They're loud assholes to people who need to be yelled at, but theyre actually hella introverted.

Mia "i think fast i talk fast" Dearden will mouth off at villains and batman, and take the piss out of people she loves. BUT she wasn't exactly shown to have like a friend group at her school (she was shown to be popular. but we only see her specifically interact with one person), and was extremely nervous to join the titans, not because they intimidated her, but because she didnt really...want to be there. She'd rather be with people she knows. She spends most of her time practicing archery, even before she was speedy. The only time we ever saw her go out anywhere was on a date with Dodger. And I will be pretending for the sake of this post that all of this is bc of character stuff and not just bad writing!

Similarly, Ollie "goateed loudmouth" Queen thrives when he's alone, he prefers it, he rarely spends time with people outside of his family or close close friends. He'll rant and rave at leaguers and cops and capitalists and villains all day long, but he's at his happiest and most content when he's alone, and often when on the move too, this man cannot sit still he is like a fucking shark he will die if he is in the same place too long but thats unrelated to this post.

As is pretty much a requirement to be in the arrowfam. Neither of them are here to fight the big alien threats you take on while being in the league/titans. They're here to save the little guy and fuck up capitalists. They have both seen the worst of society on the very opposite ends of the spectrum, Ollie with the rich, Mia with those the rich forget or ignore. I don't think I really need to add an example of Ollie here considering thats like his main this if u know anything about him. But look heres mia thinking abt it in her first titans issue.

Now with coping mechanisms they're a lil different, Mia tends to isolate and stay in one place. Ollie will isolate but fuck off somewhere. Accidentally walk to canada. That sorta thing.

They also both mask their emotions and deflect with humour when around other people, they don't want others to have to deal with their shit, they don't want to burden them (hence the isolation, this also often leads to them imploding in on themselves). Heres my most favourite example of their similarities ever (yes I will continue to post and talk about this specific thing every 3 weeks and no one can stop me) I do owe Hester my life for this

Now heres the best part. They both did this a lot right. And yknow what that led to? Learning and growing and being there for each other :] Now im going to be honest we dont really see this growth in vol 3 bc judd winick is incapable of writing character development but! Phil Hester is here for us once again with his story in the 80th special and this part specifically <3

Also once again a whole arrowfam thing- neither of them give two shits about their secret id lmao. I choose to believe Mia is so flippant about hers bc she so easily realised Ollie was GA that she just went like. Yeah sure I won't give a fuck either, it's clearly working for him.

the Justice League's identities all get publically leaked but before the dust has settled someone on twitter is like 'OMG i can't believe you guys are actually buying this obviously fake leak. look at this 'Billy Batson' person's birthday, he would only have been 11 years old when Captain Marvel started operating? how are you people so dumb'

immediately throws the whole thing into doubt. everyone going over the other ID information looking for other potential discrepancies. 'they expect us to believe Superman is some journalist called Clark Kent? they don't even look alike' and 'look at this Hal Jordan guy next to Green Lantern their facial structures aren't the same at all' and 'this Diana Prince woman has NO web presence, I don't think she's a real person'

someone brings up that Wally West is clearly too young to have been operating as the Flash the entire time but then people from Central City are like no no that one might be legit, it's common knowledge locally that there's been more than one Flash.

this sparks the idea that perhaps the original Captain Marvel died or retired and was replaced with a new guy at some point. another whole group of people now scrutinising images of him trying to identify when the '''''switch'''' happened.

someone doing a deep local newspaper archive sweep turns up a photo of CC Batson accompanying a story abt his archaeology work, everyone agrees that Captain Marvel has his exact face, takes 0.2 seconds to join the dots that he officially died not long before Captain Marvel first appeared and Billy is his son. 2 Captain Marvels theory, previously dismissed as nonsense by most reasonable people, now looking very plausible.

Justice League and associates (initially sweating) now just pouring fuel on the fire. Oracle has made dozens of sockpuppet accounts to spread chaos and discord. official Flash account insisting that actually everyone is mistaken and he's definitely 100% been one guy this whole time. Lois Lane on twitter like 'do you guys think I wouldn't know if my husband was Superman'.

Personally, no. Mia’s always seemed to me as very target-oriented, and I don’t know that a college degree would help her achieve her goals. She’s got her vigilantism, and I presume she’s got a plethora of community organising during the day. If she wants the Theory of Leftist Thought, she can stick a quarter in Ollie and let him go. Right now, she’s got work to do.

Okay, Mia Dearden fans, I'm curious:

Do you think she would want to go to college?

And what profession do you think she might like to pursue? Or does she just live off of whatever trust fund Ollie set up for her forever and just vigilante around full-time?

(At least she better have a hefty trust fund. Whether or not Ollie has money at any given time is based on a complicated algorithm involving the alignment of the moon and stars, the color of his piss today, and whether or not a very particular coyote in Montana saw a pinecone this morning.)

I don't think we talk enough about how insanely persistent and intelligent Mia actually is. Like... I don't mean that she's the best archer. She's not "better" than Ollie, or Roy, or Connor. She's probably not "better" than Emiko or Cissie, either. I mean more that all of those people have been shooting for years -- literally since childhood, some almost from birth -- and Mia didn't even touch a bow for the first time until some nebulous point when she was 15. And she became Speedy officially almost right on her 17th birthday (within a week, give or take). Like, think about that? She went from completely untrained, likely in poor-to-fair health at best, to peak athleticism and keeping up with the greatest archers in the world in less than two years. While also juggling an undiagnosed major illness, playing catch-up with several years of lost education, and recovering from severe childhood trauma. She started much later than everybody else, and with significant barriers to her physical, mental, and emotional health, and still picked up a brand new skill and worked it to an almost superhuman level in a shockingly short amount of time.

That's actually a little bit insane. And it's a testament to both her determination to learn, and to Connor's abilities as a teacher. It's a shame we didn't really get to see him train her on-panel much. We got to see Mia training herself quite a bit -- which is important, because it drives home how hard she worked and how much iron-balled initiative she took with her own goals -- but her actual training with Connor and, later, Ollie was almost entirely off-panel. Anyway, let's give Mia Dearden credit for being the little phenom that she is.

I still say one of the bravest things I've ever seen a character do in the comics was Mia after realizing she had HIV, going to her school and telling the other kids about it so that they would be better educated.
