WHAT ARE CHETTINAD SAREES?
When we talk of Tamil Nadu, Kanchipuram sarees are the first thing that comes to our mind. But that’s not all. Today, we are going to talk about the Chettinad sarees also known as ‘Kandanghi’ sarees.

“The traditional wear for the new generation”
Hello all, I’m sure you’ve noticed the checks pattern in the sarees worn by the people in the South. Well yes, they are the Chettinad sarees.
Let’s start with the history and origin of the craft.
Chettinad or Chettinadu in Tamil Nadu, India has contributed to the Indian cultural scene through its famed Chettinad style of cooking and the unique Chettinad sarees.
The traditionally Chettinad saree is woven in Karaikudi and Chettinadu areas which are 57 km from Sivagangai District Headquarters. The major groups involved in weaving Chettinad Cotton Sarees are Devanga and Chettiyars who are the skilled weavers from olden days.
The distinguishing features of the Chettinad sarees are its seemingly heavy look and the striking colours that are achieved by a combination of stripes, checks and colour contrasts.
The weaving process of a Chettinad saree
Chettinad Cotton sarees are normally woven with 60s Cotton warp and 60s Cotton weft. The extra warp designs are woven with the use of Dobby.
Chettinad sarees are woven with Pit looms / Raised pit looms with fly shuttle weaving technique. The traditional type of spreading the warp behind the loom.
The size of the borders is comparatively broader than the ordinary sarees. The pallu of the sarees was woven with weft stripe.
Also, to make the saree smoother and finer, the thread count was increased. The Kandangi weavers now use synthetic fabrics and machines to survive the high demand and latest fashion.
Colours of a Chettinad saree
The Chettinad Sarees are generally woven in the traditional colours like yellow, green, red & its derivatives blue, maroon along with white and black to add richness to the sarees.
The most unique structures of the saree are its prominent colours which are brought out by the combination of stripes, colour contrasts and checks.
Recently, Chettinad saree won the ‘India Handloom’ tag for its unique designs and identity.
To jazz up your Chettinad saree, you can also pair it with an intricate kalamkari blouse and also variate the style of draping the saree. You can also pair delicate oxidised jewellery or terracotta jewellery along with your saree.
That’s all folks!

WHAT ARE KANCHIPURAM SAREES?
Borrowing its name from the village of its origin, Kanchipuram is essentially a silk saree that can well be considered South India’s answer to the more popular Banarasi saree.

We are completely drooling over the nine yards of magic and so we are back with one more, the Kanchipuram aka Kanjivaram sarees.
The silk industry in Kanchipuram is one of the fastest-growing industries in India. The industry currently employs more than 30,000 weavers in the art of saree making.
The story of the Kanjeevaram silk saree begins in Hindu mythology. The famous Kanjeevaram saree weave goes back 400 years. Legend has it that the Kanchi silk weavers are descendants of Sage Markanda, who was considered to be the master weaver for the Gods themselves.
Two major weaving communities of Andhra Pradesh the Devangas and Saligars migrated to the town of Kanchipuram. They used their excellent weaving skills to make the silk saree that bore images of scriptures and figurines found on the temples around the village.
Weaving process
Kanchipuram silk sarees are woven from pure mulberry silk. While the silk belongs to South India, the pure gold and silver zari comes from Gujarat. The silk thread that is used to weave the saree is dipped in rice water and sun-dried before it is used in order to increase both, its thickness and stiffness. The silk thread is then interlocked with a thin silver wire and woven through after which a golden thread is used to complete the procedure.
The warp frame use to weave this fabric has about 60 holes, in which there are 240 threads in the warp and 250 to 3000 threads in the weft, giving it a sturdy feel.
Special Features of a Kanchipuram saree
The colour and designs of the body and the pallu are quite different, weavers weave both of them separately and eventually join them. You can spot a zig-zag pattern known as the pitni, where the body meets the pallu.
It is also quite a common practice to weave the border of the saree separately and then join the three together. The joining of the three known as korvai, is done with such precision that even if the saree tears, the border will not detach.
Also since the zari is made of three silk threads twisted with silver wire, the fabric is extremely strong and durable. This, however, can also add to the weight, making a regular Kanjeevaram saree as heavy as two kilos.
Motifs in a Kanchipuram Saree
Kanchipuram silk sarees have stayed true to the inclusion of temple figurines and mythological stories into the design. The border of the saree comprises of motifs from the temples, palaces and general paintings, and the body includes pyramidal temple designs, checks, stripes, and floral buttas.
Over the years, the traditional and much-preferred stripes or golden dot designs have given way to more symbolic motifs such as fruits, animals, birds, the sun and the moon, The rich woven pallu showcased paintings of Raja Ravi Varma and epics of Mahabharata and Ramayana.
Kanchipuram sarees vary widely in cost depending upon the intricacy of work, colors, pattern, the material used like zari (gold thread), etc. The silk is also known for its quality and craftsmanship, which has helped earn its name.
Colours of a Kanchipuram saree
The sarees are known for their vibrant colours and eye-catching designs, which are mainly inspired by the scriptures and figurines from the very many temples in this small village. Since the pallu and the body of the saree differ in colour and design, you can expect a variety of contrasting shades too.
The price range of a Kanchipuram saree
An original saree with pure silk and pure zari can cost anywhere between Rs. 7000 and Rs.2,00,000.
To cut down on the cost you also get budgeted versions like the pure silk plus imitation zari or the half silk-half synthetic plus imitation zari saree, which manage to hold on to the sheen of the original but lose out on the durability of the fabric. These sarees cost a lot less and can be bought at a price of just Rs.2,000 to Rs.5,000. However, these are not considered to be originals.
Care guide for your saree
Dry cleaning is the most preferred method to maintain the saree. However, if you do have to wash the saree at home avoid using soap during the first three washes. A rinse in cold water is more than enough. It is advisable to store the saree separately in a plastic or saree bag.
Owing to the thick fabric and deep colours mixed with hints of gold, this saree is preferred for festive occasions and celebrations, especially for bridal attires. Like with most silk sarees, you can count on Kanjeevaram or Kanchipuram silk sarees to be the perfect outfit choice when you are looking for a classy ethnic option.
That’s all folks
Stay tuned for more.

TOP 6 THINGS FASHION INDUSTRY CAN LEARN FROM SACRED GAMES (ON NETFLIX)
People are going crazy watching season 2 of SACRED GAMES (first Indian original series) on Netflix. With an amazing plot with some brain exploding dialogues, it has become the most viewed and loved series of this year. Being from the fashion field, I twisted some reel seems into real-life lessons that one can actually think and learn over it. Let us see how it worked for us:
‘Kabhi kabhi to lagta hai apun hi bhagwan hai’ – Nawazuddin Siddiqui (From Sacred Games Season 1)
Grab the opportunity

Fashion changes rapidly if you are not on your toes you better be running for it soon. Sitting and waiting for a godfather to come and give you an opportunity will never happen. You have to take a chance and grab the offer you want. Gaitonde’s (Nawazudin Siddhiqui) character grabbed the single moment in which he finds his boss alone in a river, even though his only friend Mathu has abandoned the plan and when others things have failed.
Make your mark

Ganesh Gaitonde dies at the end of the first episode but before blowing out his own brain, he tells Sartaj (Saif Ali Khan), “Ashwathama hai apun, kabhi nahi marega.”
Every day, a new trend is being envisioned and new boundaries are broken in this industry. Your work must create a huge positive impact on people that they remember your name even if you leave that particular firm.
Be a risk taker
Gaitonde often said: ‘Kabhi kabhi to lagta hai apun hi bhagwan hai’. He loved to believe in himself. a small line but a strong point. Basically, in fashion industry nobody has the time to train anybody. You have to be your own unless you have big contacts. So simple mantra, when nobody believes in you have to follow and do what is correct. Take risk to create your niche and the world be yours.
Choose quality over quantity

When Katekar, is pressured to investigate the disappearance of a young man from a Muslim slum. Katekar dies in this episode, and Sartaj ends up killing Katekar’s murderer. Katekar is then cremated, and Sartaj kills his old self turning into somebody new.
This episode reminds that to sustain for long in the market, you have to bring quality change and create new stuff for future. Every season demands some innovation and freshness.
Never stop trying
When Gaitonde proclaims that one day Kukoo will be his, everyone thinks he is just being too ambitious. He is not even allowed to enter the club where Isa’s men and Kukoo meet every night. Gaitonde never stopped because of his present, he did overcome and made his future. I believe this same kind of spirit should be there in every fashionista as the sky is the limit.
Brain over money
In a world run by guns and muscle power, he stares right back at the monster with courage– that, right there, is when he wins over the town. Ganesh Gaitonde becomes the undisputed god of Mumbai’s underbelly. Not with power, but with sheer courage. Same goes with the people who are creative but have no money to start with. Guys, just generate the idea and explode it in fashion (only field who welcomes everything).
I am sure after reading this you will bend to agree with me at some point. The above is just a small fun read to storm your brain a little. Let us know if you have any thought to share
