Maya had been one of those women who didn’t really do relationships. She didn’t have time and she just didn’t really find anyone she liked enough to really give up that type of freedom she had when she was single. But as she ran a nose into the hospital for a patient they just helped, and her team thought she did well and she went out for a drink and that is where she met Carina DeLuca. Maya wasn’t sure that is what she wanted, but she knew she wanted to get to know her more. But she had a no relationship rule but the brunt, she had changed that. She wanted to be with her and that is when she knew she couldn’t do things the way she normally does.
But the trauma that Maya had from growing up and her father, she didn’t realize it put a strain on every part of her life. Especially her relationship with Carina. Not that Maya was proud of the things she had done, but she was just kind of really trying to understand why she was the way she was and why she did the things she did. Maya pushed Carina away because she felt like she was pushing too hard, but in reality Carina just wanted the best for her and not wanting her to do anything stupid most of the time.
But after Andrew passed away and Carina was upset, Maya knew she couldn’t continue the way she was and she had to change in a way that would make her want to be around her. Maya was really trying to be better and being there for her and allowed her to do what she had to do. Maya didn’t push her and she didn’t want to push for her to talk, being Maya was awful when it came to talking. But allowing Carina to scream at the top of her lungs so no one could hear her, that was what she liked most. She knew it helped her and she wanted to give Carina that as well.
With lock-down happening, they were stuck at home for a few unless going to work and they have been arguing more then ever. But, knowing that Carina’s visa was up, and she was being close to going back home, and that meant that Maya was panicking and that meant that Carina was too. Their relationship wasn’t perfect, but Maya knew what she wanted and that was Carina. Sure, she had issues and she had to fix everything, but she knew that she needed to do what she could. But knowing that Carina might leave, it caused a strain on their relationship. But then Maya had issues with her own self and being captain at the station, and people not thinking she deserved it, it hurt. That is why she was now alone, after she proposed to Carina and she said no, she was left alone and broken and knowing she needed to change.
Carina left her, and Maya had nothing else. So she pushed herself harder at work, and wanted to prove to herself and everyone, but then she pushed too hard and hurt her ankle. Carina wasn’t gone for too long before that happened and she was miserable. That is when she hit rock-bottom when she lost the captain position. She was hurting emotionally and that is when she finally sought out help with the station therapist. She needed to if she was going to be the person she knows she can be. The only thing missing was Carina to see just the work she has been doing. That is the only thing missing in her life now, and she has no one to blame but herself.
Maya had been busy trying to prove she was ready to get back to work. Once she was there, things have been awkward for the things she did before she got the help. They had small clinics going on at the station every now and then and today was one of those days and Maya was going to help out. She needed to do something good with other people and that was one thing. As she was there she bumped into someone and that meant she had to apologize. Looking up, she noticed the brunette from anywhere and it was Carina. Confused and her eyes said it all, she didn’t even know she was back.
As Maya was patient, she just couldn’t believe she was back. Reaching her hand out and she stopped Carina from walking away and she cleared her throat. “How long have you been back for?” She didn’t even know she was there, and now she had a ton of questions. “Can we talk please? A lot has happened and I just want to talk to you.” Being all she can say as she wanted nothing more then not to work and talk to the woman she hasn’t gotten off of her mind.

Upon arriving in Seattle, the last thing Carina expected was to find someone who cared about her. She fell for Arizona Robbins first, but things didn’t work out and so Carina moved on. She loved hard and whenever she did find someone she cared about, she made that love known in many ways. Carina then met @volatiletendencies in the bar after Maya had ran into the hospital holding a nose in a bag. It was the most unlikely way to meet someone, but Carina knew that she was the person she was meant to be with from the second she saw her.
To say things haven’t been easy was an understatement. Carina had been trying to get Maya to see the long lasting damage her father had inflicted on her but it was unsuccessful. It put a strain on their relationship and it didn’t seem to matter how hard Carina tried to help her. Maya pushed all help away and pushed all of her feelings under the rug as if they didn’t matter.
To make matters worse, Carina’s brother was then attacked and passed away. That hurt more than she would ever let on but Maya was surprisingly great through that. She helped her to vent and allowed her to scream at the top of her lungs. She made it through Andrea’s passing because of Maya. Once she had grieved over that, her thoughts kept turning back to Maya and her unresolved issues. She kept pushing everyone away and the more she did it, the worse everything at home got.
The couple argued a lot now and then lockdown rolled around and things got so much worse. The immigration offices closed, which meant that problems with Carina’s visa couldn’t be fixed yet. It meant that Carina’s time in Seattle was running out but she had fallen deeply in love with Maya. She wanted a family with her but she couldn’t do that is she was being deported. And even if deportation wasn’t an issue, Maya’s unresolved issues put the biggest strain on their partnership. They argued and this argument caused Carina to leave Seattle and go back to her hometown in Italy.
She began working at the hospital she trained in again, trying to get back on top of the pandemic and realised that her life was dull without Maya. She was at a stand still. She wasn’t getting any younger and her love for Maya wasn’t dying out but Carina couldn’t go back. Her visa was sorted the following year but Carina wasn’t done. She was running out of time to achieve the one thing she had always wanted – a baby. She was struggling being alone and knowing that Maya wouldn’t fix their issues and they couldn’t start a family, it was tough. Carina’s visa was sorted now and because Italy didn’t feel like home anymore, she made plans to move back to Seattle but a month before she left Italy, she went for an IVF treatment.
She didn’t think anything of it, boarded a plane and spent 2 weeks sorting out her new apartment. She had lived with Maya before so this time, she was trying to make this her own place. She had barely left her apartment since moving back, apart from to secure her job back at Grey Sloan as an OB/GYN and then to talk to Jack Gibson when he reached out to her, asking for her help with the clinic. By this point, she had been in Seattle for 2 weeks and hadn’t seen Maya. She had told Jack to keep it a secret and so far, he had. But today was Carina’s first day at the clinic. It was based in the fire station which meant bumping into Maya was inevitable.
Carina got herself out of bed early in the morning, trying to ignore the sickness that seemed to build up. She put it down to stress and nerves. A lot had happened over the last month and a half and she was tired but she pushed forward, got dressed and made her way to the station. She said hello to everyone but hurried herself away to set up for her first patient. As she turned around to grab something else, she walked right into Maya.
“Uhh, I… Sorry.” Carina said, her head immediately hanging down so that she wouldn’t have to look at her. She tried to brush it off as if she had bumped into just anyone, but this wasn’t just anyone. It was Maya… It was her person, her love, her partner… This was the woman she /wanted/ to marry and start a family with but yet Carina pretended like she was just anyone else. She tried to step aside to pass Maya but found herself unable to move too much. This was too much, too sooner… That sickness just rose to the surface again and Carina washed over pale, trying to keep herself upright. You can do this, Carina. You’ve got this
