The final piece, which is titled 鹤灵 (The Crane), depicts an ethereal red-crowned crane perched gently on a woman’s shoulder, mirroring its owner’s deep thoughts. Hi I hope this isn’t a dumb question but I saw that you answered another question about the meaning of er-gege and I was wondering if gege was like oppa in that it’s normally women who say it to older men or is it normal for guys to also say it?

Hi! No worries, it’s a bit confusing. I don’t understand the ins and outs of it myself, I think women would normally only say it to older guys if they have a more intimate relationship (or maybe on the internet, fans might use it?). Either way, it’s a cutesy term of address. I think usually women call their older male friends ge or surname-ge.

I don’t think it’s a term guys generally use? I could be wrong. I did once see a video of two musical actors reading each other’s fan letters and they got embarrassed reading gege out loud since it’s not something they’d call each other even though they’re good friends.

(of course, it’s an actual kinship term for ‘older brother’ as well, so anyone would use it to say ‘i have an older brother/two older brothers etc)

pls correct me if i’m wrong. when I was young, I used to call everyone 哥哥 and 姐姐 (in cantonese), but I’m pretty sure that’s bc I don’t actually know cantonese (also they were way older, I was like 10 lol). I know a weird mix of set phrases and some ‘baby talk’ language lol so take what I say with a grain of salt.

Today is a good day to remind people that Queen Liliuokalani was deposed by the US Government because of sheer greed, racism, and misogyny. 

The Hawaiian Islands were made a territory and then a state because of greed. Because of coffee and pineapples and sugar cane. Because the US gov’t did not want to be beholden to a Queen of Hawaii, or any Hawaiian leader for that matter. And neither did the people wanting to sell those products so they pressured the US gov’t (like they continue to do). 

The Hawaiian islands are seeking to become a true sovereign nation with political recognition of their sovereignty. Please consider purchasing goods from Native Hawaiians rather than the haole, outsider corporations that are selling the same thing and undercutting. Also consider supporting the various Native Hawaiian organizations (NHOA) found here and here.
