‘colom.’  it’s the only acknowledgement she has for him at first, unless the crinkling of the plastic cup in her hand is to be counted, denting in at the sides with her tightened grip before she reminds herself that she can’t toss it into his face. these are chris’s people, she won’t embarrass him, no matter how well - deserved the potential scene might be.  ‘think i’d rather die, thanks.’  she glances over at him, eyes widening meaningfully as she flashes him a scathing smile. in another life she’d have swung on him, but while colom, for all his polished new york journalist sleaze-charm, is still every bit of the entitled prick she remembered him to be, she’d taken pains to leave some of her uglier instincts on the plane when she got off in LaGuardia over a year and a half ago. 

‘weird that you don’t have anything better to do right now. i’d think you had people to talk to. ‘less of course, you talk to everyone like that, then i can see how you’re in the corner with me. two years sober, by the way. fuckface.’

“   𝐭𝐰𝐨 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬,  𝐡𝐮𝐡?   that’s good.   great.   so,   what,   you’re almost done?   “   he parries her scornful expression with his own wide eyed look of expectation.   his brows were taut up towards his hairline and the pit of his cheek began to deepen as his smile got wider.  worse.   he appreciated this.   he appreciated a lot of things about fiona,   and he had always respected the resourcefulness of her family back home,   the way it sharpened them.   maybe it wasn’t the first thing that came to mind when he thought of it,   but your first thought doesn’t really count,   does it?   “   good to know you retained your sense of humor,   gallagher.   “   his mouth wraps around her surname with the same crack at contempt,   but clearly,   his heart wasn’t in it.

“   𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐛𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐲𝐨𝐮.   “   completely understandable that when presented with a choice between spending precious downtime with their families mid holiday season or stomaching the most offensively expensive gluten free catering service available for the enrichment of office morale as though the tone deaf gesture truly bridges the wage gap between the vertical line of authority,   most people would choose to stay home.   not colom,   though.   his family isn’t interesting enough to be worth the airfare to chicago,   and if he isn’t endangering the water then he gets bored,   he sinks,   he dies,   like a shark.
