“Hm.” Was Mika’s only response, a big smile still on his face as he decided not to continue to tease Midoriya any further. “So.” He paused, putting a finger to his chin as he thought about how to say his next sentence, a simple question he wanted to get confirmed.

“I’ve heard around that you were, uh.. well.. a late bloomer, I guess? With your quirk, I mean. Is that true? Is it even possible to be a late bloomer?”

“Yeah!” Mika giggled lightly, finding Midoriya’s embarrassed stuttering to be kinda cute. “Weird, isn’t it? It’s not very good for a hero’s quirk, but it has it perks.”

“It seems to feel different for every single person.. I’ve never been able to experience it myself, since it doesn’t seem to have any affect on me, but everyone reacts in different ways. Sometimes their love is so strong they’d do anything to please the person they think they’re in love with.”

“You’re.. a lot softer than I thought you’d be.” Mika admitted with a shy chuckle. “I thought for sure your love would be.. well, as strong and as loud as your quirk is.” He didn’t mean loud as in the hearing way, moreso loud as in big and flashy, or something of the sort.

 “But you’re- well, soft. That’s nice.”

Pausing for a moment, Mika looked back at Midoriya with a grin. 

“Your hand is soft, by the way.”

Part of Izuku wants to reassure his classmate that if he’s already in the Hero Course, of course he has what it takes to be a Hero, strange quirk or not. However, a larger part of him is still howling in embarrassment internally which is making it hard to focus on anything else.

It feels a little like every organ in his body is cringing and he crumples inward like a paper ball, arms coming up to bracket his head protectively.

“Th-That’s-!“ Izuku doesn’t even know what to say to that. Maybe something like, I didn’t know I’d be like that either. Since, apparently he’s never been in love-love. That’s a strange thought, a little too intimate to share with a near stranger. The fact that he’d felt it first through a quirk of all things is…

Is it weird to be disappointed that it wasn’t real?

“…’s not… Callouses…” he mumbles finally, voice muffled against his sleeve. That’s the safe response. Izuku turns one palm slightly to show his crooked, scarred fingers. “Y-yours was, though…” No! Why would he say that?!

“Well, if you wouldn’t mind-- I was thinking maybe we could eat them together?” Mika could hardly contain his own excitement for making a friend. He was fairly new to the school so being able to make friendships with fellow heroes in training was a brilliant idea! He couldn’t wait to get to know each of the students in his new classes.

“Since classes are over, we could go to the common area and eat there. Oh- unless that’s not allowed?” Worriedly putting a finger to his chin in thought, Mika tried to recall the rules he’d scanned through before joining the dorms.

“Uraraka-san!” The excited boy called, approaching the girl with a hyper and upbeat attitude. It was his first week at the school and he hadn’t really gotten the chance to know any of the students, nor his classmates, but he had heard that Ochaco liked Mochi, so he went and got a bunch of different flavors.

“I heard you like Mochi- is that true? If so, I’ve got some extra from lunch!” It was a lie, of course- how could he tell her that he went and bought some just for her without being incredibly embarrassed? 

Blinking at the sudden call of her name, the girl turned to face the other, a slight slant of her head at his bounding energy. At least, until he mentioned her absolute favorite food. Her features lit up, a broad smile stretching across her features. “Yes, it is!” She chirped out enthusiastically, a beat passing before registering the remainder of his thought.

“You’re sure I can have them?” She was eager and could feel her mouth watering already. Her lunch had been fairly light that day, the end of the week meaning her funds were rather sparse, even with UA’s cheap menu. “You didn’t want to eat them all yourself?”

Huh. So this is how Izuku would react if in love- truly in love, with someone. Although, of course, it wasn’t real. Unfortunately, Mika’s quirk never guaranteed real, true love. But rather, fake love that felt true. It was disappointing, but such is the life of someone with a love quirk.

“Alright, you can stop now.” Mika moved his hand out of Izuku’s grasp and clapped his hands together, releasing Izuku from the grasp of the quirk. The feeling of being genuinely loved by Izuku was nice, and as much as he wanted the feeling of being loved to last, he wouldn’t ever take advantage of someone like that.

“Alright! Here goes nothing.” Mika reached out and gentle touching Izuku’s shoulder, and then on his own chest.

It was an immediate response, and Mika couldn’t lie and say he wasn’t interested to see how Izuku acts when he’s in love with somebody. It was always an interesting thing to find out about someone.

All at once, Izuku suddenly feels very calm and warm, but it doesn’t come to his attention as anything strange. Of course he would feel at peace around his favorite person. He waits for some kind of noticeable effect, looking down at the spot Mika touched, then back up at him in confusion.

“…Has it started?” he asks, subconsciously stepping closer so that their shoulders brush together as they walk. It feels natural, like he doesn’t want any distance between them, just like the urge to reach for Mika’s hand and intertwine their fingers. He gives into it easily, a happy flush warming over his face at the contact.

“If it didn’t work, that’s okay. You can try as many times as you need to, I’d still really like to see it!”

Perking up when Izuku questioned him about his quirk, he smiled and turned his head to face Izuku. He was a bit taller than the greenette, and had to look slightly down in order to see Izuku’s face.

“Would you like to have a demonstration? It’s nothing destructive or dangerous, really.”

Mika was always down to show off his quirk, especially with someone Izuku. It would be a treat to show it off.

“A demonstration?” Izuku looks back up at him in surprise, thinking over the offer carefully. He’s picking up on some mischievous vibes, but surely he can trust him at his word when he says it won’t be dangerous. And Izuku is always game for studying new quirks up close.

A hesitant smile crosses his face. He has no idea what to expect, but Tadase seems nice enough. “Sure, I’d love to see it!”

Mika couldn’t stop the amazement from showing in his eyes, brightening up and letting out a sound of awe. “Wow! That’s really amazing, Midoriya-kun!”

“It inspires me for sure.” He said with a big, doofy grin. “Deku.. Deku is cute, then.” He decided, mostly talking about the nickname, but the way he said it was.. odd. A little slip up in his Japanese happened every once in a while, afterall. 

“I want something nice like that for my hero name.. I was thinking Cupid, but I’m not sure if it’s very good.” He put a finger to his chin in thought. “Nothing else really fits my quirk, though..” Did Izuku even know what his quirk was? He wasn’t really sure.. He didn’t even know much about Izuku’s quirk himself.

Being looked at it with such bright eyes is embarrassing when it’s not coming from a much younger kid. He blushes lightly, the color only darkening when Tadase says that. He sputters a little. Cute? In what way?! Perhaps it was a mistranslation…

Luckily, hero talk is an easy distraction for Izuku. He shakes his head to cast away his nerves and finishes shouldering on his backpack.

“…Cupid? Like Valentines’ Day?” he asks curiously, leading the way out of the classroom. Maybe if he powerwalks fast enough, he can leave that moment behind him. “What is your quirk anyways?”

Usually he’d just observe for himself, but they haven’t had practical training scheduled yet since Tadase joined the class. Izuku knows it’ll be coming up soon though if Aizawa has anything to say about it.

“Oh! I’m so sorry!” Mika couldn’t help but giggle a bit at his own mistake. “I just heard so many different answers when I asked who the boy with green hair was- I got so confused. My mistake.” 

Mika himself still had yet to decide on a hero alias for himself. For now though, he just went by his name.  Although that did bring the question to mind- What did Deku mean? Since Mika had come from America, he did know a lot of Japanese, at least enough to be able to communicate with the people here, but he wasn’t quite sure what Deku meant.

“What does.. uh, Deku mean if you don’t mind me asking?” He questioned, giving Izuku a curious look before brightening up. “Ah! Yeah, that’d help a lot. I’m not really the best with directions, so being shown the way would be great.”

“No, no, it’s fine!” Izuku waves away the apologies with a reassuring smile. He starts to pack up his notebooks and school supplies into his backpack. “I’d probably be confused, too. Not a lot of people use their hero names outside of the field.” Not that this was a hero name for him when it was at its peak usage, but oh well.

The next question comes when he’s shouldering on his bag and he pauses with one strap still dangling loosely. Huh, Tadase really doesn’t know that deku is technically an insult? He speaks Japanese so fluently, it’s easy to forget he’s an exchange student. Maybe later someone will tell him, but Izuku decides to explain his version of it instead.

“My Deku comes from ‘dekiru’, like ‘You can do it!’ It’s to tell people that I won’t ever give up, and hopefully inspire them to keep trying, too.” His smile widens into something bright and proud. “That’s the kind of hero I want to be, after all.”

“Ah, good!” Mika let out a sigh of relief, glad that he wasn’t mistaken. That would’ve been an embarrassing mistake.

“Yeah, that’s me too! I’m Tadase.” He quickly explained, giving the other a gentle smile. “Your dorm room.. it’s uh, next to mine, right?” Or maybe it was that other green haired kid, Deku? “Unless it was Deku- if so, I’m really sorry to bother you. I just-I don’t remember where my room is...” He confessed. “But I remember seeing you there- or, uh, someone with green hair at least.”

“Midoriya-kun?” The unsure and hesitant voice spoke as he approached Izuku’s desk. He had only just recently started, and was still having a bit of trouble navigating his way through the dorms. His room was already set up and stuff, and he’d been there at least twice by now since he’d only been at the school for two days, but.. he wasn’t exactly great with directions or finding his way around the school. Hell, he’d even been late to every single class he had.

He recognized the greenette, however. At least he thought it was him from the back of his head. He had asked a few students what his name was, getting the same answers. ‘Deku’ or ‘Midoriya Izuku’. So, he assumed there were two different people in the dorms called Deku and Midoriya. 

“You uh, you are Midoriya, right?”

Izuku looks up at the unfamiliar voice, quickly placing it to the unexpected transfer student that they’d received after the first semester. Most of the class has been in a tizzy over it, since all of the international students were in Class B, for some reason. Izuku hasn’t even gotten a chance to greet him yet with all the questions he was most likely fielding about America.

Looks like the new student beat him to it, though.

“That’s me!” he confirms with a friendly smile and a short nod. “And you’re Tadase-kun, right? Nice to finally meet you.”
