What should I (a small human) do when life's problems seem so hopelessly big?

Focus on small things that you can handle.

That maybe sounds dumb when I put it like that. But it's how I survived my day job at the company. I couldn't control 99% of the shit that was going on or the decisions the clients made, but I could make my security reports, pick out shows to pull down from the company satellites, and secretly hide information about clients from the company (for the clients that I didn't completely hate). And then later after I actually got away from the company, I was able to really start to figure out what I wanted to do with myself and figure out what the hell "agency" and "self determination" are anyway.

99% of the bullshit that happens in the world is not stuff you have control over. But there's small stuff that seems silly but is good for helping you stay sane, like media or other hobbies. Plus there might be some small stuff you can do to help yourself or the people around you. Focus your energy on what you can do.

I'm visiting some dear friends of mine this week, and all of us have at least one disability. While we were eating breakfast this morning we were discussing the impact medication has on our lives.

I was sharing how difficult everything was for me when I had moved to a new city where the cost of housing was much more expensive and I couldn't afford medication. Over the course of the year, my energy deteriorated rapidly. First I couldn't keep up with my job, then I couldn't keep up with housework, then I couldn't keep up with basic hygiene, and eventually even chewing and swallowing became difficult. Sometimes walking to the train, I thought about lying down on the side of the road and how long it would take before a cop would force me to move. I wanted to die but I didn't even have the energy to figure out how.

My friend asked me if I had chronic fatigue. I don't know, because I was never diagnosed. I don't claim it because right now I'm very functional. I can keep up with hygiene, cook, clean, do work, and even exercise! But this is only possible from the combination of four different medications. Right now, I am extremely fortunate in that I have much of my medical expenses covered by my wife's health insurance that she has through work. I pay $415 USD every month for these things I need. I can never take this for granted because I know so vividly how difficult it is to survive without them.

ART yelling at its crew to do their laundry because Murderbot's important person Dr Mensah is going to be onboard and it needs to make a good impression because it wants Mensah to approve of their 'relationship' and be okay with them 'moving in together', and then being so nice to Dr Mensah when it's been an overbearing, domineering, sarcastic nightmare the whole book is something that is so special to me

My favorite small detail in the Murderbot Diaries is how many of the shitty corporations have names that sound like two names mashed together—GrayCris, BreharWallHan, Barish-Estranza, etc—because to me it just screams “corporate merger.” It’s something that real companies do with their names when they’re monopolizing, where two companies of comparable sizes just mash their two brands together to make a horrible Frankenbrand. Like how it’s Warner Bros-Discovery now, or the names of publishing companies like Penguin Random House and HarperCollins. It’s just some subtle worldbuilding that signifies how the dystopian capitalist hellscape of the Corporation Rim formed through the very mundane acts of corporate inbreeding that we see all the time

my biggest issue with the httyd live action-and just about any live action reboot is that it seems that the live action adaptations are being made to make the original “better”? like, so many people talk about a live action spiderverse, a live action hercules, a live action PRINCE OF EGYPT (dont piss me OFF.)-like animation is a beautiful work of art, and for some reason putting real people and cgi in it is supposed to be an “upgrade”? im probably being that friend that’s too woke or whatever, but i just think it’s so disrespectful to act like something that takes so much time and effort and energy is immediately considered as lower because it is animated. animation is beautiful, and it is one of the most heartfelt art forms there are, and erasing that for the sake of a cash grab is downright degrading to animation as a medium.
