i don’t think it’s new that mjf’s beef is with, and has always been, with the audience and in turn, what they reflect back about his feelings towards himself. i am glad that they’re pushing for it more by placing him against someone who disregards the audience, in the sense that despite the audience believing that hangman hasn’t done anything wrong, he still sees himself as someone deeply flawed who has behaved shamefully. and he’s trying to become someone better to prove himself worthy of the belt and representing what it stands for. max calls hangman a false infallible god, alcoholic, weak-minded (a man in wolf-sheeped clothing(?)), all of it hollow, because it’s more to get a rise out of the audience than from his opponent. he says he’s real, throwing hangman’s words from february back at him, but now disfigured. if they feel something for max, it’s because he made that happen and if he feels more in control of the audience, then they can’t hurt him either (“i’d rather be the devil”, etc etc).

it backfires in a spectacular way. when hangman calls him a gutless coward, it’s because hangman knows it’ll get both a rise out of max and the audience who chant it back. he’s lost the reins on them and they’re calling him what he secretly believes himself to be. he’s friendless, he’s lonely, underhanded, he has a belt but it’s not really his, and he can’t even control the audience anymore. he has no choice but to accept the call to challenge hangman for the belt to prove to them (and himself) that their name-calling can’t get to him. but it already did.

mjf is only compelling to me when we get him at his most low and sad and pathetic and it’s hangman that draws it out of him because he doesn’t fall for bullshit - he takes the bull by the horns and pushes forcefully back. i hope that max finally breaks under the pressure because this is what everything is leading up to: the veneer of anger burning away to reveal anguish. and the unmasking is done by a man who’s known nothing but despair, but is trying each day to make it better and more bearable.

Official promotional YouTube channels that upload free content from full matches to full shows and even livestreams of events help open up a world to newcomers unsure of what they like and not immediately ready to commit to a paid subscription of just whatever, give variety to those have been wrestling fans for years but only to what they've known on their tv and gives broke folks a source of entertainment, too. Respect to those shouting out paid subscriptions people can opt for instead, but sometimes people need to taste test at the buffet first. Regardless of the faults within any of these promotions, it is always worth making it clear there are always options and no one is the end all be all of where you can watch wrestling.
