It makes me so mad how excited I was for Belinda. To see a companion who didn't buy into the hype and the mystique that often surrounds The Doctor, who didn't see him as this infallible hero but as this flawed and potentially dangerous man, who never fell in line or at his feet but stood in front and asserted herself as an equal, who isn't in the TARDIS by choice and has a life of her own as a single woman in a high-pressured job that she still wants to get back to despite the time travel and the adventure, because she too gets to save lives every day even back on Earth and she doesn't need a Time Lord to do that - it was so incredibly refreshing.

And the issue is, while Belinda continued to call the shots for at least the first five episodes of the series, they dropped the ball with her characterisation as early as the second episode. For her to be so critical of The Doctor at the end of episode one, and so immediately perceptive of his ability to endanger those around him for the sake of his own pursuit of adventure, and yet for her to already abandon that notion and trust him entirely by the end of the next episode, to the extent that by the end of the series she is completely unfazed when on several occasions her instincts were proven to be correct, is not only a massive change in characterisation, but also a colossal waste of such a compelling premise.

And then for her character to be reduced not only to being the mother of The Doctor's child, but ultimately completely rewritten so that they were brought together so that she could be Poppy's mother - and choose to leave on that premise also - is so unbelievably insulting and disappointing. Varada is wonderful. Belinda is wonderful. The dynamic between the actors and the characters is one of my favourites in a long time.

Belinda and Varada aren't the only ones who deserve better after this series (I could write entire essays about Ruby and Fifteen), but I really thought we were onto something and while Belinda will always have a place in my heart, I'm just gutted the series and the character ended on this note.

oh also. was this an intentional reference by RTD? bc if so it's uber mega disturbing that the dr repeats almost the same line Original belinda refuted but then this belinda who has been Changed and rewritten by the wish is okay with it. and the original situation was even dealing with consent! she's upset the dr scanned her DNA without asking! then in Reality War she's literally been given a child without consent and it's all cool? WHAT DID RUSSELL MEAN BY THIS. I PUT A CURSE ON HIM FOR A THOUSAND YEARS

Eurgh. I've sat with the finale now and it hasn't done it any favours. Honestly it's just gone and spoilt my opinion of the rest of the season too now lmfao. Like the whole time I was looking for the good and trying to overlook the bits I didn't like- but ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHH. IT WAS SHIT. THAT SEASON WAS SHIT. It was such a massive waste of so many amazing actors. Just badly written nostalgia wank sucking itself off over how woke it was despite featuring genocide apologia The Episode, constant snubbing and mistreatment of characters of colour outside of the episodes featuring Black writers, and then finished itself off with a 2 part attack on the bodily autonomy of people who can get pregnant. Fucking epic.

you know what's bizarre? poppy was a real person. i feel like i'm going insane here. like in-universe poppy was a real child with her own life before she was retconned into being belinda's daughter. what the hell

okay. i need people to understand the main issue here. ncuti gatwa is the first (full time) black doctor. his entrance was overshadowed by david tennant. his entire run has been the least watched run, many of you admit you did not watch his era. now, after only 16 episodes and a few specials he has regenerated and all people are talking about is billie piper. do you really not see the issue at all? and don't even get me started on what they did to belinda! i'm so BOGGLED by the amount of disrespect thrown at fifteen. he barely got to BE HIS OWN CHARACTER. we barely know him and he's gone. unreal.

I don't really have the headspace or energy to do a proper rant but changing Belinda from a like strong willed person who wants to go home and not travel with the doctor by choice, into A Mother Who Wants To Return To Her Child is such fucking bullshit.

Idgaf if she's the Doctor for 1 episode or 1 decade she should've NEVER been cast. I'm TIRED of his constant glorification of white blonde femininity at the expense of Black characters. 🌹stans hunted Martha for 40 days and nights for saying this but she's 100% correct. MOVE ON!
