things about Carmilla that never make it into adaptations but I wish they did
the schloss-to-schloss salesman (and specifically the fact that he not only sells Laura and Carmilla anti-vampire charms, but he also makes Carmilla violently offended by being like "whoa your teeth are super-sharp. I'm also a travelling dentist; want me to file them down for you?" and this is NEVER addressed again)
the fact that Laura was raised by a Reddit Skeptic(tm) father so the reason she never suspects vampires is that she wasn't even allowed to read fairy tales as a child, let alone folklore
the way nobody in the household speaks quite the same combination of languages, so they end up communicating via a mishmash of English, French, and German
Laura's obsession with playing with Carmilla's hair
Carmilla getting vampired by [checks notes] someone committing suicide in her vicinity apparently?
the bit about her former "favorite" (whether lover or best friend or what) hiding her shortly after her vampiring actually kind of DID make it into, of all things, the 2010s college AU webseries and I'm impressed. it wasn't quite as it went down in the book, but still- that's a throwaway line in the text and they left it in! cool!

It is so disturbing how every time a disabled person is brutally murdered by their caregiver, the conversation revolves around what we can do to give more support to caregivers and not the welfare of disabled people and how to give people with disabilities more agency and support in escaping abusive and neglectful situations. Don’t get me wrong, caregiving is hard but I am so tired of the “I feel so bad for the caregiver, their life was so rough and then they just snapped :(” narrative and not acknowledging that the disabled individual was uniquely vulnerable and completely at the whim of someone who despised them, felt they had no inherent worth and killed them. The rates of abuse experienced by disabled people are always conveniently left out of the narrative. So often it’s twisted into something justifiable, that you should relate to the murderer and not the victim. It is so sick.

People continuing to not understand how child support works and trying to find anyway to paint single mothers receiving it as the villain is soooo headache inducing. There was one Reddit AITA story where the OP offhandedly mentioned that her mom had used her child support payments from her dad to repair the house they were living in (the post was about how her father was an emotional and mental deadbeat but did the financial bare minimum to keep from getting into legal trouble) and everybody totally ignored the contents of the post and zeroed in on that one comment. Lots of “Child support shouldn’t go towards your HOUSE or your CAR, it is for the KID only!!!!” and “You shouldn’t be mad at your dad for letting you starve, you should be mad at your mom for spending the child support money on [basic survival life upkeep].” If not for keeping a roof over a child’s head, what the fuck do you think child support is for? It’s supposed to reimburse the custodial parent for money they’ve spent on the child so what specifically they’re doing with that actual check is none of your business. But putting it towards home repairs is an extremely responsible decision and good parenting. Unlike mailing your kid $200 a month and patting yourself on the back about it.

“my teenage child is so selfish” is an interesting thing I only see online moms say about their daughters. I’ve never seen one say it about their son. I think it’s because daughters enter the teenage years and begin developing critical thinking skills and independence and it enrages these parents who were using their kids as their own little therapists and unpaid domestic laborers.

We truly need to start shaming guys who complain that their wives won’t fuck them. Truly a skill issue on their part. Stop babying them. I don’t know why this is such a common thing for straight men to complain about. Your wife won’t fuck you and she’s an evil bitch who is abusing you because she won’t fuck you, which you feel is her DUTY and OBLIGATION? She is supposed to be available to fulfill your every sexual desire 24/7 while working a full time job and doing the bulk of the childcare? Is having sex with you fun? Are you good at it? Nothing you’ve said makes me think you’re a considerate person.

Dudes will be like “50/50 custody should be automatic” solely because they don’t want to pay child support and then they get 50/50 custody and HAVE to take care of their kids 50% of the time AND pay child support because they made their ex be a SAHM and then they’re sobbing and crying and throwing up about that too. It is just bizarre to me how many of these anti-child support crusaders have no idea how child support works. Know your enemy. Dudes who have never done the bulk of the child care going for primary custody out of spite and a desire to pay no child support and then immediately regretting it always cracks me up too. Primary custody is more labor intensive and financially draining than just paying the goddamn child support but they’ll do anything to avoid coughing up $100 a week so their kid has shoes.

boomer women had the worst taste in men of any surviving generation I have gotten to interact with. and I know what you’re thinking “oh, they settled because women were dependent on men” nuh uh. the silent generation was picking better. I don’t know if it was because of the bad boy craze of the 1950s and early 60s or what but my baby boomer aunts have married some of the worst men to walk gods green earth and then mock the younger generation for having children with people they’re not married to. YOUR HUSBAND OF 30 YEARS WAS UNEMPLOYED AND CHEATING ON YOU THE WHOLE TIMEEEEEE.

There has been a crazy amount of fear-mongering about the age of first time moms getting older and older and how moms 40+ were the only demographic of women where the fertility rate rose, making it the first time in history that there are more women 40+ having children than teen pregnancies. The right is spinning this as being indicative of modern women being selfish and sewing in rhetoric about how a woman’s eggs dry up and blow away the moment she hits 30.
What is interesting is that they never mention the average age for a first time mom is 27 and the average age for a first time dad is 31. We are seeing dudes who are 50 saying “I’m not ready to settle down and start a family, I’m going to do that someday but I’m still out here seeing my wild oats.” My dad is 55 and several of his friends have had kids in the past 5 years. They’re angry at girls and women for not popping out babies the moment they start menstruating but not at men for deciding to start a family when they are GERIATRIC!
Maybe the birth rate would be higher if it was easier to find a good life partner and start a family sooner. Maybe it would be higher if there were less men dicking around for 50+ years and deciding to start a family only when they’re on the precipice of entering a nursing home, at which time their female peers have gone through menopause and the 20 something girls they chase don’t want them. It is always the fault of women when it comes to matters of reproductive health. It is their fault if they become a single mother. It is their fault if they don’t get to start a family until they’re 40+. It is their fault if they choose to be child free because of the state of the world and the amount of trust it requires to have a child with someone.
Why are grandpa-dads something we’re expected to turn a blind eye to and women over 40 having their first baby something we’re supposed to be angry at?

There is this raging battle on TikTok centering around a woman who REFUSES to buy school supplies for her children, not because she cannot afford them but simply on principle. Which is crazy to me. I cannot imagine not wanting to set your children up for success. I’ve always had a love of writing utensils and school supply shopping was the most exciting part of the year for me as a kid. It never occurred to me that some of the kids who had to bum a pencil off me had parents who just hated them like that. That is so upsetting.
