Hello everyone! a very nice anon asked me if I had a tutorial on how to make a colorization. A few friends also wanted me to explain it to them, so I thought it was a good idea to finally make one. 

***I’m pretty sure there are tons of people that follow completely different steps to color b&w pictures and that’s totally fine. I’m about to show you my way. I hope you all find it useful! :)

okay so this is just a quick tutorial thrown together to help out some peeps. i’m by no means an amazing photoshopper, but i’ve got the basics down. or at least i like to think so. anyways. 

i actually lied in the header, this is not a few steps. i meant it to just be a short tutorial, but it’s actually pretty in depth with a lot of pictures and descriptions. if you want to know how to just resize something, then skip allllll the way to the bottom.

How to cut-out the background of a picture

A tutorial by wephotoshop

Here I will explain how to erase the background of two types of pictures, one with a solid color background and well one that hasn't :)

This are the images I'll work with:

So I'll start with the first picture.

When the photo has a solid background, I use Color Range. This works like the magic eraser tool, but it's more precise.

1) Unlock the background layer. Then, using the lasso tool 

 select the outline of the person (it doesn't have to be precise at all) 

It's better if it's a little bit in the inside rather than a bit on the outside.

2) Now select again the polygonal lasso and right click > select inverse

3) Use the Eyedropper tool to select the background color.

4) Now go to Select > Color Range

5) Move the Fuziness left or right until most of the person is black and most of the background is white.

 6) Press ok, then CTRL + X  and that's it! For the holes between her arms and body just repeat the steps except for the select inverse part.

(I added a solid color layer so you could see that it's .png)

Now let's see how to cut-out a photo with a more complex background:

1) Unlock the background layer. Use the pen tool 

 and start clicking around the person. If you make a mistake, press CTRL while you move the little square. You can press ALT to do curves.

2) Once you conect the last square with the last one, there should be a line that looks like this: 

3) Right click > make selection. Then right click > refine edge. This are my settings: 

4) Now right click> select invers and press CTRL + X

Done!
