Fish Cakes for Mental Energy + Successful Studies 🐟✨️📖
As a Canadian witch with East Coast roots, I am especially fond of fish cakes! The crispy salty goodness of fresh fried fish evokes a nostalgic longing for days spent wandering the seaside and collecting stones on the beach. This recipe also kept me fed through University, as it incorporates affordable and delicious ingredients that are nutritious and easily accessible. This is also a quick meal to whip up when pressed for time, making it a delicious and convenient treat that delivers a high protein energy boost for long nights of studying, and seemingly never ending mid-summer days. I apologize for the lack of precise measurements, as much like my grandmother, I tend to measure foods in subjective handfuls and pinches, based on “the vibes” of the dish or the day.
✨️ Magickal Associations ✨️
It was once thought that fish cooked with dill would help to boost brain power, as it would energize the mind. This makes sense considering the high vitamin B12 content of fish, which is important for brain health, as well as the magickal associations of dill with the planet Mercury, which corresponds with intelligence. Many of the ingredients in this recipe also correspond with grounding, love, and joy, making this a helpful dish for finding focus and promoting passion and joy in one's studies! The protection + fertility-inducing ingredients may also help to prompt the development of creative ideas and the completion of projects, hence why this recipe was a key indulgence for me during finals season.
Note: For this particular batch, I ran out of crackers, so I supplemented the recipe with a small handful of oats. Sounds weird but it worked!
Ingredients
1 can tuna: Love + energy
1 large egg: Protection, fertility, grounding
1-2 tbsp mayo: Same associations as egg
½ cup bread crumbs or crushed crackers (I use GF Breton Crackers that I crush in a plastic bag, although you could also use a large mortar and pestle if you’re feeling fancy): Grounding
2 pinches of cumin seeds: Peace + joy
1 tbsp cornstarch: For binding/thickening the cakes
1 finely chopped green onion: Protection
Finely chopped dill: Love, intelligence, mental energy
A dash of lemon pepper salt: Love + Protection
Black pepper: Protection
Grated aged white cheese - as much as your heart desires, or in my case, as much as my stomach will tollerate: Love
Directions:
1. Cleanse your space (literally/spiritually) and light a candle while cooking to bring in some invigorating solar energy into your cooking!
2. Crack an egg into a medium sized bowl, stirring clockwise (to stir in your intentions for mental energy + successful studies) until the whites and yolk are well combined.
3. Add mayo and continue to stir clockwise.
4. Add well drained tuna (to avoid soggy fish cakes) and stir in the remaining ingredients.
5. Heat a pan on medium heat and grease well with canola/any high temp cooking oil.
6. Form the mix into balls (I usually make 3) and place them on the pan, flattening them with a spatula.
7. Cook until well browned and both sides, flipping them halfway to ensure optimal crispiness.
Enjoy with a summer salad of choice or roasted veggies if made in the winter months!
PS:
I made my summer salad with leftover ingredients from my fridge. I included greens from a local garden plot (for money/prosperity), Ontario-grown carrots (love) + blueberries (protection), and a garlic/caesar vinaigrette (protection + health). Sorry for the out of focus pic, I was too hungry to perfect my food photography lol
Sources:
Made this recipe in Uni but it’s definitely inspired by east coast dishes and my grandmother's cooking!

Choose your spell ingredients intentionally
It's all well and good to Google "spiritual protective herbs" and pick a couple random ones off the list, but do you understand why that herb is protective? Does it align with your intention?
I've always liked to use baking as an analogy for spellwork:
Let's say you want to bake a cake - yummy! You'll need flour for the basic structure, sugar to sweeten, eggs to bind the ingredients, a fat for texture and a leavening agent to make it rise.
So you pop to the shops and you grab bread flour, icing sugar, eggs, shortening and yeast.
Technically, these are all correct: bread flour is a flour, icing sugar is a sugar, yeast is a leavening agent etc. And they all work great for other baked goods! Yeast is great at making bread rise and icing sugar is super sweet on top of a cupcake.
But if you mix all of these together, the final result probably isn't going to be what you wanted. Why? Well because you haven't understood why each ingredient is needed or how a cake works!!
When crafting a spell it's important to understand what your intention is and how the spell is going to work - it can also help to think about how certain ingredients might interact within the spell.
The best way to start doing this is to experiment. Have a go at crafting your own spells and working with different ingredients. What does their folklore say? What does their energy feel like? How do they interact with the other ingredients! Keep a journal or notebook full of your notes as you build up your knowledge!

Nettle! A stinging herb with a long history of medicinal and magical use. I love drinking iron rich nettle tea to help with my energy levels/anemia. I also like to use nettle in protection rituals, taking my time to meditate with this herb it surrounding me in a stinging net of protective energy.
Nettle grows almost everywhere now, especially in swampy/watery areas. This means that you can forage it to your hearts content, but be warned, that sting is not to be underestimated! Wear thick and protective clothing to prevent unwanted stings. Make sure to only take what you need and show thanks for your harvest 💚
Please consult with your doctor before taking any herb medicinally - remember that plants are also medicine!

I love tumeric with all of my heart 💛
It is genuinely one of my most used herbs, I use tumeric in my tea, soups, and curries for it's vibrant colour and tremendous medicinal benefits. Making golden milk from scratch is an especially peaceful and rewarding experience for me. It grounds me with each sip, as I visualize the root rising from the earth and blossoming into a beautiful flower.
Golden Milk Recipie 💛
1 tsp tumeric
Coconut milk/oat milk/whatever milk you'd like actually
1 tsp of cinnamon
1 tsp black pepper
1 tsp ginger
1/2 tsp nutmeg
1/2 tbsp coconut oil
Heat in a small saucepan on medium.
While heating this mixture, stir clockwise while infusing the milk with your intent. For example, if I'm making this for protection, I might visualize a golden circle around me while stirring.
Draw a pentagram 3 times over the sauce pan and call your intent into being (e.g. say "I am divinely protected" or "I am healthy"). Once the mixture is sufficiently heated, serve in a cozy mug and share with friends/family 💛
I would love to hear some suggestions for using tumeric in other spell work and recipies!

Hello witches, faeries, and herbalists of tumblr!
My name is Fern, i'm a 23 year old green/kitchen witch, and i've been practicing for about 9 years. I'm going to use this blog as digital herb guide for beginner herbalists and witchy folks. I love learning about the medicinal and spiritual properties of herbs and plants, but I have a terrible memory, so this will allow me to document the properties of the plants that I work with. I like to include my sources to encourage further research and prevent misinformation. Please note that I don't intend to use scientific evidence or health claims to support magical and spiritual claims. Whether you believe that plants hold spiritual significance or not, please don't conflate evidence for one benefit as evidence for another. Whether you are just interested in herbalism or a practicing witch/spiritual person, I hope you enjoy this collection ☺️🌿✨️

Jar of Sunshine - Lemon Curd
So I've shared stories about Lemons and I've shared stories about Eggs. Both items are staples in cooking and baking, but I thought I'd share a recipe that uses mainly these two ingredients. Lemon Curd.
Now, I'll be the first one to admit that the name "Lemon Curd" for a dish is not the most appetizing sound. It almost sounds like milk that has curdled so bad, it's as sour as lemon juice. Instead, I call it a jar of sunshine, as magically, it harnesses the best parts of the ingredients' solar energy. Lemons have been connected with the sun and this recipe uses mainly Egg Yolks. This allows you to help bring out some of the best aspects of solar energy like Passion, Courage, Energy, Inspiration, Rejuvenation and Joy. The later two I find I get the most out of with this recipe.
Need: 1 Cup White Sugar 2 Tbsp Lemon Zest 6 Egg Yolks 1/2 Cup Lemon Juice 1/2 Cup Butter 1/2 tsp lemon extract (Optional)
Zest your Lemons and add to sugar. Incorporate these together well to activate the oils of the lemon zest. You can shake in a bag, use a food processor, or just mix really, really well.
Juice your Lemons, taking care to keep seeds out. Add your juice and egg yolks into a pot. Whisk well. Slowly add your sugar and lemon zest mixture, stirring well with whisk. If you want lemon extract, add it now.
Place your pot on low heat and whisk continuously. Keep stirring until the mixture thickens and starts to bubble. This is going to take a while, but don't stop stirring or turn up the heat. It’s ready when you stick a wooden spoon in and it coats your spoon in yellow.
Remove from heat, and add your butter. Make sure it is cold and cubed. Continue stirring until butter has melted.
Pour your finished mixture through a fine mesh strainer. This will ensure your curd is smooth and silky. Put mixture in a glass jar with lid. Let cool at room temperature for an hour before lidding and putting in fridge. It will set completely in fridge. Will last several weeks in fridge and months in freezer.
Tip: -Do not stop whisking when eggs are on heat. Failing to do so may cause the eggs to overcook and become lumpy. -If your stove doesn’t go low enough, consider cooking in a double boiler. -Two Lemons should yield your needed Zest and Juice. -Use fresh lemon juice. The pre squeezed stuff you can get in a bottle will not cut it. -You can easily separate egg yolks from the egg white by tipping the egg back and forth between the shells. Or Gently use your hands to separate the yolk from the whites. -Do not fret if some egg white mixes in with your yolk. -Let your lemon curd cool completely before using it in baking. -When you make your lemon curd and you want it to have max solar energy, make sure you are cooking during the day. Not at night or in the evening. -Use less or even no lemon extract if you do not want your lemon curd to taste too strong.

💫witch tip💫
because i once again forgot to add this to my list post, but have something that breaks up the stagnant energy in your rooms. like an analog clock cuz it's hands are always moving. or a lava lamp, or wind chimes.
something to keep energy moving in the room instead of letting it settle and build up
or you can be the movement. nowadays a lot of people are prone to doomscrolling. i personally believe that's a form of stagnant energy or gathering stagnant energy. i hold your hand when i say this (because im not immune to it either) but get up and interact with your space, acknowledge your space, appreciate your space, show some love to the items that surround you because they're there and pixels aren't tangible.
