I don’t know anything about Game of Thrones, but from all the memes I’m seeing, it looks like the fan base would have actually preferred the Parks and Rec version

self reblog because we’ve had another fucking school shooting and all of this, but especially the second to last point, has been on my mind.
hello, it’s late, I’m having some *feelings* about current events, so let me tell you about the musical Assassins and why you need to check it out immediately:
- it’s about people who tried to kill/killed US presidents
- whose stories are a series of vignettes tied together by this overarching theme about the American dream (”everybody’s got the right to their dreams”)
- specifically, the show explores the idea that Americans have that they’re entitled to their American Dream
- and when it doesn’t come true for whatever reason, they’re stuck with their disillusionment and start looking for someone to blame, and reach a point where they feel like they’ve run out of options besides violence
- without spoiling anything, I’d really like to see the changes from the ‘04 revival stick around because it includes a prime example of the aforementioned disillusionment (played a certain way, it could echo modern-day indoctrination techniques, etc. really well), as well as “Something Just Broke”, which is easily one of my favorite things from anything ever
- at the very least, I highly recommend reading the book (there are defs bootlegs of the ‘04 production out there tho)
- this show does not pull its punches. it’s on the exact opposite end of the spectrum from Hamilton in terms of idealism re:America (so if you need a counterpoint to Ham-mania, there you go)
- guns play a big role in this show. Gun culture? In my musical theater? It’s more likely than you think.
- the idea that, when you look closer at them, the people who do these horrible things are perhaps not as alien to our experiences as we might like to think they are. it is an uncomfortable realization, but an important one worthy of exploration. “[I]t’s become easy to shove these people aside, to view them as a collection of freaks, un-American freaks, people outside our experience who really have nothing to teach us and nothing to say to us.” - John Weidman, writer
- in case it wasn’t clear, this show is relevant as fuck
#unpopular opinion: not wanting to understand why makes us less able to create a society where this doesn't happen#i hate the 'they killed people but uwu!' crowd as much as anyone else#but it's a mistake to shove them aside and think there's nothing to learn#both are deeply unproductive extremes of the same spectrum

if you’re distressed about what’s going on in alabama, and you are not a resident of alabama or a neighboring state, might i suggest NOT publishing a single hot take on the issue and instead give some money to yellowhammer fund
#because 'just go to another state' is the most privileged shit you can say#here's a way to ACTUALLY make that happen for people in need#protect them.#help them.#it's on us to make sure everyone can access the care they need

okay guys, there’s something we need to talk about more..
netflix just released the film ‘ek ladki ko dekha toh aisa laga’ which is an indian movie about a girl who’s into girls and how she gets the courage to come out and face her family and be with the woman she loves. sound familiar? yeah, i know it’s the basic plot of most hollywood lgbtq movies but that’s not the point.
this is literally the first indian movie i’ve seen on a famous platform, accessible by anyone, that actually represents the lgbtq community in all its beauty and love and affection, rather that scorning or mocking it.
the movie is beautiful and the scenes and the fluff and the cute couple and the emotions just make it so worth watching, and that’s not all.
i’m an indian bisexual teenager and i would’ve been so happy to have been exposed to a movie like this when i was younger. if i had seen this kind of portrayal in the film industry, i doubt that i would’ve been the afraid young girl i was and i would’ve had the courage to do what the main characters did and just BE MYSELF.
all i hope is that someone sees this movie, some little girl out there sees it and knows that she is not alone, that she is not abnormal. with a topic such as this, which has been treated as taboo for decades now in my country (still is kinda), when it is actually being represented and being represented well, i can’t help but wanna scream about it from the rooftops.
also just look at this adorableness:
anywho, REBLOG, SIGNAL BOOST THIS BECAUSE IT IS SO IMPORTANT.
