zooming in to Asami as Korra was dying from poison
the jump as it cut to Asami's lips holding a pin to put in Korra's hair
the head-shake and throat-catch as Asami's hand closed around Korra's with a pledge of being there for her
that was how we left it for months
and then we came back and Korra was writing letters to Asami
Asami complimented Korra's hair
Korra said "you're so sweet"
you don't
you
you cannot understand
I'm just...I'm serious about that
if you weren't there you don't know what that's like and you can never know what that's like because we KNEW but also we were witnessing an unknowable phenomenon because it was unprecedented you just
you don't know
none of you who weren't there at the time
you who weren't witnessing
it was...............unlike anything it was just
that
THAT was Korrasami
and this isn't even getting into their subtle interactions before, the generic interactions, the Basic Stuff, that was just "oh hahahaha wouldn't it be funny" "OH LOOK THEY'RE STANDING NEXT TO EACH OTHER THAT MEANS THEY'RE GOING TO MARRY EACH OTHR" you don't understand that this was ALL EVERYONE EVER HAD this was all that people were used to you don't know you don't Get It it was That it is was Just That it was Just Sparring it was Just a Rescue it was..I'm sorry I'm actually crying right now, this is actually emotional, because it was a thing.
so no I will get upset when people say it Wasn't Enough or it deserved better because no you don't understand everything deserved better but this was how so many others got what they deserved
IT WAS WHAT IT WAS
IT WAS SO MUCH
DO YOU KNOW HOW MUCH HAD TO HAPPEN TO GET TO THAT HANDHOLD
DO YOU KNOW WHAT IT COST
AND DO YOU KNOW WHAT IT WON
THAT WAS A TRIUMPH AND IT WAS EVERYTHING

Hardest part of writing is accepting that some people will not fucking get it & you just have to like cope with that because over-explaining it just makes it worse

In my experience as a third culture kid who travels a lot the best indicator that you as a non-x is appreciating x culture is if the locals actively invite you to participate in it with them
Yes, you are allowed to buy those handmade Inuit winter clothes if an Inuk is literally selling them to you. They would not be offering you a price point if they didnt want you to buy and wear them. And you might discover that theyre the best winter clothes youve ever worn because of COURSE they would be if theyve kept this culture warm in harsh winters for thousands of years.
Yes, you are allowed to join those Cambodians in that local holiday theyre celebrating during your visit if they literally invited you to it. They would not have invited you if they didnt want you to participate. And in the process you might learn a lot about a culture you never wouldve interacted with and you can all have a laugh together about your clumsy but genuine attempts at getting your footwork right in one of their traditional dances.
Yes, you are also allowed to ask if you can participate in something from the local culture you are visiting. Sometimes you will get "sorry, thats a closed practice" but in my experience most of the time you'll get "of course, let me show you how to do this!" And in my experience people tend to appreciate when others make an active effort in sharing their culture and wont stone you to death if youre clumsy about it while youre learning. I guarantee that the local children doing all of this for the first time too make the same mistakes you do and they can tell if youre being disrespectful or genuine.
So much "cultural appropriation" discourse really starts to sound like "you cant participate or visit any other cultures if youre from a Colonial Culture and have to stay in your little box and never relate to other people"
