“I don’t think you’re scary,” Teddy mumbles, frowning to himself as he stares at the papers scattered all over the top of his desk. He’s aware that it’s a funny thing to say to a literal ghost, but he means it sincerely. Rain really doesn’t scare him; at least, not anymore. It was different when they first met, but now?

Now, she’s pretty much the only person outside of his immediate family that he talks to on a daily basis.

“And you’re not complicated, either. Ghost seems pretty cut-and-dry to me,” he continues quietly. There’s a brief pause, and then sheepish brown eyes finally flicker up to meet the other’s gaze. “Um. No offense. It’s just…”

He hesitates for a moment, taking a deep breath as lips press together in a thin line. This is what always happens when he tries to talk; eventually, he reaches a point where he just sputters to a stop. It’s only ever a matter of time before he can feel the words start to shrivel up and die in his throat — before his tongue starts to tie itself in knots, and his brain refuses to finish any of his sentences. Soon enough, he won’t be able to talk at all. He’ll just be trapped in his own head.

His shoulders lift in a half-hearted shrug, and he forces himself to continue after a little pause. “My stuff is… different. Doesn’t make a lot of sense, and it’s… I dunno.” He scratches the back of his head awkwardly.

“It’s a lot.”

“More complicated than a ghost? Not to belittle your problems or anything, but uh…” Even in death, she’s still finding that exact joking tone that others have seemed to master. The way she speaks is just a little clunky, but oh well? Sometimes it feels a little easier to exist these days, knowing that there is truly nothing left for her to lose. Aside from, maybe the friendship that has bloomed between her and the quiet boy who can see her.

The spirit floats over to him, meeting place the same as always. His dorm room is quiet and empty, and though she can’t really knock, he always puts a little sign on the door letting her know she can come in. She’d called it something similar to a bat symbol, at one point. Funny, considering the vigilante justice that had gotten her killed.

Oh well. It was funnier when she didn’t include the depressing part.

“Come on. Y’say that like you’re gonna scare me off. I’m the scary one, between the two of us. Don’t forget it.”

EARTH.

No amount of blankets is going to change the fact that you’re still falling apart inside, that it feels like everything you’ve ever done wrong is crawling underneath your skin, that you feel like there’s something wrong with you but everyone says that it’s fine, you’re fine, it’s all going to end up okay but you can’t change anything, no, it’s not in your control, they say. They’re wrong. You deserve to get better. Don’t you? Aren’t you tired of the bags under your eyes, of the weight on your shoulders? You have a hard time figuring out which relationships are toxic because they’re so fundamentally ingrained into your personality - or so you think - and you don’t know quite how to take care of yourself. You want to touch the stars but you’re so stuck in your problems rather than your dreams it feels like drowning, not flying, and it’s hard to tell the difference between the two feelings of weightlessness.

ON SUNNY DAYS I GO OUT WALKING. I END UP ON A TREE-LINED STREET. I LOOK UP AT THE GAPS OF SUNLIGHT. I MISS YOU MORE THAN ANYTHING

“I... I don’t...” he starts, but almost immediately, he trails off. It’s been so long since he last spoke that he hardly even recognizes the sound of his own voice; it’s too soft and raspy, barely audible over the waves crashing in the sea. ( Has he always sounded like that? He doesn’t know; everything feels a little fuzzy at the edges, memories clouded by the throbbing pain in his head. He can’t even remember how he got here in the first place. )

Another moment passes, and Teddy forces himself to continue, ignoring how clunky and wrong the words feel on his tongue. He doesn’t have a choice; he’s in too much pain to try and get away. “I... don’t know,” he admits quietly. “Don’t — please don’t...” 

Don’t what? He’s not sure. He can’t remember, but he knows he should be scared right now. He thinks he’s spent a lot of his time being scared. 

“The water. I need... need to get back in the water.” 

       “are you….. hurt?” there’s space put between the two of them, as she’s not sure what to do here. she could help people who were hurt, sure, but she’s not sure what she can do for a dude with a fish tail. she blinks a couple of times, wanting to make sure she’s actually awake. and not back at ace. “uh. are you… supposed to have a tail?” / @watcrlogged​ liked.
