UNSCRIPTED ROMANCE
roh jaewon x fem reader ! fluff. strangers to lovers.
summary ୨୧. in which roh jaewon secretly begins to gain a small crush towards a girl who feeds stray cats near the bus stop.
author's note ୨୧. my undivided love for roh jaewon made me write a whole ass fic of my own since there are barely any writings for him. pls make fics of him.
It was never uncommon for Roh Jaewon to come across a cat or two, seeing as it is normal for cats to roam around freely even with some of them having their collars around their neck. He never fails to crouch down for a bit and give them a scratch or two behind their ears once he seems them friendly, despite being a lover and an owner of a dog himself.
He's always surrounded by one or maybe two of them, their soft meows earning a small smile from his face after a day's hard work.
Though in this particular cloudy day, he didn't expect to see so many of them all at once.
It was behind the bus stop he always go to. They were all circling around a girl, their wide eyes following her every single move as she feeds them with the food she seems to have brought for them.
It wasn't strange, but most people in the area would simply pass by them without so much of a glance, or similar to him, give them just a small brief of attention before eventually leaving them. It made him feel slightly guilty.
But the sight before him made him stop paying attention to anything else, watching discreetly from the bench of the bus stop, unconsciously fixing his glasses as if he suddenly feels the need to when your eyes briefly met for a second.
He could hear your voice, softly murmuring to the crowd of cats to keep eating their fill as her hand gently brushes against their soft fur while she pets them.
The people who walked by you would struggle to pass by with the cats blocking their path, making them almost tip toe around just to avoid themselves from tripping on their feet.
It was only when the bus eventually came that he manages to tear his eyes away, stands up from the bench. His hands patting down on whatever dust clings on his clothes as he steps foot on the stairs leading up to the bus. He picked a seat with no other passengers, wanting a window to himself.
Busying himself with the view outside, he didn't noticed that the same girl from before was actually waiting for the bus just like him, making him take a second glance for him to realize you were the same girl from just a few minutes ago.
You had sat on the opposite side from him, putting on the headphones settled around your neck as you start to pick a song from your phone.
He manages to see a glimpse of your screen, not being able to help his lips from parting when he saw you choose from one of the songs in your playlist that he has also been listening to for the last couple of days.
He started to innocently hum the tune of the song, only stopping when he catches your eye because you heard him. He looked away immediately, feeling shy from what he just did. So he decided to distract himself with his phone throughout the entire ride.
That night, the scene from the bus earlier kept him awake at night, groaning into his pillow when he remembers that embarrassing moment.
He saw you again at the same bus stop. But this time there was only one, and it's merely a kitten. It was mewling inside a box, your familiar form in that crouched position. The cat seemingly having been abandoned by its previous owner, is now in the care of your hands.
When the bus arrives just like any other day, he already expected you to board it after him, but what he didn't expect is for you to bring along the little fellow in the box with you.
His wide eyes watches as you walked towards an unoccupied seat, which is right beside his. The bus was crowded today, but if there weren't any other seats, he would have lended you his own, not wanting you to strain your arms with the weight of you carrying a box with a cat in it.
He continued stealing glances from you, especially of the kitten who has every people on the bus admiring it. Some started taking pictures to post in their social media, while some admire in hushed whispers.
There were definitely a few who are annoyed with it's constant meowing, but they knew they couldn't do anything about it, and they're quick to mind their own business once you throw a small glare at them.
Suddenly, the cat find itself growing interested in him, the both of you jumping on your seats when it tried to reach for him with its paws. You apologized instantly, your hands dragging the cat carefully back into it's cozy little box, earning a soft chuckle from his lips.
"It's okay. I guess even a cat can sense when someone has a good taste in fashion." He reassured warmly, even managing to slip a joke, fixing the small crease on his clothes created by the cat's sudden interest in him.
He could feel your eyes boring on him, making him nervous at what could you possibly thinking, his brows furrowing slightly at the embarrassing memory of him being caught humming the song from your phone before flashing his mind, haunting his being at such a wrong moment.
"So..." He started, his hands clutching onto each other. "You finally decided to bring a cat home, huh...?" He cringed in his head, wondering if you recognized him even if you've never interacted before. He would probably need to change into another bus stop.
The small nod of your head made him almost sight out of relief. "I can't find myself leaving it alone all by itself." Your brows furrowed as you frowned. "Though, I am taking a bit of a risk here..."
He tilt his head. "What do you mean?"
"The landlord of my apartment doesn't really allow pets to stay inside." You looked down at the kitten inside the box, your fingers fiddling with the dirty fur of the poor thing. "If they did, I would have brought those other cats back at home."
He couldn't tell if you were joking or not.
He allowed a smile to form on his face. "Well, the fact that you are still bringing this one home is very brave of you."
You simply nod your head again, and the both of you went back in silence. There's just no more words that Jaewon could think of saying, but when he saw you glancing at him from the corner of his eyes, he somehow could tell what you were going to ask him.
"Maybe you would like to..." He didn't make you finished that sentence, already interjecting with an apologetic smile.
"I can't, I already have a cute little dog back at home." Plus, he doesn't know if Fresh would like having a cat waltzing around their home. Knowing how to take care of one is also out of the question.
"Then, maybe you could help me name it instead?" He blinked, not exactly expecting you to ask him such a request.
He saw you shrugged, trying to turn away nonchalantly and hide how flustered you seemed to have get. "I'm not good at giving names. And I can't keep calling it kitty."
A short breathless laugh escaped his mouth. "A name, huh...?" He let his eyes roamed the adorable face of the kitten, its black beady eyes glassy with tears as it stared up at him.
He hummed while cocking his head to the side, his brain wracking for a name that would suit it's features. His eyes then flickered towards it's ears, his eyebrows raising when he noticed the way the colors of it's fur forms into a shape of a heart.
"... I think Mimi suits them. What do you think?" He finally spoke after a while of thoughtful silence, relaxing back on his seat. He observed how you looked down at Mimi and muttered the name of the kitten, your lips drawing into a smile for the first time.
"I like it."
When the bus reaches your destination, he raise his hand to give you an awkward wave along with a smile. After days of lingering gazes and growing curiosity, he finally managed to get a conversation out of you.
He wouldn't be opposed to talking with you again.
But when he came back to the same bus stop he goes to everyday where he always sees you, you weren't there in your usual spot.
It made him feel weird not seeing you, but nonetheless, he drags his feet towards the bench underneath the roof of the bus stop, his eyes looking around for any glimpse of your familiar form, his knee bouncing anxiously as he slumped against the bench when there was no sight of you.
Where were you?
His attention was turned away from his thoughts when he heard a noise of a small object dropping on the ground. It made him moved his head down, noticing that the keychain on his bag had somehow loosen.
But before he could even reached his hand out to grab it, he was far too slow for one of the cats who were lazying about near the area, picking it up with its little mouth as it scurry off with his keychain.
"Hey..!"
He stood up in abrupt panic, abandoning his seat and ignoring the stares of the people when he suddenly yelled after the cat who now has his precious keychain on its grasp.
It took a while of chasing, but the cat seemed to have gain mercy on him when it stopped on the sidewalk it was walking on, mewling as it dropped the keychain from its mouth, falling yet again with a soft thud.
It landed in front of a pair of somewhat familiar shoes, his eyes going down from up only to see the face he have been looking for all this morning. Your eyes met his with surprised, probably not expecting to bump into him.
Both of your attention fell on the cat who begin pawing at the keychain on the ground, pushing it towards you like a gift as it meowed up at you.
He finally understood what was happening, running his hand through his hair while chuckling in disbelief. "So it was actually looking for a gift to thank you, but I didn't expect for it to be my keychain."
His words made you looked at him in confusion, muttering a small huh underneath your breath as you crouched down on your feet, petting the cat on its head. The keychain is now in your hands, gazing down on it with a soft awe in your eyes.
"This is really cute..."
"Oh? Do you want to buy one? The store I bought it from is nearby."
He didn't anticipate himself to ask you that, but he couldn't say he regretted it you looked so endearing looking around the store, smiling at the obvious happiness in your face as you're surrounded by an overwhelming amount of cuteness.
"Ah, here it is." He approaches you from behind when you walked closer to one of the shelves filled with dangling keychains similar to his, taking one in your hand that looks just like his.
"But doesn't this other one looked like it matches with this?" He stood beside you, his eyes squinting at the other keychain in your hand that indeed matches his.
"Are you going to buy it?" He acted like it didn't made his heart flutter, his chest warming up at thought of you matching with him. "I'll pay for it." He even offered.
He snorts as he saw how quickly you glanced up at him with shining eyes. Pretty.
"Really? You'd do that for me?"
He simply nod his head, hoisting the favored keychain from your hand, feeling how his fingers lightly brushed against yours as he came up to the cashier to purchase the small item.
"Here." He carefully dropped the keychain in your awaiting palm. "Now you know where to buy cute things for yourself."
"You aren't going to pay them for me?" You tilt your head playfully, earning a grin from him.
"I might." He shrugs, casting an innocent smile on his features. "If you let me pay to take you out on a date."
Your response was worth everything.
"Deal."
