Wipe Out MS, is about bringing awareness to Multiple Sclerosis (MS) an unpredictable, relatively unknown and largely misunderstood disease of the central nervous system. There are nearly 1 million living in the United States with this condition. We have walked in the OKC Walk MS event since 2010. The Heat Is On
When I was diagnosed in 2008 with Multiple Sclerosis I didn't have any problems with the heat.
Starting about 3 years ago we went on vacation to Ohio. It was a little cooler than the weather we had in Oklahoma. While we have days in Central Oklahoma that are humid, what I encountered was worse. There were several times it affected my walking.
Last year I found at times my heat sensitivity had gotten worse. How bad? We spent some time with a relative at their home. One day they decided to take a shower, so they closed the vent in the bathroom to keep warm. A short time after they were done I need to use the toilet. I found it was still warm from the shower and it was also steamy. I was only in there a few minutes. But I quickly found I couldn't walk. That's right in a matter of minutes I went from walking to needing help just to get to the living room. Sitting by an air conditioning vent and having a cold drink helped. After about a half-hour I was able to walk again.
This year the temperature has been hot and with the record rain it's very muggy. Particularly in June, falling has become a daily event. To understand how bad I've been, here's an example. I had a doctor's appointment in the early afternoon. It was 84° and the heat feel like temperature was 85°. My wife took me to the doctor's appointment. I walked about 40 feet from the house to the car. A 30 minute ride with air conditioning helped. When we arrived at the doctors office she drove up to the entrance and I walked about 20 feet to get into the air conditioning. Then I had about 100 feet to get in the office. Due to my overactive bladder caused by my Multiple Sclerosis I had to pee. I had trouble getting to the restroom and in trying to get out I nearly fell. I had to call for help. The doctor and 2 of his staff came to the rescue preventing me from falling. We were there a little over an hour. I wasn't 100% when we left. My wife and I decided to stop at the dispensery as I needed more edibles. Once again I had short walk that was difficult.
When we finally got home the heat was getting to me and I needed help. Getting in was a relief but getting inside a few feet I fell. At that point I couldn't move either leg.I knew I was over heated. So I had my wife bring a fan over to help me cool off. She also helped me take my shirt, shoes and compression socks off. I laid there about 20 minutes before I could get up.
Around 60% of people with MS are heat sensitive.

This is a good article about some of invisible issues with MS. It also answers some questions that people have about MS. Like I've been asked a number of times, can you catch Multiple Sclerosis.
Another topic that is covered is MS support groups. They recommend that everyone with MS should join a support I agree with too.

This is good information on Multiple Sclerosis and how Karen Scoby woke up one morning with MS. I've known 4 people who were normal when they went to bed and in waking up the next morning they were either couldn't walk or were paralyzed.
