her own children were likely running their nanny ragged at the moment and the thought of them had her wishing she wasn’t currently preoccupied. she offered the young princess a kind smile. “no, certainly not, though the comparison is always evident. and how old is your youngest? if it’s any consolation, the screaming and crying eventually ends, though the lack of staying still part last forever, unfortunately. food it is then,” at the sound of the girls stomach, she let out a laugh, “and by the sound of it, something filling.” elodie sighed. “not particularly, no. they can’t seem to come to terms on a singular plan.”
“ nearly seven months. ” her eyes seemed wistful. “ i am patiently waiting for those days. ” a small chuckle escaped her lips. “ perhaps i should have eaten more this morning. ” xiuying’s lips pursed at the other’s response. “ i take it everyone wants something else ? i like to think we will all be able to figure something out, eventually at least. ” there was no doubt that everyone’s priority was themselves and their country. or at least, that was the case with her. she simply wanted germany and china out of the crossfire.

“would you like a glass?” he asked, gesturing to his own glass of red wine. “it’s been quite a day.” the king commented. most of the negotiations taking place ended up in yelling matches. whose voice could overpower everyone else’s? by the end of it all, all he walked away with was a pounding headache.
there was a part of her believing that she’d be stuck in paris for some time. she figured negotiations would be far from simple, especially after years of war and bloodshed. grudges were easy to hold and exceptional and clouding judgement. “ sure, but just a little. i usually prefer white wine. ”

He sat out in the gardens with his book in hand reading. He had found a few moments where he had time for himself between negotiations and just meetings with royals from other countries he hadn’t had the time for himself. He managed to sneak away from everyone and grabbed his favorite book finding a quiet place in the gardens. He looked up from his book as he heard someone, “Oh I thought perhaps someone from my staff had found me.”
“ not quite. ” it had been the third time she was out in the gardens. the fresh air felt a thousand times better than muffled voices indoors. someone could cut the tension within the walls with nothing but a butter knife. perhaps everyone under the same roof was not a good idea. “ but they may come out at any time. ” her eyes peered over, in an attempt to read the words in his hands. “ what book is that ? ”

“It’s not working, my dear friend. I can see it, my betrothed Liam has told me that people only want power & that no one cares of peace.” Katerina rested her head in her palms, wondering if this cycle of blood & war had an end at all? “I only want for my people to live without fear of getting robbed, punished or killed. Is that too much of me to ask?”
“ he may have a point but i believe peace is desired or else why bother with all of this ? ” a finger pressed deeply into the ground. “ no. i agree. our people deserve better. they deserve to live without fear. ” lungs expanded as she took a deep breath. “ compromises need to be made for peace but i don’t think anyone is willing. ”

they had come a long way. he didn’t think about it often, but five years of marriage had definitely left an impact, not just on him, but on her as well. he could feel it. as she was standing there, only dimly lit by the moonlight that illuminated the gardens, he was taken back to when he had first seen her. it was surreal to think of the things that happened between then and now. apart from the obvious, that they had kids now, they also acted differently around each other. he had fun at first. even picked up a word of chinese along that way. it wasn’t fun anymore.
her german wasn’t perfect, but her voice was as familiar as his mother tongue, despite her not saying much. “ sit with me. ” he gestured to the spot beside him. she didn’t need to say anything or do anything for the matter. he just needed a moment of familiarity; of home. and that was what she was. “ it’s a beautiful night. there are so many stars visible. ” he said, while looking upward for once. he knew she could barely talk to him. he reminded her of her duty and responsibilities. at least that’s what he thought was the reason. “ 星和月 ”
she moved quietly, the only sound coming from the rustling leaves of trees. her head nodded. the sky was always beautiful and always a constant, no matter where she went. it looked the same when she was in china. it looked the same when she was in germany. and it looked the same now, when she was in france. there was something oddly comforting about it. never once could she frown at the sight of twinkling stars.
her lips curled into a smile as she turned towards him, her husband. “ 真的好漂亮. ” her response was almost immediate. truth be told, she missed the days they’d stay up learning each other’s language. she enjoyed it. “ Ihr chinese ist sehr gut. ” the switch in language was almost automatic, though she hesitated slightly towards the end. she wanted to get the pronunciation as right as she possibly could - show him that she had adapted well. when her parents had told her she’d be married off to a german prince, she was surprised. an arranged marriage had always been on the table, but she never thought it’d be to someone from another country. though, with the alliance it had made some sense.

“nej, nej, please stop.” the queen’s temples were throbbing and at this point, she would’ve done anything to make it stop. she ran a hand along her face before she turned to the advisers in front of her. “perhaps we can take a small recess for lunch, then pick this up again after?” it came out like a suggestion, but the finality in her tone told them that it wasn’t up for debate. she didn’t mind dealing with the smaller politics of it all, but with them all shouting over one another, it was unbearable. excusing herself, elodie stepped out the large double doors of the room and let out a deep breath before spotting a familiar face. “these meetings remind me of raising children, each shouting to make their opinions matter. walk with me? perhaps we can get something to eat, or a strong glass of wine.”
mention of children made her wonder if hers had been awoken yet. thankful for the three she has could be an understatement considering the stress and pressure to have a son. xiuying had actually wept when he was born; tears of relief and pain. “ you don’t need to explain children to me. i’ve still got my youngest screaming and crying while the other two can’t seem to stay still. but yes, i could use some food. ” a hand rested on her abdomen as she heard a light grumble. “ i take it, not much progress is being made ? ”

“Не, не, не. Не съм изплашена, просто съм притеснена.” The Bulgarian princess said, as she continued on her way down the rocky path to the gardens. Once there, she sat down, legs crossed underneath her heavy dress, as she glanced up at the person who was keeping her company. “Native language outbursts are the worst, I know. I was saying that I’m worried that’s all. Peace is very fragile & all I have ever wanted was for things to be peaceful. It’s not working & it’s driving me insane.”
“ it happens to me too, though i’ve been trying harder to keep my lips sealed. sometimes i can’t tell if i’ve actually said something or just thought it. ” she shifted her body almost instantly when the corset pinched her side. “ you don’t know that it isn’t working. things take time, good things take a long time. it’ll all work out. ” 或不會 she couldn’t help but think. a hand sunk into the grass underneath her, tugging slightly on some of the green blades.

“Your Highness,” Joan sighed and shook her head. “If we are still here in order to negotiate peace treaties, the war is far from ended. Relativism is well and alive, and so is the illusion that love and peace wins. This war might have ended but there can very well be another and I am sure you know how easy that can happen. So what I am proposing is more like a back-up plan in case your allies decide to turn on you in the future. Would you rather be prepared, Your Highness?”
“ but don’t you believe, your highness, that if anyone were to catch wind of an allegiance between the two of us, they would start to do the same. alliances are formed in preparation of war and, if i’m not mistaken, we’ve finally ended one. a back up plan may be a semi-decent idea but it could unravel everything we’re working at. don’t you agree ? ” her head tilted slightly.

“That is what I am concerned about, Your Majesty! My country may be small comparing to yours but our location can and will provide a deciding point when war breaks out.” Joan leaned forward on the wooden table. As far as her gown allowed her. “The smallest, tiniest thing matters when drawing the line between winner and loser.”
“ the war has ended. ” her words were firm but there was a flash of doubt in her eyes. peace could never last an eternity. battles and arguments always pushed through. her brown eyes glanced at the edge of the table and, consequently, the seat the queen had been in. “ so i’m not entirely sure what you’re trying to propose. ”

it was night, and the german prince couldn’t sleep. his restless nature had him go outside instead of trying to fall asleep, and soon he found himself in the gardens. there was a sense of serenity to them when they were empty, so he sat on one of the stone benches and observed the world around him. a much needed breath of fresh air. the sound of footsteps had him turn is head, however. he thought he’d be alone, but with this many people gathered, he couldn’t be the only one unable to sleep. “out for a walk or just to watch the stars?” he then broke the silence with a question, followed by a bright smile. “here i thought i was the only one who couldn’t sleep.”
sometimes she couldn’t help but wonder if she was where she wanted to be in life. it was the right place, there was no doubt. there were long nights when she’d lay awake, staring at the dark ceiling above and contemplating. half the time she didn’t even know what she was thinking about. but never once had she dared toss and turn. docile. that’s what her parents had told her to be before sending her off. it had been the only actual piece of advice she received from the two and it was one she remembered. as long as there were no issues, things would be peaceful.
eyes widened as a foot moved back slightly. her mouth fell open and closed a few times before she could find her voice. “ it’s just taking me some time to get adjusted.. ” her german still held the slightest hint of a foreign accent. even after being married for five years and having three children, xiuying never quite knew what to say around him. it had always been theodore and xiuying but never together, always fulfilling their duties separately.

tai.
tai did not like this castle. he didn’t like any castle, to be clear, but he especially did not like this one. it felt to stiff to be here. the clothes on his body hanging off his body in an odd way, the years on the run in different countries caused his body to change along with him actually growing into his limbs. “ what have you gotten yourself into, tai. ” he mumbled to himself, wringing his hands together before coming around another identical hallway. he was still lost. so fucking lost in this maze of a castle. “ excuse me, i’m sorry. i got myself lost.. i’m just trying to find where they put most of the monarchs? i know once i get pointed the right direction, i’ll find my room. ”
xiuying turned slowly, first her torso and then her legs. right shoulder barely shifted up as her head shook slightly. “ i don’t really know how to explain it - with directions. i could take you there. i was going to go back anyway. ” hands were folded together, resting in front of her figure. she turned around and her feet moved slowly, but not as much as they once did. lotus feet had never been something she wanted. and no matter how painful the process had been, she kept her mouth shut. a symbol of her status, her mother had proclaimed. it only ever seemed inconvenient now.
