Walls Behind-the-Scenes MTV Special
I don’t know if most people knew that MTV UK aired a longer making-of special for the Walls music video. It’s insightful and interesting, and the only copy I’ve seen was recorded on periscope on Twitter. These are the highlights (time refers to periscope). The original tweet was deleted, but the videos are now uploaded to Vimeo, part 1 and part 2.
0:53 Charlie Lightening mentions that logistically, it was easier to shoot in Morocco because the vastness of the space allowed them to build multiple large sets at once, so that all the shooting could be done in one day.
1:37 The foreman on the set states that 20 people worked on building the sets all at once.
2:25 Given the scale of the desert, Louis says that “naturally it feels more epic and more cinematic.”
3:23 Walls is a performance video, not narrative-driven like the previous three videos for KMM, WMI, and DLIBYH.
3:53 Charlie mentions that music videos of the 1990′s often had “surreal” elements. Both Charlie and Louis thought elements like the door in the middle of the desert made the video “dream, trippy, interesting visually.”
5:06 Louis sitting on the chair on the wall was his “favorite idea.” He and Charlie agreed on pulling the camera out to “reveal” the height of the chair.
6:04 Charlie mentions the iconic shot of Liam Gallagher sitting on the chair on the wall of the Oasis mv for Live Forever, which is a “strong visual.”
6:50 Charlie and Louis fool around very adorably on the set. Louis jokes that sitting on the chair has exacerbated his “recurring knee injury.”
7:42 Charlie mentions the epic skyline in the desert as the “sun’s going down, it’s getting cold” when they shoot the main performance of the band.
8:08 Louis says that the shot shows “me in the light of where I am now, it’s absolutely incredible.” “As we go through different dreamy rooms, each room representing a moment in my life, it’s important to show kind of who I am now.”
8:36 Charlie says he’s “always loved the bit at the end of 2001 (movie directed by Stanley Kubrick) “where the floor is a “big light box.” Charlie likes the contrast of the modern feel of the light box within the landscape of the desert, giving it an “otherworldly effect.” Lol at this Stanley Kubrick/2001 anon that I got the day after the music video came out.
9:19 Charlie and Louis explain that the whole video is a concept of reality vs. “outside of reality.” “Different moments in the video replicate different moments in my life.” “The middle 8″ is where the lyrics fit perfectly into his past in One Direction. It’s a nice transition as he’s “proud of where he came from” and the visuals “transition into me as an individual stepping into my own band.”
10:09 Louis jokes that in that particular shot, “Zayn looks shorter without the platform.” Charlie says, “It’s a performance video that still has little narrative bits.” Louis says fans love reading into the narrative, but the truth is the song is called Walls on an album called Walls and he’s sitting on a wall.
15:48 Louis says as with anything creative, you need to find a small group of people who understand you.
16:15 Charlie says Louis’ Walls videos were made in the “old school way of working with people to develop an idea creatively over several videos.”
17:00 Louis calls KMM “one of the most important singles and video moments of my career.” It was “written as a deliberate statement of intent” and was the first piece of narrative about the story of the “lad and girl.”
17:52 Louis talked about the DLIBYH music video as “different” for him because he was involved in the narrative itself. It was an “exciting day” full of “adrenaline.” He says that DLIBYH “answers the questions from the first two videos.
18:38 Louis talks about how he was always very “engaged” with One Direction’s music videos, but those videos “had to be relatable to 4-5 lads.” “Now I can have a say in how the video looks and get involved creatively.” It makes for long days!
19:29 The stage with the target was built specifically for the video shoot. In this scene, Louis describes “ballroom dancers around me and I’m kind of existing around them.” He then swerves into a discussion about his suit, which is unusual because he’s “been chavvy all my life and wears a suit three times a year.” He describes it as a “special treat for the fans.” “I love that. Fans love it.” Charlie gave the dancers notes prior to the filming, but he didn’t know what to expect before the filming.
20:08 Both Charlie and Louis describe the “red room” as a “throwback to KMM.” The “people wearing masks” evoked the “main character,” Joe, of KMM. “We’ve seen him in that mask.”
21:00 Louis describes the people in masks as feeling “trippy, scary, like a nightmare.” Charlies says that “seeing all the people wearing masks move as one” gives a “creepy feel.” It gives a nice contrast to Louis on the wall and the ballroom dancers.
21:19 The final scene filmed was the “fire” wall. Louis excitedly shouts, “Light it up! Now we’re talking!” Charlie describes it as “in keeping with the Walls element.”
22:03 Louis ponders that even though all the previous videos “have been amazing,” there is “something special about” the Walls video, with the fact that they had “purposefully built sets.” “It feels proper.”
Some nice gifs from this special: x x x
These gifs remind me of this funny post. Louis is so charming.

Do you think Louis will get his time to shine....
I was a larrie for a while and every time I'd see sentences like "oh Louis will get a chance soon" " Louis time to shine will come" ..... And these were by louie larries bc h leaning larries don't really care about Louis and just want him to do manager or bts work...
I unlarried a while ago...bc I just grew up ig it's just very weird speculating about someone's life especially for someone like who found the idea of obsessing over celebrities wierd and obsessing over their love life was the epitome of madness... Idk why I fell into the Larry ship hole....
But I was pretty into the whole 1d thing and Larry like I never was a fan girl of anything major (except for hp but again I was never into a fandom cuz of it.. It just me reading ho books and watching movies.. And getting hp stuff just wasn't this Obbsesive and j didn't really share it with anyone ) ......
But now it's just disappointed in myself for spending so much time money and energy into something which doesn't even make me happy anymore and I get growing out of things but this doesn't feel like that... (For example I stopped supporting jk Rowling after her whole transphobic comments and shit I sold all my hp books and merch but I have no bitter feelings towards it or anger towards myself like if a hp movie is on tv I'll watch it ) but it's not like that with 1d .... I look back at 1d and it's bittersweet... I can't enjoy the mvs or the music.... It just feels wierd....
Same with h he annoys me sooo much i always liked him the least... Larry was like the only redeeming quality of his to me (he seemed too narcissistic for my liking)
So.... The point of alll this ranting is how do u remain positive.... As a louie...
Watched sooooo many celebs on hslot today it did give me a sour taste in my mouth
I've never really had been in a fandom (for any shows or celeb) so 1d was like the first thing where I actually liked someone and THEN they became famous and I got to make loads of friends n shit so.... The turning of events in the last 6 years disappoints me soooo much
And ik I make it sound so dramatic but I just needed to rant also don't post this it'll just bring drama.....
I just needed to rant in hopes of not feeling so bitter about things :)
If you read this absolute vomit of words this far I truly respect you. Also thankyou for actually reading this . Hope u have a good day and only good things happen to the ones who truly deserve it
Hello!
Harry Styles is now so saturated and inescapable in pop culture that he actually feels oppressive to me. Of course, I say this as someone who dislikes him and his tactics, so I understand my negative bias and I don’t expect others to feel the same way. To me, Harry is a source of an emotional trauma that’s constantly rubbed in my face, mostly because of my personal experiences in this fandom. It would be easier to walk away. Unfortunately, I’m not that kind of person.
Having said that, I would say all of the other 1D guys have some post-Harry Styles, post-1D traumatic syndrome in their own personal ways, just expressed differently. Even Niall’s casual joke has to be done in a way that’s complimentary to Harry, and that itself feels (to me) like the oppressive reach of industry power, a type of trained self-censorship that reifies the structure of power.
(I won’t go into detail about Liam, Louis, Zayn etc. because it’s all been documented ad nauseum.)
For a 1D fan, to see the 1D men’s relationships revealed as tiered power dynamics is disillusioning, but this is industry 101.
Bands have broken up before. The Beatles often talked shit about each other. It can get divisive and ugly. But before the internet, industry didn’t have the instantaneous and overreaching power of digital manipulation that they have now. Harry’s alignment with Google and Live Nation is emblematic of that consolidation of power.
Louis is an intelligent person who must work inside this framework — he isn’t separate from industry either. Louis has only acknowledged his difficulties in oblique ways, “Right. Let’s go again.” “6 years of build up energy waiting for this moment” “Who the fuck’s gonna stop us?” “No major label, no radio play, no promo.” — because of the same self-imposed censorship that I mentioned before. What else can he say?
Louis channels his trauma creatively, into his songs, and like he says, he’s lucky to have a fandom who will listen and support him. It’s a tightrope act in some ways, one that he’s been walking for six years. The fact that all the guys are still able to make music, find their audiences, and expand their own tastes and circles of friends— their survival alone, despite the Styles war machine— is remarkable.
My point is that Louis is continually making his own chance, over and over, despite many obstacles. His personality is one of optimism and persistence. He seems to draw a dedicated fanbase with his values, and from what I can see, the percentage of solo fans is increasing. The chance to perform live is really pivotal for him. I think the landscape for Louis will look very different at the end of 2022.

An article on Louis has been published on Guinness World Records’ website! 18.11
In December 2020, Louis Tomlinson (UK) broke the record for most tickets sold for a livestreamed concert by a solo male artist (current year). During the pandemic, the singer sent his fanbase into a frenzy and sold 160,000 tickets worldwide for his Live from London charity concert. Tomlinson's concert was livestreamed on 12 December 2020 from an unknown venue in London, and shared on the concert platform Veeps.
At the time, the British singer and former member of international sensation One Direction had just kickstarted his solo career with the album Walls. With eighteen songs performed, the event surpassed the hour and raised more than $1 million (£755,000). The sum collected was then distributed to four charities: Crew Nation, FareShare, Stagehand and the Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice (which is based in Sheffield, UK).
However, that wasn't all.
Tomlinson's touring crew also received a portion of the proceeds after the difficulties of the 2020 pandemic, which put a halt to the live music industry for almost two years. The 18-song set featured tracks from the debut solo album Walls (released at the beginning of 2020), as well as the live debut of the song "Copy of a Copy of a Copy" which was hinted at for the first time ever during the concert's video teaser. On this occasion, the singer also performed three covers of beloved One Direction hits such as "Little Black Dress". In an era of great changes, it's also important to mention the emotive impact and the resonance that Live from London had for Tomlinson's fans, as well as the great importance of live concerts in these unprecedented times. It's no surprise, then, that Tomlinson's fans referred to this unexpected charity concert as "a gift".
