This arc was a masterclass in proving that there can be stakes and tension even when you know exactly what's going to happen

We know the Empire is going to massacre the Ghormans. It's blatantly clear from the start that the Empire is going to either incite or stage an "insurrection", from Dedra's advice to Krennic and Partagaz. You see the soldiers clearing out the plaza. You see them positioning snipers on the roof. You see stormtroopers barricading the exits. You see them sending in new, untrained recruits as riot control. You see them keeping the KX droids hidden until the right moment. You know as the sniper finds their first mark, they're not aiming for the Ghormans, they're aiming for the soldier, so they have an excuse to open fire

Even so, the scene is deeply shocking and harrowing - we know the Empire is capable of this, but we rarely see it onscreen and close-up, watching the civilians scream and fall as they try to flee

The same is true in the next episode. We know Mon is going to give her speech, denouncing the Empire's lies and the Emperor's corruption. We know she's going to lose everything. But we also know she's going to escape

Regardless, the chase through the Senate building, the attempts to arrest her and Cassian shooting his way out - they're as shocking and stressful for us to watch as they are for the characters to experience

Prequels can lose a lot of gravitas when you know someone has to survive or die, or that events have to end a certain way, but in this arc Tony Gilroy and his team mastered the art of creating suspense and gripping an audience, despite knowing what's going to happen in the end

was almost worried fascist fanboy was about to get a redemption arc but no he found out his fascist girlfriend lied to him which meant the last 2 years of his work meant nothing, choked her out bc he's an incel, thought he was about to get a personal victory against cassian only to find out that his archnemesis has absolutely no fucking clue who he is bc he's irrelevant, and then gets headshotted by the billionaire tailor who he's been conning this whole time. FANTASTIC 10/10 NO NOTES.

cassian’s “who are you?” to syril is not a thanos “i don’t even know who you are” moment. it is not “for me, it was tuesday” or “the axe forgets but the tree remembers”. because cassian didn’t ruin syril’s life. syril upended CASSIAN’S life, and ruined his own in the process. syril stumbled on on the case of two dead beat cops that the empire could not care less about and told him so to his face, but he was so desperate to prove himself as a useful cog in the empire’s machine that he went against his superiors to make a big show out of apprehending someone who was only trying to get back to his normal life. and it goes horribly. syril fucked up, and he’s fired, and he can’t make himself blame the empire so he becomes fixated on andor, his enemy, this big bad master criminal who escaped justice and ruined his life. it’s an obsession. and years later, in the midst of his disillusionment and regret watching the violence on ghorman he helped bring about, he sees him. cassian andor. and all this rage and resentment that’s been boiling under his skin for years overtakes any thought of the innocents dying and he throws himself into fighting cassian with a brutality that is obviously personal. and he almost wins, he has the gun pointed at him, when cassian looks at him with genuine confusion and asks “who are you?” and syril breaks. because he’s spent so long convincing himself that andor is out to get him, and now he sees that this was just as futile as everything else he dedicated himself to. because andor did nothing to him. and he has to die with that realization.

cassian had far more reason to hate syril than the other way around, but syril was completely unimportant to him because he chose the rebellion and love over resentment and the empire

while i have an unmatched level of faith in the andor team and trust them with any plot development no matter how "out there", i really do hope s2 doesn't have any sort of defect/rebel/“redemption” turn for syril. one of the great joys watching andor live was seeing ppl empathize with and babygirlify this guy instantly, then get hit with week after week of "He Is The Biggest Loser Fascist You'll Ever Meet" . am still riding that high . like they were editing him to folklore taylor swift . just bc he was somewhat meek and had blue eyes . i need him to become a bigger fascist in s2 if anything
