Search Engine Optimization
Hey guys! I’m currently learning about search engine optimization, which I think would be a great thing to teach students. The following pictures are screenshots of a Twitter essay that I wrote explaining SEO (based on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tqg3F-8jBec).
You can read it from the beginning by scrolling down on this post (start at tweet 1 and read up to 8). You can also see my Twitter essay (gifs and all) here: https://twitter.com/christina_amico

Quote
School is a weird thing, I’m not sure if it works. There are a lot of teachers who don’t care about teaching, and it’s impossible for children to learn when they’ve got a teacher who’s just there for the money.

My Journey to Teaching
All About Me
My name is Christina D’Amico and I am a third year primary-junior Concurrent Education student majoring in Religious Studies. What this means is that when I graduate from my 5 and a half year program, I’ll have a bachelor of arts in religious studies and a bachelor of education, and I will be qualified to teach grades 1-6. I am already so excited!
How I Came to be Involved in Teaching
For as long as I can remember I have wanted to be a teacher. When I was a young girl, I would set up my dolls in my room and “teach” them. I would make lesson plans, homework sheets, and schedules...I even had picture day for them. I now recognize that my love for teaching at such a young age was a little bit extreme, but at least it motivated me to work hard in school!
Eventually, although my phase of playing with dolls ended, my love for teaching continued. Since I couldn’t teach in an actual classroom as a teenager, I spent lots of time working with children and youth in roles such as a hockey coach, a babysitter, and an extended day leader at an elementary school.
Although I loved those jobs, nothing can compare to my first day of student teaching during my first year at Queen’s. The joy that I felt when I was first called “Ms. D’Amico” is indescribable! I have been a student-teacher in a grade 1 and grade 6/7 class, and am currently looking forward to this my placement this year in a grade 4/5 class.
Social Media’s Role
I believe that social media can play a large, positive role in teaching. The generation of children that I will teach will likely be avid social media users and will be accustom to social media platforms. In order to engage my students and enhance their learning, I’ll be able to use social media platforms as part of my assignments and lessons. For example, I could do a social studies lesson where my students have to research Justin Trudeau’s Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook in order to learn more about his day-to-day job. A social-media scavenger hunt would be much more engaging than reading a textbook!
As a teacher, social media could also be used to communicate with my students and their parents. For example, I could have a class Facebook group where I post homework, reminders, and announcements. Or, I could have a classroom blog that keeps parents up-to-date on what their children are learning.
I believe that many teachers see social media as a obstacle to teaching and learning rather than a helpful tool, and I want to help to change that. In this area, I have been really inspired by my father, who works for the Ottawa Catholic School Board. He is well-informed on incorporating technology (and social media) in the classroom, and he always has new ideas.
The possibilities are endless!
