sometimes I go on a Wikipedia rabbit hole

I hear about a historical figure, a royal, a warrior, an artist or someone completely else and then I can spend hours reading up about them and then following the line of their female descendants as far as it can get me

the goal is to find out someone who has descendants in this day and age and it makes me exceptionally happy when that happens

usually I also save cool art of said daughters, granddaughters etc.

Apparently in China peach wood (Along with the rest of the plant) is believed to have properties that repel evil spirits, a little similar to silver in European legends or iron for both European fae and West Asian/Middle eastern Jinn. Taoists sometimes keep swords made of peach wood because of this. This made me realize something. If you took a peach wood stick, and attached studs to it of both silver and iron you'd end up with a club or staff (or mace, flail etc.) that would have the weaknesses of many kinds of supernatural creatures while still retaining effectiveness as a normal weapon (peach is a hardwood and silver's poor edge retention doesn't matter for studs). You could even keep adding new stud materials to get something ridiculous that affects over 120 catalogued folkloric monsters. Since you just need a few little studs you could even get some really expensive materials like meteoric iron (a thumb tip sized meteorite can still cost like 10-20 bucks I think). I could somewhat feasibly make a weapon that affects every monster ever thought to walk the earth, from vampires and werewolves to jinn and jiangshi and even mankind.

I was talking about vampire weaknesses from folklore and early vampire fiction like Dracula with my housemate and we eventually came to the conclusion that vampires are very dangerous if you don’t know they’re there but extremely easy to protect yourself from once you’ve caught on to them. You don’t even have to know who the vampire is, just that they’re hunting in your neighborhood.

I fully understand why modern writers ignore a lot of the vampire mythos because what are you supposed to do with a creature that can’t hunt in daylight (either because it weakens them like Dracula or straight up kills them), can’t touch silver, have to count the bag of rice you throw on the floor, has to avoid garlic, can only get in when invited even if the human doesn’t own the house, can’t cross moving water on their own, can’t leave their coffin if you place a rose on top of it, and can’t even wake up and protect themselves if you open their coffin during the day. Dracula got fucked up by a Jack Russell Terrier in the book because he took the shape of a swarm of rats.

I mean, it would be a super interesting idea for a story about how stealthy vampires have to be to survive and how they constantly have to make sure humans don’t believe they exist because otherwise they’re fucked, but I also understand why modern writers can’t have their vampires be this easy to trip up.
