Alone
Warnings: Blood, Swearing, someone has a stick in his shoulder, death, lots of death, this does not have a happy ending, violence, can of beans, this is my first fic, this is just angsty.
1945
Bastogne
Snow crunched under the medics boots as he silently moved through the trees. His breath materialized in front of him as he passed what once was a pile of supplies, it had been hit by a German bomb, wasting everything. A can of beans was spilling its guts onto the white snow. He carried on, creeping through the trees, spotting George Luz’s foxhole, Roe crouched down.
“How are you doing on this fine lovely morning Doc?” Sarcasm rolled off Luz’s tongue as he gazed up at Eugene from his spot snuggled next to Warren “Skip” Muck and Alex Penkala. Even the bitter cold couldn’t stop Easy Company’s class clown from cracking a joke.
“Making the rounds, you’re my last stop, you boys need anything?” Roe questioned, filling the voice with his soft voice and Cajun accent.
“Nope, we made it through the night in one piece.” Muck spoke softly as Luz stared off into the distance, across the snow and through the trees in the direction of the German line.
“Let me know if you boys  see any morphine.” Roe said as he stood up and started making his way back through the forest to the foxhole he shared with Heffron and Spina. Guarnere spotted Eugene, popped up out of his foxhole and ran towards him.
Roe stopped and turned as Guarnere started “Doc, ple-”
“Guarnere, stop bothering me with your dick problems.” Roe said shortly, cutting him off. “I can’t help you, I’m sorry.” He was about to turn away from Guarnere when Lipton screamed “TAKE COVER” as the bombs started falling. Screams and shouts of medic fill the air as Roe took off running. He dived behind a fallen tree as earth and snow went flying feet from him. Roe continued running low to the ground towards Foley in his foxhole who had been struck by another damn tree exploding. He dove into the foxhole and grasped his bag, tearing it open. The Captain had a thick chunk of wood embedded in his leg along with smaller splinters scattered around.
“Save the morphine Doc.” Foley panted as Roe quickly removed the wood stick, powdered the wound, packed it, and wrapped it at lightning speed. Dirt goes flying overhead as Roe and Foley press themselves into their tiny foxhole. “I’m good Doc, go!” Foley said through gritted teeth. Roe rolled out of the foxhole and crawled to the next foxhole, dragging his body across the icy ground.
“Anyone hit!” Roe yelled over the cacophony.
“No! Keep firing at the line Malarkey!” Liebgott screamed at Malarkey.
Roe picked himself up and started towards the body several meters ahead that was writhing and Perconte next to him screaming medic. A tree exploded feet away and the next second a shell hit the ground. Eugene slammed his body against the ground as tree shards went flying through the air, he curled in on himself. The next moment he was up and sliding next to the soldier on the ground. Blood and shrapnel were everywhere, he went to work on the most pressing matter, his shoulder. Smith was writhing in pain as Eugene worked furiously, he sliced through the cloth with the scissors he stole from Perconte, and poured the sulfate onto the wound and packed the wound.
“Stay with me Smith, c’mon, stay with me.” The medic demanded as he lightly slapped his cheek. He worked frantically at his other injuries but the young private had lost too much blood and the light in his eyes was fading fast. “Stay wi-” Roe began but it was too late. The bombardment had ended but the calls for a medic had not. As Roe finished with the last one, stood up and heard Winters calling his name.
“Doc, come here for a minute.” Winters said as he walked through the trees up to the young medic.
“What do you need Sir?” Roe questioned as Winters came to a stop in front of him.
“Follow me.” The Captain said. Eugene followed him silently as Winters wove his way through the trees, the snow crunching underneath their boots. They came to a halt in front of two bodies. Spina and Heffron. The men he had huddled next to in their foxhole during the freezing nights: Spina, his fellow medic, who had helped him, and Babe, god Babe, his something.
“Ralph, Babe.” He spoke aloud.
“Spina was helping Babe, he had gotten hit by some shrapnel, it was minor, he was going to be fine, then they both got hit, Bull saw the whole thing.” He gestured towards Randleman who was resting against a tree. He continued, I’m sorry Doc.”. Winters walked away and entered a hushed conversation with the Staff Sergeant by the tree.
Eugene realized that he had called Edward Babe.
“I called you Babe.” Roe whispered as he sank to his knees next to the bodies. His bloodstained hands fixed Babe’s hair. “You should be laughing.”. His fingers ghosted the hand he had carefully wrapped, red against blue. He gazed at the face of the man he loved, “How was I supposed to know I’d never see you again, I was supposed to be able to tell you that I loved you, after Spina left on a supply run, I was supposed to have a chance to save you” Gene whispered to the corpse of the man he loved. He stood up, took one last look at Spina, his friend, and one last look at Babe, the replacement who had stolen his heart, and he walked away. Roe walked through the trees to their foxhole and sat down in the pit. He stared out at the front line and thought of Babe, how he had laughed and smiled that smile at him when he called him Babe for the worst time, and how he had told Babe and Spina about his grandma to comfort him, he thought  about giving Babe the chocolate. Mostly he thought of the warmth, he missed the warmth his fellow medic and friend had given him, he thought of the warmth that the man he loved, Edward, Babe had given him. Now he was alone and freezing in his foxhole, without the people he had shared it with, without having told Babe he loved him. He was just alone.
