Seeing that MJ2 made $101 mil opening weekend, compared to MJ1’s $121 mil, Catching Fire’s $158 mil, and The Hunger Games’ $152 mil is kinda sad. Obviously, a $100 million opening weekend is nothing to bat an eye at but this just shows how arrogant and complacent Lionsgate got with their marketing. So many people I knew had no idea that this last one was even coming out this week, because they never saw any commercials or ads for it. They never were going to have the biggest movie of the year, what with Jurassic World, Star Wars, etc but had they kept the momentum going à la Harry Potter, or even Twilight for goodness’ sake, we could’ve been looking at some different numbers.
wHatEvEr, they as a studio are never going to ever get the kind of money/critical acclaim they got from this franchise so 🙃 good luck in the future Lionsgate! xo
