Some day I want to see a show that does the “no filler episodes” thing from the opposite direction. Just a whole season worth of low-stakes character pieces that seem to move the overall story absolutely nowhere, then episode 26 pulls all the triggers at once and this massive Rube Goldberg machine of a plot the show’s been quietly setting up in the background the whole time hits you like a truck.

I have an existential question about Harry Potter. On one hand, fuck JKR and giving her any money, time, or exposure, 100%. But on the other hand, the fandom, or at least parts of it, has been a safe place for years, and the fan content, mostly fics with way more PoCs&LGBTQ+ characters and interpretations of them, still gives joy, and a kind of vindictive pleasure that she'd probably hate with a burning passion most of my favorite fics. You wrote HP fics and currently don't, what's your... take, on all of that ?

My take is that fandom should come with a level of responsibility to real people. I'm not talking about purity tests re: fictional depictions of things that don't impact real lives, but with things like JKR's rampant transphobia. A lot of people read what I write. Not all of them go into things familiar with the fandom. If even one person reads my stuff and then gets into HP, and without realizing what JKR stands for buys the books or the movies or merch, I've contributed to giving JKR money. That money goes directly to hurting trans people.

I can't live with myself if that happens. Just the thought of it makes me feel kind of sick tbh. And HP as a fandom is NOT WORTH IT. Engaging in it, even though it's nostalgic, is not worth even the chance of hurting trans people. Yeah, it's a shame, and yeah, I would enjoy dipping into the fandom again, but like. Real people matter more than my nostalgia, and I have some pretty serious contempt for people who can know what JKR is about, know that she takes enthusiasm for her books as support of her ideals, and still say "oh it's just fandom". It's not. It's support for Rowling's ideas, it's the potential of more people pushed into giving JKR money, and more funds for her transphobia, and it's gross.

This isn't meant to come off as an attack. I'm sure you're a lovely person. But JKR is never going to see your favorite fics to hate them. Someone who has no idea about her might, though. I personally can't justify using whatever platform I have to even tangentially support her, and while I understand the arguments for keeping the fandom side of things going, I just don't think it's in any way worth it.

Also. How much of a safe space is it really, when the series has so much racism and transphobia built into it? Death of the author and all that, but like. JKR's views are literally foundational to that world. You can separate out some of it, but at some point, there's just too much to filter out.

Unrelated, Best Boy Hank Green made a cute, no subscription, not invasive and full of malwares app.

It's a cute lil app that helps you step away from your phone and leave it alone for a time you set, to stay away from distraction. If you pick up the phone, the knitting lil bean loses all of his knitting... So if you say "I'm setting down my phone for half an hour so I can efficiently clean the table and bag up the trash" it helps resisting the call of the screen. Because you can't make the bean sad. The bean is too cute.

For Knight Shen Yuan AU, have we considered Binghe hiring a wizard to ambush him and curse him never to find a wife so that he can maneuver Shen Yuan into agreeing to marry him. But Shen Yuan jumps in front of the curse instead and is all like “it’s okay, no woman would want to marry me when Binghe is right there :)”

a few nights ago lotus and poison, iconic performers and trans women, were viciously attacked at legends gay nightclub. nobody intervened in a supposed community space. please help cover their medical expenses and show them they are not alone. they were absolutely let down, and what kind of community doesn't help its most vulnerable? consider showing them support both emotionally and financially after this dual trauma of abuse and neglect.
