i was just talking to my brother about my art as i’ve been getting back to making collages lately. i like to make poetry from trashy magazine articles and cut up pictures to give all of it a new meaning.

i realised that’s what i was doing when making my weirdcore edits- taking a picture i thought had The Vibe and adding a fairly meaningless phrase to it that suited the feeling i was trying to convey. i think i do that with a lot of my work; subverting the meaning of existing material in a way that conveys an emotion im feeling. now i’ve had this reflection i might try to start making edits again (when i get a new laptop lol mines busted).

my brother then mentioned he’s seen one of my most popular edits appear reposted on tiktok out in the wild and we had a giggle looking through an account that reposted weirdcore edits where lot of which were mine!!

thinking about it, i don’t really mind if people repost my wc stuff (as long as they’re not claiming they made it) as for me the aesthetic is about abstract feelings conveyed in strange ways that people interpret differently. so i hope that someone choosing to repost my work means they connected with it in some way? idk. 90% of the base images i use aren’t even mine so who am i to cry thief. i just find it funny as a lot of these i put together in five minutes or used a base image from a completely mundane source like someone posting their house reno progress on imgur in 2011. or one of my fav examples, a smoked out ceiling vent from a lightning bolt travelling through it to strike some poor sod’s toilet. to me it reflects finding meaning in the mundane which is something i try to do often to get through life.

maybe that’s what weirdcore is at its heart, making meaning out of a mundane world.
