once i dreamt that i was watching a documentary film in high school english class called 'the best pig at watching'. it opened on a pig staring motionlessly at something offscreen. a narrator said 'this is the best pig at watching'. it then was struck by lightning and the narrator said 'the best pig at watching has died. i now take you to the second best pig at watching'. the documentary went tn another pig that was afloat on like an ice floe in an ocean, staring at something offscreen. then the ice floe sank and the narrator said 'oh dear. we now take you to the third best pig at watching' and it just continued like that with various pigs in dangerous situations staring off-camera until they died, to which the narrator reacted with mild disappointment and taking the camera to the next pig. this just kept happening until i woke up

deadass saw a cringe comp video that said at the beginning "some of the videos are actually funny, ironic or heartwarming because I want you to use your own judgment and learn critical thinking"

the way "your own name" is thrown into the gonermaker sequence is honestly genius and it's so weird that it tells us so much about both the game and gaster. because think about it- when you're playing deltarune blind or mostly blind for the first time, coming off of undertale, and you're asked to NAME YOUR VESSEL, you don't know what kind of game deltarune is, and you're just guessing, based off of your experience of undertale, that you're supposed to put your name, because that's what you're meant to do with chara in undertale. it's the game's celebrated fakeout that gives you a more powerful experience of the coffin room, the true lab tapes, the chara no mercy monologue, etc.

so you put your name. and then deltarune immediately asks you for your own name. just like that, without any fanfare or interceding questions. and it gives you pause. you realize for the first time that you, the player, are a markedly different presence than this vessel of yours, and that maybe it isn't even supposed to be you. it's the first sign you get that deltarune isn't undertale- at least, it was for me. it's such a neat little way to show that something's off.

and the implications it has for gaster... whoogh. it's the way gaster's name is all he has left in this world, the way undertale will not let you steal it for the fallen human and crashes the game to teach you a lesson (and deltarune does the SAME THING!!) because when you're outside of time and space you do absolutely anything you can to make your presence known, even if that's just keeping your name for yourself no matter what, and now he's sought you out across dimensions and worked so hard to get you here because you are the only person who can truly know him anymore, and he asks you for your name, so he has something to put on your save files, and so he can thank you for your time. your choices may not matter in this world, but he still wants to know your name. kill me
