Something I really respect with Call the Midwife is that there are multiple loser characters who are treated the same by the plot as the more popular fashionable girls. They get their romances and friendships and screen time. And it’s not that the plot is pretending that no one thinks they’re weird, there are people talking behind their backs and they’re very aware that they aren’t popular fashionable girls like the ones in magazines. It’s just that.

Chummy is very aware that people think she’s big and clumsy and she’s socially awkward, and she meets someone who always assures her that she’s amazing and can do whatever she sets her mind to and friends who support her and make sure she knows she’s doing amazing

Jane is too scared to ever speak and socializing with the other girls until she meets the reverend who waits for her and tells her she’s brave then she slowly starts opening up. She hasn’t had a series long arc or anything at the point I’m at but she’s treated with respect.

Cynthia hasn’t even had a major series long arc at the point I’m at but it’s very clear she’s very important.

Shelagh too. She’s been a nun half her life and when she leaves the clergy she goes for dated simple clothes and doesn’t seem to have much desire for partying or being fashionable. She gets her sound of music romance and a series long character arc about finding herself and figuring out how she fits into her community after she’s left it.

They’re not trendy or fashionable, and they don’t really want to be. They’re themselves, they’re unique, they’re successful and extremely important to their community. And the show treats them like that.
