Ben Wyatt the sitcom character ever. He became mayor of his town at 18 and bankrupt it making a winter sports complex. He’s terrified of cops. “Who hasn’t had gay thoughts.” He’s played by Adam Scott. He has a rollerskating kink. He writes Star Trek slashfic. He loves calzones. His knee jerk, subconscious reaction to someone calling Leslie a bitch was to punch him in the face. He buckled in his briefcase. Even he’s dancing. He named his calculator. He thought the idea of Leslie being a dictator was hot. He makes claymation. He’s like a milf. He made a board game. He’s a human disaster.

Frank Langdon's never been good at taking pictures.

Abby used to get mad at him for it, first when she wanted candid photos of herself for Instagram and then later when the kids were born. It wasn't on purpose, but the photos always ended up out of focus, his finger covering part of the lens. (His refusal to upgrade from a ten-year-old iPhone probably didn't help. But being realistic, most newborns looked all potato-y anyway. So they weren't really missing anything.)

He'd like to say that his lack of photography prowess didn't contribute to the breakdown of their marriage, but it’s only one in a long line of sins.

So when his mandated counselor, Shelly, suggests mindfulness practices, like journaling and meditation, he reluctantly tries his best. He knows he fucked up, and he wants to be better. Even when Shelly suggests taking pictures as a daily practice.

“Sounds pretty woo woo, I know," she says, already predicting his objections. “You're a salt of the earth guy, Frank. But a lot of my clients say this works for them. It's a grounding practice. Puts them in the present moment."

So, Frank tries. Initially with his cracked-screen iPhone, and then later with a shitty digital camera he gets from Walmart for $10. He brings it with him to the park—another thing Shelly recommended, even though he mostly just sits and people-watches. Most of the time he takes pictures of objects. No people, and especially not the kids or Mel—he doesn't want them to join the long list of things he's ruined with his touch.

Mel comes for walks with him, and she helps point things out to him that would make interesting pictures. A purple crocus. An interesting looking cloud. She asks him once, tentatively at first, why he won't take any pictures of her or Becca. She teases, but he can hear the hurt behind the joke: “We don't bite.”

But I do, he thinks.

To his surprise and despite his best efforts, Mel doesn't pull away. She pursues him for dinners and walks and nights on the couch. She spends as much time with him as they can both stand, making excuses to stay. She laughs at his off-color remarks—once she realizes they're jokes. But most of all, she doesn't seem afraid of his darkness.

Having her around starts to feel, actually, a lot like letting the light in.

So one morning, when Becca and Mel are sitting on the couch giving Marigold all the pets and attention she could ever want, Frank finds himself reaching for the camera, and he doesn't hold back. He snaps a photo of this moment, pure and true.

And when he looks back at it later, it's perfectly in focus.
