I’m in moving/last-month-of-my-day-job mode right now, which is crazy. I decided it was probably time to leave months ago, so to think I only have a month left is a relief after this year has been dragging on. Knowing what I need to be doing is a huge weight off my shoulders, but it does drive me a little crazier the longer I don’t get to do it.
Another thing that drives me crazy is when I get so busy that I don’t even have time to take photos. Which is fine, things come in waves, and I’m a month away from my photo pilgrimage out west where I will get to indulge myself in a way never seen before.
A solution to this problem is my upcoming podcast: Out of Focus, and I’m working on recording new episodes as we speak. It’s about photography in a round about way, which is what I’ve been looking for from other photography influencers online and I’m just not getting.
Running a photography business is soooooooo much more than taking photos or what camera you’re shooting with, and it is rarely talked about. To be an effective photographer, you need to be skilled technically in photography, yes, but you also need to be a skilled business person as well as a very social person who understands human psychology. If you’re good with a camera, and think you’re ready to run a business, you’re gonna have a rude awakening (I know, because I learned this in my early days).
I can look at Instagram or Youtube for tips on how to better run a photography business, and yes, I’ll find a lot of helpful stuff, but they aren’t interesting. There’s two types of material in relation to photography right now: Fun tutorials with almost no practical day to day information or philosophy, just info about gear and technical aspects, or, overlong, boring, informational stuff about “how to” more specifically that you’ll never make past 2 minutes in.
My solution (because you can only watch so many videos about gear) has been to learn from those outside of the photography world who know nothing about photography, but they know something about business or people or some other applicable thing. There are so many things I fail at that I need more intelligent people than myself to help with that gear or taking pictures won’t solve. That’s what I’m working towards right now with my podcast and that idea will expand into other things eventually.
I’m really excited to release this podcast, but I want to do it right, so I’m gonna wait just a little longer. Go ahead and subscribe on your favorite podcast app so you’re alerted when it comes out!

In 2015, I started a podcast that I ran weekly for an entire year. It was something I was passionate about, but I had to end it due to life events and the general need to figure some stuff out. I wanted to use it as a way to talk to people making stuff, people I can learn from, and people who have a desire to build. It was called The 365, a title based on my year long photo projects (of which I’m doing my last under the 365 moniker). It’s now 2018, and I’m moving forward. We’re moving from Chattanooga, and I’m growing my business into my full-time job. After a lot of rummunation, I’ve determined that the podcast would be an important part of my business, so it’s coming back! My podcast will now be named Out of Focus, a photography podcast for everyone. I have interests in all kinds of things that end up contributing to my photography work, whether it be painters, chefs, and even socialogists. I believe that there’s something to be learned from everything and everyone, not just other photographers. That’s what my podcast will deal with, and I’m really excited about it. It’s a big part of the business I’m building right now, with more things to come. First full episode with my first guest will be released soon, and my podcast will also be used to document mine and my wife’s upcoming road trip (and secretly my photography pilgrimage) The Will and Anna Power Tour 2018. It’s on now baby! (Day 267) #365strikesagain (at Chattanooga, Tennessee) https://www.instagram.com/p/BoIFGNFnmuk/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=6bx4e0vni4pl

Day 266: I like beer.
Oh and I ordered a Pixel 2 today. Yeah yeah yeah I know we're in phone upgrade season, but only suckers need the newest one. Phones are so iterative now; all I need is a podcast/Instagram machine with a decent camera. Not only that, but I've had an iPhone since 2010, and I can tell you that they basically haven't changed in a decade. This year is all about changes, so why the hell not?
