Chapter Two
The heat of the day was rising rapidly as if to mimic the anger and frustration choking out Mona's every logical thought. She stared across the horizon at the expansive city skyline, the cars and people moving along, continuing there lives defiantly as her whole world was crashing down around her ears. She loved this city, Austin Texas had been her home as long as she could remember, but it's steadfast progression in time was very upsetting to her when she just wanted everything, and everyone, to stop, to just go away. The air was filled with the smell of aerosol as a few young artist spray painted some wild text on the large foundation wall she sat on. Her black mourning clothes were covered in white dust from her climb up to her perch atop Castle Hill where she had sat so many times before with such joy, but no joy was found in her today. There was neon paint on the toe of her now ruined stockings and she fought the urge to throw her high heeled shoes as far as she could into the distance.
She ground her teeth as she stood up, waves of loss and fury washed over her in equal measure as she thought about returning to the same empty apartment as she had lived in alone the last 9 months. Things were beginning to smell like a tomb rather than her mother's perfume long before the final decision was made to declare her dead in absentia. Still there was no indication in her heart that her mother, Helena, had passed away in the fire that had devoured the family fabric store months before, and she refused to believe that she would never see her again.
Tears welled up in her eyes for the umpteenth time that day as she got into her car and drove towards home. The memorial had been long and tedious, so many strangers offering condolences like an assembly line of awkward hugs. She wanted to scream at each of them for giving up hope, but instead she had just nodded and offered empty thanks as she tried to ignore the awful organ music and descended into a deep hatred for rose arrangements. What an ugly flower they were; like an infinite bloody spiral around malignant thorns. If she never saw another in her life it would be too soon.
Mona parked along the street and sighed in aggravation at the flower delivery vehicle parked in front of her door. She walked over to the gentleman getting out of the van and heading towards her steps, attempting to come up with some excuse as to why he had to take the flowers away with him. Looking at him closely for the first time made her slow her steps a bit. He was a very large man with large black boots and muscular arms; he moved like he worked in security or the military, his head and eyes turning back and forth taking in his surroundings . His shoulders were broad and he stood incredibly straight, on top of his head was a crimson red brimless cap which matched the dozen long stemmed red roses in his arms.
He noticed her out of the corner of his eye and turned on his heel to face her. The smile on his face made her stop in her tracks, it was more like a show of very large teeth than it was a greeting and something about it unnerved her. “Desdemona?” He inquired almost smugly.
“Yes. How did you know?” She fought the urge to take a step backwards as he reached out to hand her the roses, the thorns were uncut and poked at pricked at her bare arms.
He looked her up and down. “The memorial was today and you are dressed all in black.” He didnt seem terribly confident as he said this, his eyes shifting as if he was lying. “Now if you dont mind I will need you to sign these... oh!” He feigned a quick search of his body with his hands. “I left the clipboard in the van, it is right over here...” He walked away as if sure she was following.
“I meant how did you know my name was Desdemona, no one has called me that in years, not even my mother...” A horrible sound, half hiss, half shriek, rang out from behind her and she spun around nearly stumbling on her heels.
A stray cat, black and half bald with only one eye, sat on the top of the stoop to her apartment, hunched and hissing as if ready to do battle. She knew this tom cat, he had become almost a pet as she fed it every day and talked to him on occasion when no one else wanted to hear her crazy theories about her mother still being alive. She had named him Odin and had never, until this point, seen him act with any aggression what so ever.
She had just enough time to wonder what he was angry at before large arms like steel rods wrapped around her body, knocking the wind out of her and pressing the thorns into her chest tearing her dress and ripping into her flesh. The heels slipped off her feet as she was lifted into the air as if she weighed nothing while Odin, a flash of black fur and angry claws, was unceremoniously kicked away with a heavy black boot, and he lay completely still against the concrete where he fell.
Renewed by her anger at the injury of her frend, she tried to spin round to get her knees planted against the man's chest, but she froze as she saw the world spin and blur as if filled with heat fumes, gasping as much in shock as a lack of breath. Seconds before a thick black bag was slammed down over her face she swore she saw dark blood, old blood, pouring down the man's face from his hat which was so saturated it shined in the sun, almost as brightly as the huge razor sharp teeth that spread across his satisfied grin.
She was thrown into the van where another large figure, wreaking of the blood she could now smell cloying in the air, grabbed her and pulled her hands sharply behind her and tied with rough rope. The door slammed shut furiously, metal screaming on metal as it moved along its track, cutting off the last bit of light. The van started up with a roar and as the motor growled her throat swole with distress as she realized how she should have probably screamed at some point but now it was far too late.
She jumped, startled, as the bouquet of roses was thrown at her with much force, cutting across her neck and cheek. She could feel the cloth of the black bag over her head brushing against her lips with each gasp for air, her skin was on fire where the thorns had torn her open and she grit her teeth thinking about how much more she hated roses now. One sane thought welling up in the ocean of fear that had her he body caught in it's death grip.
His voice sounded similar to the screaming metal on metal of the door, “You dont want to go losing those now, wouldn't be polite.” He said as the vehicle pulled away. “They are a gift... from your mother.”
