V couldn't save him. And in the silence after, Night City felt smaller.

V’s fingers flew over the keyboard, desperate to stop the upload.

“Hold on, Brendan—”

The vending machine’s voice cut off mid-sentence. The room went quiet.

Brendan?

The soft, frantic clicking of keys filled the cramped room.

“Hold on, Brendan. I’m tryin’ to stop the upload.”

V’s eyes darted over the code, adrenaline spiking, heart pounding in his ears. Every command he threw at the terminal failed. The loading bar inched forward, merciless.

“V—V! Aren’t you going to answer me? Aren’t you going to say anything in my final mo—”

The voice cut out mid-word.

At first, he barely noticed—too focused on fighting the machine. But the sudden stillness made the silence deafening.

His gaze snapped from the screen to Brendan.

“Brendan?…” His voice wavered. “Brendan??”

The keyboard fell silent beneath his hands. Dread pooled in his gut. He shut the laptop with a sharp snap, the sound far too loud in the quiet.

Why was he getting worked up over a vending machine?

It wasn’t sentient. Didn’t have the processing power.

But… it was kind.

And in Night City, that counted for more than most people would ever understand.

He thought about the emails—Jerry’s smug request for an update, the pathetic justification. Brendan knew about his marriage problems—knew too much—and now Jerry had made sure that knowledge was gone.

V’s stomach twisted. He didn’t want to tell Theo.

He stepped closer, resting his palm on the cold metal casing.

“Sorry, Bren… the world’s worse off without you.”

His hand lingered, fingers curling slightly against the smooth panel. He meant to pull away, to walk out and keep his head down like always. But the loss hit him harder than he expected, pressing down like a weight on his chest.

His fist clenched before he even realized it—and then it slammed into the side of the machine. Once. Twice. A third time. The hollow clang of metal echoed in the empty room. He didn’t stop until the sting in his knuckles was sharper than the ache in his chest.

When he finally stepped back, Brendan stayed silent.

V turned, jaw set, and walked out past the clerk without a word. The neon outside felt colder, the city a little emptier than before.

She moved instantly, grabbing his arm and hauling him onto the platform. He was breathing—but barely. He weakly gestured toward the jack in his neck, and she ripped it free.

He coughed and sputtered, rolling onto his side. Without thinking, she placed a steady hand on his shoulder, rubbing gently.

Slowly, he turned onto his back, his eyes locking onto hers.

Then, he reached up, his trembling hand brushing against her face. He let out a shaky breath, his hand still resting on her cheek. His voice is hoarse and drained.

"I heard you… down there. Felt you pulling me back. Didn’t think I’d make it, but… you kept me here, Panam."

His fingers trail down her jaw, weak but deliberate.

"I don’t wanna leave you. Not now. Not ever.”
