okay going to elaborate LAWL under the cut because im courteous about my negativity
i think my biggest problem with this season is that is so completely sanitized of everything that made the older seasons work. i'd sort of seen this coming, but in an effort to make the brothers look like nicer, more decent people, they've ended up just making them very, very... well, boring. and thats not to say that the idea of them becoming better people isn't a good one, but the execution of just flipping a switch and now they're Decent is not the way to go. instead, the result is that the characters [not even just the brothers, but side cast (most notably totoko, who is no longer violent or demanding of the brothers' attention in any capacity), too] hardly feel like themselves; when watching the most recent episode with friends, we literally cheered because todomatsu behaved like himself for all of 5 seconds. people shouldnt get excited because one of your main characters is acting like himself. instead, it feels like theyre behaving like their merchandise, if that makes sense. it's very strange!
and in terms of sanitizing, the comedy has also suffered greatly. jokes aren't being pushed as far as they can [if theyre pushed at all], and theyre much fewer and farther between. im honestly shocked that we're on episode 6 and there hasnt been a single dick or sex joke when those are usually the show's bread and butter. thats not to say the jokes were always Good but the fact that theyre completely gone is just crazy to me considering they were, for better or worse, a staple of the show's comedy. and i wouldnt even necessarily mind a slice-of-life kind of direction for osomatsu-san, especially since we're quite far along now, but even as far as slice-of-life is concerned this is just very poor execution of it. The more seasoned larrynators [i will never call you that again im sorry] may know this already, but my favorite manga of all time is a slice-of-life, Skip and Loafer. as with many others in the genre, it does a really good job of balancing everyday life and character development [especially more serious, emotionally-driven story beats; tuck That into your pocket because im gonna complain about that too] with comedy, even though its much more grounded than osomatsu-san usually is. but i guess what i mean is like... in spite of its reputation slice-of-life is not and does not have to be Boring. but that's really the only word i can use to describe this new season, because in each episode, time passes and nothing happens. it's not entertaining!
and to the point of emotional story beats. i dont mind the return of (dubiously) morally-righteous choromatsu, in fact i greatly prefer it to the recent "actually the correct term is ephebephile"-esque route they've been taking with his character since the movie. however, the execution of it feels very hollow. in every episode [except ep. 4] so far, there's been some focus or other on him randomly saying "is this really the right thing to do?" to a situation for some emotional intrigue, but i find the lead up to it is so boring that i genuinely have no idea where his emotional hang-ups are coming from half the time. with the fan episode, it at least made some sense, but even then there was nothing satisfying about it. the brothers solemnly agreeing to take the fans back to their respective timelines didn't feel like the sort of thing they would even want to do, but for some nebulous reason... they were swayed by choromatsu's righteousness, when in any other season they'd have laughed in his face? i dont know. maybe i'd feel less strongly about this if it were less of a pattern, but of all the episodes we've seen so far there's been a scene like this in literally all of them except for one, and not a single one of them has in any way felt earned or emotionally satisfying. at the very least, they haven't felt entertaining.
i dont know. i want to keep my hopes up that maybe next episode will be funny, or my interest can be kept, but it's really just been bummer after bummer for me. it feels like they're trying to coast on dangling keys in our faces instead of acting doing anything entertaining or interesting with these characters.
not very impressed with the new season divas i won't lie 🥲

2am cant sleep heres some kiru thoughts under the cut
s4 timeline is roughly when i think koyuri would be born, and it made me start thinking about kiru + matsuyo's relationship a bit. ive joked before about kiru calling her mom but i think she stops after koyuri is born; however, this is because her and matsuyo have gotten closer.
a lot of new mothers struggle with the loss of identity/individuality that follows giving birth, when everyone immediately starts to only see you as a mom and nothing else, and everything about you (life, job, achievements) get filtered through that lens. suddenly your interests don't matter and the gifts people get you are really for the baby or the family more than you. they don't say your name anymore, even strangers call you "mom" or "mama". and that's not to say motherhood isnt a wonderful thing! but mothers themselves are seldom treated like the same people they've always been after becoming moms.
matsuyo, i think, is intimately aware of this because it's an experience she's lived for so long. even now when her kids SHOULD have left the nest by now, she still has to play mother. she's not allowed to have her hobbies again. she doesn't have the time. and i think because she's so aware of this, when koyuri is born —of course she's excited about the baby, and im sure she makes plenty of jokes about her being the first grandbaby— i think matsuyo spends a lot of time with kiru specifically to help her stay grounded and not have that happen as much. and in turn i think kiru would indulge matsuyo in the hobbies and interests she hasn't really had the chance to spend time engaging with for a while. so they become quite close as a result of this

i always find it really cute when people make those comics or aus where one of the brothers becomes a father but im always so tickled whenever they choose the name "matsuko" or "matsumi" if they have a daughter because like. imagine being one of the other brothers and you wanted to name your future daughter that but your own brother beat you to it. id be so mad
#larry time#i mean i PERSONALLY wouldn't be mad because i both can't and won't have kids but like#on principle#especially if it's one of the younger brothers because i just know osomatsu would want to name his kid that 😭

okay hai. it's time. these are mostly me complaining tbh LMFAO but rest assured i did not Hate it
to be honest the new episode didn't even... really feel like an episode? obviously the point of it being underwhelming and not having much substance —especially for a show whose previous season openers were known for having almost Too Much going on— has already been made, but i honestly felt like this episode was more akin to a compilation of those shorts they started putting out a little before s4 started airing. it felt like i was watching a longer version of moon viewing that Really Didn't Need to be that long. maybe it was the lack of dialogue (for a season opener there was almost no talking going on until the end, which felt weird) but it just. didn't even really feel like an Episode to me. it honestly felt like i was watching a pixiv fancomic that got animated. i dunno. after a four year wait i feel like your first episode back being that boring, even to a lot of fans, is just really disheartening especially when in earlier seasons the show really prided itself on being a gag anime
and it's not even necessarily that im mad at them going for slice of life so much as i am that it's not being Balanced well with good comedy. i would probably eat up an episode like this if the season were well padded with good comedic episodes, because osomatsu-san is Meant To Be A Comedy, and if it were a mid-season episode. but with an opener like this... i have no reason to expect that ill see those kinds of episodes.
and even for slice of life it feels kind of underbaked? there's so much potential behind a tanabata episode and i feel like a lot of it was squandered; compare it with season 2, where during the new years episode, we got more of an insight into the kind of cards the brothers were drawing to send out (and how wildly inappropriate many of them were). there was a good amount of playful banter between all of them based on what each brother was doing! and for a show about 6 prospectless men who are totally stagnant in their own progress, i feel like an episode with a focus on a holiday where you Literally Write Down Your Wishes would've been a good opportunity to show that their priorities might even be at this point in the series. but we didn't even get that. it just feels like a missed opportunity to me given that "talk about your wishes on tanabata" is such low hanging fruit you have to bend down to reach it
i dunno. im holding out hope that the watermelon alien episode will be fun, but im more cautious than i am optimistic. it's high time they start referring back to -kun again so maybe this will give the series a bit more intrigue, at least for me personally
anyways i will give my Real thoughts about the episode tomorrow probably. or just whenever i see that most of my oomfies have seen it
