the one reason jade liked hanging out with jack so much, asides from the fact that they were neighbours, was because the other girl was just so fun as well. “you’re insane.” jade mentioned quietly, her chin resting in her hand as she shook her head at the other girl. “but yeah no–i went ice skating, which was always my favourite tradition. but if i tried to climb that damn tree–i’d have been arrested and i don’t really think that would be fun. at least–not again,” jade grinned, waiting to see if jack believed her or not.
“ i think the police are a bit more preoccupied with other threats to just let you off with a warning. like the dudes on 5th ave stealing santa. ” jack brightens a bit more genuinely at the mention of skating, “ but that’s a good one --- no licking rockefeller tree but it’ll do, i guess. ” she sips at her concoction of vodka and crystal pepsi, sweeping one hand out dramatically before her. “ my brother and i used to hunt for a different lake every year --- minnesota, land of a thousand lakes and frigid nights or whatever. ”

callie smirked at the girl’s comment. ‘’that’s a new one,’’ she let out a small laugh. ‘’so i suspected. i’m callie, i work at the resort but i’ve got the day off today and thought i would make the most of it. do you work here too or are you a guest?’’
“ JACK ----- don’t work at the resort, no. ” she says, pocketing her wax and pulling out her cork to aggressively rub the streaks of wax into the ski. “ probably wouldn’t make a lot of sense --- ” lifting her ski as if to emphasis her point, “ i don’t do downhill. i’m living with my cousin in town though ---- hence my existence. ”

“better version of licking a pine tree? why in the world would you…even have any version of that?” jade made another face and put the drink down on the ground, definitely not planning on having another sip of that again. but when she caught sight of the hot chocolate that jack was offering her, she ended up smiling. “that’s better, here–do you want that other one? since you apparently like licking pine trees?” a grin is on jade’s face as she tries not to burst into laughter over this once more.
“ it’s TRADITION --- ” jack says snottily, either for the dramatic effect of a joke or with 100% honesty --- you guess. she snatches the abandoned cup from the snow for good measure. “ you don’t make fun of tradition, jade, ” she chides, before downing a big gulp of deceivingly innocent clear drink. “ --- don’t you have any weird traditions ya do back in the city? run down the streets barefoot? try to climb rockefeller tree? ”

he laughed, well as much as he dared with his ribs the way they were. “no, not a tree, more like my little sister’s baby daddy, but that’s not my drama to tell.” he looked at the ice cream and cocked a brow, “no, as much as my father thinks i’m a disgrace, he’d never throw me out of an event like that. appearances, you know. now, that’s just impressive, my teeth would be killing me to eat that in this weather.”
sounds DRAMATIC --- far more than that jack really has interest in anyway. “ well then --- ” she comments, chewing on a larger bit of oreo that’d found its way into the ice cream, “ --- maybe you should stick with telling people it was a tree then; much more honorable. or this is where you tell me i should see how the other guy looks --- ” one brow quirks in a ‘yeah?’ sort of movement as she goes in for another bite of ice cream, shoulders rising in a shrug. “ my cousin runs the ice cream shop. i think she’d kick me out of her apartment if i wasn’t tough enough for ice cream in winter. ”

leighwards:
leighton isn’t often an attendee of these kind of parties, but this year she’s decided to at least try – well, an hour to show face and then a night in with the rest of her book can’t exactly cause any harm, can it? she’s on her way to the main bonfire when she finds herself holding more food than what she knows to do with after another employee of the resort had to duck out for a few moments. while she waits for the person to return, the australian starts offering out the food to whomever approaches to avoid looking so awkward in her confusion. “not exactly sure what’s in these, but at least they smell good.”
leigh’s right, they do smell delicious and she should probably eat something other than ice cream and hot chocolate while she’s here. “ WELL ----- ” she says, “ if i get poisoned i guess i can always sue, right? ” she takes the offered hors d’oeuvre from the other and bites into it with gusto. “ oh damn ----- you had any of these because i think i’m gunna need the whole tray now. ”

honestly, eli was tired and sore. his ribs hurt, his face was bruised, and his lip was split and he wanted to go to bed. yet, he had one thing on his mind in particular that was keeping him up, keeping him here, but the idea of acting on that made him feel queasy and not his usual confident self. he was unusually quiet and pensive, but he felt someone off to his side, approaching. “yeah?” he turned his head with a slight smile although it kinda hurt to smile right now.
“ get in a fight with a tree? you look TERRIBLE ---- ” jack says in way of greeting. she’s presently working her way through a double scoop of mint cookies and cream in a waffle cone, fingers getting a bit uncomfortably cold ( but it’s NEVER too cold for ice cream ). “ ----- i’m surprised they let you stay looking like that. ” there’s a hint of amusement in her voice all the same, clear indicator she’s not supposed to be taken seriously.

jade was happily seated by the fire, loving the warmth she was getting from the burning logs. someone familiar had given her a drink when she’d first sat down and only now had she decided to take a sip. only…it was the worst thing she’d ever put in her mouth. “what the fuck is that?”
“ oh it’s not THAT bad ---- it’s like... a better version of licking a pine tree. very festive. ” it’s true, but jack also can’t claim she had a much DIFFERENT reaction the first time someone handed her a mix crystal pepsi and vodka. “ c’mon, it’ll grow on you ---- maybe. ” and then because she’s not heartless, she thrusts out her cup of hot chocolate ( JUST hot chocolate, mind you ), “ here --- i guess if you REALLY wanted to get rid of that lovely taste. ”

‘‘ain’t that the truth,’‘ callie laughed softly. ‘‘i’ll have to remember that so i don’t feel as bad when i wipe out.’‘ the blonde adjusted her goggles. ‘‘you a skier?’‘ she asked as her eyes glazed over the girl’s ski in hand.
“ treat life like a new york subway --- ” jack says sagely, going back to rubbing wax into the bottom of her ski. “ --- you’re never the weirdest or worst thing around. ” she looks up again, and gives a noncommittal shrug. “ yeah --- of a sort. ” it’s the short answer --- better than explaining the merits of cross-country versus downhill.

jade stared at jack with widened eyes before shaking her head. “are you kidding me–tell me it didn’t work. because i swear jack, if you gave the idiot even some money or a new cone–we’re not friends anymore.” perhaps it was because they both understood each other’s work life so well–or because they were close in age, but jade felt a very close bond with the other girl, something she quite enjoyed. “because i get that enough at the cafe as it is, and of course if the manager’s around–we have to remake the damn drink.”
jacks gives an undignified snort, “---- of course not. nanc doesn’t care much for assholes anyway. BESIDES, from the way they were grossly overdressed they were DEFINITELY not wintergreen regulars. ” probably not the best way to walk through life, but maybe in this very specific instance it can be forgiven. she’s growing fond of the place, despite only being here a month --- she could see herself getting used to it all, irate customers and all. “ ---- so’ve you guys broken out the FESTIVE drinks yet? i can practically taste the peppermint hot chocolate next door. ”

“ can you believe what happened this morning? ” it’s a rhetorical question --- of course, jade understands working with the public like jack. “ some idiot ate half their cone and then tried telling me i made a mistake and owed them a new one. like seriously? when has that EVER worked? ”

“ oh my fucking god --- ” she aims a frustrated kick at the nearest ski rack making the few propped up in it rattle --- it’s later so there aren’t many around to see it, thankfully. “ UGH! ” there’s a second, harder kick before she steps back, one hand running through her hair in clear annoyance.

“ hey no, no, no --- you listen to ME, asshole. ” one hand sweeps out, hand still around one ski in a rather hazardous motion. “ maybe you ought to try skiing up the hills instead of down them for once. might actually fucking BUILD your character beyond DOUCHE BAG. ” she’s LONG perfected her glare and levels it up at the other, something like a condescending snort of laughter exhaled into the cold air before she turns on one heel of a ski boot in a flurry of skis and poles only to almost run into someone else.
