Pontefract Castle is a place of family-friendly adventure, with wide open spaces to play and fascinating ruins to investigate.
Since its construction almost a thousand years ago, Pontefract Castle has seen some truly incredible things. Known since the 13th century as the Key to the North, the castle has been at the centre of some of English history's most pivotal events. Loyal Royalist soldiers, medieval barons and selfish kings. Unfaithful royal lovers, liquorice farmers and selfless Victorian ladies.

The Spurn Lightship, Hull
My latest post to my YouTube channel
The Humber is regarded as one of the world’s most treacherous waterways, and even today river pilots are required to guide ships in and out. Built in 1927 by Goole Shipbuilding, Light Vessel No.12 Spurn (The Spurn Lightship) was based at the Spurn station outside the Humber. The ship was moved inside the river to the Middle station during WW2, with its crew being armed and given gunnery training alongside instruction in air-raid precautions and first aid.
The Spurn returned to its original position after the war and served there until replacement by a new vessel in 1959. At this point, the Spurn was renamed Bull, repainted red, and moved to the Bull station inside the river until being decommissioned in November 1975. The vessel was purchased by Hull City Council in 1983 and restored as the Spurn prior to being opened as a floating museum in Hull Marina.

The Tank Barge, Swinderby on the River Hull
My latest post to my YouTube channel
I had parked in the car park adjacent to the scale lane swing bridge in Hull and spotted the Tank Barge, Swinderby coming up the River Hull from the River Humber. I only had my old phone and filmed it. I saw this barge many times over the years and it was always good to see her.

Rosslare Beach, Co. Wexford in the Sunny South East of Ireland is one of the most popular beaches in the county with the strand being located next to Rosslare Village. This is a Blue Flag beach and a destination for swimming with a lifeguard on duty during the summer months.
The name ‘The Sunny South East’ stems from this area as it prides itself on being the sunniest place in Ireland, receiving about 300 hours more sunshine each year than the national average.

Cahir Castle, Co. Tipperary, Slideshow
My latest post to my YouTube channel
Cahir Castle is one of Ireland’s largest and best-preserved castles. It stands proudly on a rocky island on the River Suir.
The castle was was built in the thirteenth century and served as the stronghold of the powerful Butler family. So effective was its design that it was believed to be impregnable, but it finally fell to the earl of Essex in 1599 when heavy artillery was used against it for the first time. During the Irish Confederate Wars it was besieged twice more.
At the time of building, Cahir Castle was at the cutting edge of defensive castle design and much of the original structure remains.
An excellent audiovisual show now provides sightseers with a detailed appreciation of the castle’s long history. Visitors also flock to the castle because of its role as a film and TV location – it has featured in productions like Excalibur and The Tudors.

My 1982 Mk1 Ford Fiesta 1.1 L
I wanted to get a practical classic car and spotted this extremely clean Mk1 Fiesta, she came with full service history and brought back memories of my youth (yes I was young once! lol). I bought her £550 and drover her home, alas she didn’t make it and suffered a seized nearside brake calliper and was recovered. This was replaced with a new one and she was fine. I did enjoy her but with three cars two had to go and the Fiesta was sold to a friend. Within weeks she had been vandalised and written off, yobs just wrecked it for fun!

The Great Orme, Llandudno, North Wales, Slideshow
My latest post to my YouTube channel
The Great Orme is a limestone headland on the north coast of Wales, north-west of the town of Llandudno. Referred to as Cyngreawdr Fynydd by the 12th-century poet Gwalchmai ap Meilyr, its English name derives from the Old Norse word for sea serpent.
The geology, wildlife, archaeology and landscape of the Great Orme (Pen-y-Gogarth) on the Creuddyn Peninsula is of such importance that much of the headland has been designated a Special Area of Conservation, a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Heritage Coast. It is managed as a Country Park and Local Nature Reserve by Conwy Countryside Service, which employs a Country Park Warden and also organizes study programmes and environmental activity walks for schools throughout the Llandudno and Conwy areas. The Geology of the Great Orme area is the subject of an article in the Open University Geological Society Journal. Particular geological features include the Limestone Pavement.

Bunratty Folk Park, County Clare, Ireland Slideshow
Set on 26 acres of unspolit Clare countryside, Bunratty Folk Park features over 30 buildings in a ‘living’ village and rural setting.
Rural farmhouses, village shops and streets are recreated and furnished as they would have appeared at that time according to their social standing, from the poorest one roomed dwelling to Bunratty House a fine example of a Georgian residence built 1804 home of the Studdarts, the last family to occupy Bunratty Castle.

My 2006 Skoda Fabia Bohemia 1.4 Slideshow
I needed a car and eventually bought this Skoda on its looks and being so clean. I didn’t realise it needed a cam belt right away! The garage I bought it from were frankly awful and hostile. Eventually I took it Skoda for its cam belt etc and moved to Ireland in it. There it had lots of brakes work as well as other things that kept failing on it. I moved back to the UK with it and got it through another MOT. Then guess what it needed more repairs! That was it and it was dumped.
A great shame as it was a lovely car to drive, economically yet could shift when you wanted it. It was the prefect sized car, big enough carry all I wanted yet small enough easy to park etc. I wouldn’t call this a bad car it never let me down, but it was one of those that needed constant attention.

West Cork Model Railway Village Slideshow
The West Cork Model Railway Village depicts the West Cork in delightful miniature form serving the towns of Clonakilty, Kinsale, Bandon and Dunmanway. The Model Village is a fully scaled handmade model of the old West Cork Railway Line with working trains. The models and figurines are carefully handmade on site to a scale of 1:24.
West Cork Model Railway Village is a not for profit community enterprise? It’s governed by a board of voluntary directors. Any profit is re-directed to developing the Model Village.
The project was developed nearly 30 years ago with the main aim to provide a significant educational and visual interest to both the local and tourist alike and to bring a much-needed employment scheme to Clonakilty.
A dedicated talented group of workers set to work to make the Model Village what it is today. With the help from government agencies, FÁS and now Pobal, the Model Village has developed into a national attraction.

Lydney Harbour, Gloucestershire, Slideshow
My latest post to my YouTube channel
I had driven past past Lydney, Gloucestershire often on the A48 and seen the sign for Lydney Harbour but never taken a look. One day I stopped and took some pictures and I was not disappointed. I hope these few snaps inspire to stop by and visit the harbour to take a walk.
Lydney Harbour is a place steeped in history and heritage. Riverside walks, sculptures, great for birdwatching, sunsets and steeped in history, Lydney Harbour is well worth visiting as a place of beauty but also to see the power and force of the River Seven and its estuary which has the second highest tidal range in the world.
The Lydney Harbour stones are not actually ancient and were not built by druids, but were sculpted by local artist David Yeates and form a compass, with the directions carved into them.

Edinburgh, Capitol of Scotland, Slideshow
My latest post to my YouTube channel
I was on holiday in Scotland and it was a glorious sunny week we too. This to date is my only visit to Edinburgh and it was far too hot to really enjoy it, I hope one day to return on a cooler day. I hope these few photos inspire you to visit this historic superb capital city.
Edinburgh is Scotland's compact, hilly capital. It has a medieval Old Town and elegant Georgian New Town with gardens and neoclassical buildings. Looming over the city is Edinburgh Castle, home to Scotland’s crown jewels and the Stone of Destiny, used in the coronation of Scottish rulers. Arthur’s Seat is an imposing peak in Holyrood Park with sweeping views, and Calton Hill is topped with monuments and memorials.
