“Believe me, its a surprise to us all, Daiyu.” Yukai chuckled, dropping the formalities now that he was chatting with the familiar young girl. “Me, studious? Daiyu-ah, it warms my heart for you to give me this much credit.” Yukai was practically glowing, no humility in his countenance despite his words. “It is merely a stroke of luck–a great stroke of luck that I managed to evade the chopping block and enjoy such cuisine with these fine disciples. Imagine it as… a black crow sneaking itself amidst a flock of pristine white swans.” Yukai guffawed at his own analogy. “Are you on your way to get another serving? What a coincidence, so was I!” With a cheeky smile, Yukai inched closer to the Huang girl and joined the line behind her. “Do me a favor, Daiyu, keep an lonesome old man like myself company and lets wait together, ne?”
“So~” He tapped the bottom of his chin, as if in a thoughtful manner. “It really has been too long since we last caught up. How is everyone back home? I trust old man Huang is keeping well. Most importantly…” His eyes lit up with his perchance for gossip. “How is that rascal Lian? If he’s doing his part well, then I trust the matrimonial could be any day now, oh ho~”
Daiyu covered her mouth politely as she let out a daft chuckle--the imagery of the lanling sect disciples as white swans seemingly a perfect tableau. “A fitting image.” She rolled her eyes discreetly, making sure he was the only one to witness her display. She didn’t want to be confused as an unruly, shameless girl after all. “I shall keep you company as long as you keep your hysterics to yourself? I can’t have your shamelessness corrupt my delicate sensibilities.”
“Father is..” She paused, a grimace briefly crossing her features, “as stoic and disgruntled as always.” Daiyu bowed to the girl who served her a second helping, smiling her thanks before moving to the side, waiting for her friend to receive his own. “Marriage will happen soon, I’m sure. Though, it’s been a few years since I’ve spent some time with Young Master Lian. I’m sure he’ll be quite surprised when our paths cross. I have grown significantly after all.” Daiyu smirked at Yukai, “Unlike you who hasn’t seemed to mature a bit!”

weiyukaixx:
The sweet bean soup went nicely down Yukai’s throat. Ah, the tang of sugar, what a rare treat from the Gusu Lan Sect. Yukai may not have the best sense of taste, but that didn’t mean he couldn’t appreciate the Sect’s pleasant gesture.
Yukai had abhorrent taste buds, unable to distinguish flavors between good or bad, sweet or bitter. It started when he was little– His parents were rarely around, and even when they were, they seldomly restricted their son’s diet, seeing how he was all chub and cheer despite the garbage he regularly consumed. Where Yukai was concerned, food was food, whether it be the finest delicacy in the realm, or a tossed banana on the road; so long as it was edible, it was welcome in Yukai’s glutton stomach.
If Yukai were to be honest, he was uncertain about his chances of passing the regulation test for a while there. Sure, he read the list before he came (after all, it was important to respect the rules his beloved’s sect–Yukai took that as a sign of his maturity, oh ho), but he was never the diligent type when it came to studying, even as a student. He was more of the motto: study smart, not hard. ‘Reading’ in this case really meant cramming for 30 minutes on the last stretch of the road to Gusu Lan. Fortunately, it seemed Yukai hasn’t grown too forgetful with age and his brain was still comparable to a spry spring chicken.
Ah, the soup was delicious. Yukai’s stomach growled, craving a second bowl. One portion was never enough. What was the rule again– ‘no more than three servings per meal’? Yukai contemplated whether he could negotiate a second bowl with the server if the sugar was negated. Yukai was debating this predicament when the familiar colors of the Huang sect came into view.
He approached from behind and gently touched the top of her head with his empty bowl in greeting. “Why, if it isn’t the future Lady Jiang.” Yukai’s buoyant voice filled the air. “Long time no see, Ms. Daiyu. You’re looking lovely as ever. You’ve passed the regulation test with no problem, I see~”

Sweet Bean Soup. A true delicacy from the Gusu Lan Sect--a surprise given how plain a lot of their other dishes were. Though she was not one to complain about food-- taste did not matter if it sated hunger. Being from a smaller sect in a location that made trading and hunting difficult in the winter months meant that she was well used to hunger pains. Never enough to cause health concerns--but enough that it was noticeably felt.
Daiyu let her eyes take in the other disciples in the banquet hall, all proof that they had passed the appropriate regulation exams and earned their spots in the prestigious school. Daiyu was determined to carve herself a reputation as a capable and powerful cultivator and was fully prepared to study as hard as she could.
...Her growling stomach drew her attention away from her thoughts and with a sigh, she ordered herself a second bowl. Being cautious to follow the rules. As she was waiting, someone bopped her on the head, and a smile graced her face shortly after, “I’m rather surprised to see that you have passed the exam. You never appeared to be the studious type, Mr Wei Yukai.” Her voice echoed teasingly as she eyed her friend.

Did he see her coming? Sort of. Could he have stepped out of the way to avoid this collision? Probably. So why didn’t he? Because she might be pretty, of course!
The lady’s eyes were downcast and through her bangs it was difficult to make out her features. Sijun, having been blessed with so many eyefuls of beauty today, wanted to test and see if his luck would hold for another round.
Indeed, it worked out, she was quite lovely. A second later, he found out, also potentially deadly.
“Careful with your weapon, little sister.” Their hands both moved quickly. Hers, along with a dagger hidden under the thin layers of her sleeve, went towards his neck. His, went around her waist. “It’s been too long, Daiyu!” He grinned, pretending this semi-embrace was just his way of greeting an old friend even though let’s be honest, his hands would have ended up around her waist even if they didn’t know each other.
“You’ve gotten more beautiful since the last time we saw each other.” It was an earnest compliment. Last time they saw each other, it was approximately three years ago. She still had baby fat back then, making her look more like a girl and less like a lady. “Didn’t expect to see you here though.” The Lan sect didn’t typically invite many women to attend the lectures, especially from minor clans. At least, that was what he heard. “If they see you with the dagger, maybe they’ll kick you out. Then you can go travelling with me, how about it?” He really wanted a companion now that he was officially homeless.
Oh, but before they continue with that conversation. “Have you seen my brother? Tall, handsome, usually wears white…” Sijun’s voice trailed off as he realized his description matched every single man on this mountain. “I have to find him.” He dropped his arms from her and sighed, expression suddenly serious. “I wonder if he will scold me for leaving the forest, but I was actually dying.”
Daiyu lowered her knife so it was no longer pressing against his neck. This was a male specimen that she was rather fond of, one of the very few, and killing him would greatly inconvenience her. Instead, she rested a fond hand against his chest as she allowed herself to roll her eyes, comfortable in his presence, “Isn’t it against the rules to be running around Cloud Recesses like a Buffon?” She inquired mildly, a smile coloring her features.
“I passed the test.” She commented simply, “Not even the Lan Sect could deny my marks without losing face.” Daiyu moved smoothly out of his arms, straightening out her robes and tilted her head, pretending to think of his offer, “Tempting--though my father would hardly approve of me rebelling against orthodoxy.”
Her good mood turned into concern when his expression changed, “No..I haven’t seen him. Are ok?” She only grew more concerned with his later comment, moving to grip his forearm, “Are you in trouble, brother?”

upon hearing her late introduction, he stills in his step. the first daughter? that explains all the snickering he had thought to disregard as mere ignorance.
“my sincere apologies, lady huang.” though he addresses her by title, his chin remains lifted in the opposite direction. “allow me to escort you to the ladies’ quarters.” then, without sparing a glance in her direction, he continues walking.
it’s only when he’s out of earshot of her fellow clan members that he speaks once more: “it’s not my place to tell you how to lead your men,” he begins, tilting his head ever so slightly to the side – almost as if to finally regard her, though his eyes remain downcast. “but it is your responsibility, as senior disciple, to instill proper etiquette. had i been someone of higher standing, their disrespectful behavior would not have gone without punishment.”
Oh how she found his behavior distasteful. The entitlement seeping from his every pore, as if he were somehow more worthy then her. Be it because she was a woman or from a smaller clan, she could only speculate. But if she were to lay a bet--it probably was a mixture of both that led to this frankly shameless display of disrespect. A pity, she had expected better from the oh so noble Lan Clan.
It could be because she was tired from the trip, or because there was no one from her clan to correct her behavior, but she felt herself becoming bold as she quickened her pace so that she was standing directly in front of him, blacking his movements as her eyes narrowed at him.
“You are right about one thing there, Young Master Lan.” She murmured, voice steady and calm despite the fact she wanted to stab him in all of his squishy parts until he bled all over his crisp, fancy robes, “It is not your place to tell me how to lead--nor is it your right to instill your sense of etiquette onto a different clan.” Daiyu let herself smile then, though it was a smile far removed from the vapid smile she had perfected over the years, “Though, please excuse my ignorance--I’m not quite familiar with the duties and responsibilities of the Lan Clan...however, is it commonplace to mistake a First disciple for a maid?” She tilted her head, unflinchingly.

Night Hunt
Daiyu enjoyed Night Hunts---they provided a perfect way for her to practice her skills without the looks of the other disciples from her sect. It saddened her that those she once considered friends as children, could turn into such simple-minded idiots after puberty. Which was partially why she parted ways from them once they entered the forest. Some may say that going off on her own was risky. But Daiyu was confident enough in her skills to manage decently.
...and even if she did run into trouble--it would be a quick call for help given the number of people currently in the forest.
Truthfully, it has been years since she has acted so rashly. Growing up had tamed a lot of her wild disposition, but there was just something about Cloud Recess, even with the stiff rules and harsh punishments, maybe the freedom of being away from home? that brought out her more daring side.
A branch snapped, drawing her attention as she poised to unsheath her zhaoxia, before relaxing her hand once she recognized the familiar features in front of her, eyes widening briefly in shock before smoothing out her features into a smile “Young Master Jiang..” She bowed politely to her fiance, a man she hadn’t seen since she was but a child, and him a teenager. “Please forgive my hastiness. I mistook you for a ghost...”

criminal behavior.
it has been a week since daiyu arrived at cloud recess. a week of reflection and settling into a new environment filled with structure and rules--all of which daiyu could appreciate. though three thousand seemed a bit excessive. still, this was an opportunity for her to truly sharpen her cultivation skills..and avoid unpleasant responsibilities and uncertainties. oh how she sometimes wished she was born a male, instead cursed with society's judgments all because she didn’t share the same parts like others.
she was sharply brought out of her thoughts when another body bumped forcefully into hers, and with instinct, she let one of her daggers slip from her sleeve--moving to poise it at the threat’s neck before the site of the familiar person caused her to pause, “ah. my apologies.”

he offers to welcome the visiting disciples, mostly because he has little trust in the juniors to do it well. the leaders did not agree with this sentiment; in an odd twist, they decided to send a number of the juniors – all main bloodline – to greet the major sects. to familiarize them, he reasons, since they’re next in line. despite this line of thought, he is, admittedly, a bit peeved with his assignment to greet the minor clans ( an outer disciple task, from his speculation ). but in the end, it’s diplomacy and courtesy over frugal matters.
the huangshan clan comes from the mountains – this is all he knows as he bows and welcomes them to cloud recesses. “we’ve lowered the temperature in your living corridors to accommodate the change in climate.” he tells this to the tallest man standing in front of the group. “if it’s not to your liking, ask one of the servants to have it adjusted. per policy, women will have to stay in separate rooms.” his gaze does not waver from the man as he speaks of @xxdaiyu. “make yourself at home. i will show her to the maid corridors.”
at long last, his eyes skim over to the young woman, brushing over her youthful face for less than second before dropping to her hand. strange that they’d gift a sword to a maid, but it’s not his place to question another clan’s practice. he turns away, his back now to her. “come,” he says, and nothing else.
it had been a long journey. the mountain they lived in was a fair distance away from cloud recesses, and the path was not easily defined. still, there was a sense of excitement from the other disciples, who were all eager to receive lessons from the legendary institution. being from a small clan, the invitation itself had been met with a huge amount of pride for her clan members. she would be lying if she hadn’t felt a fraction of that excitement herself. even if the thought of all the...regulations left an uncomfortable feeling in her core.
....that previous excitement quickly turned into annoyance when the lan disciple failed to act appropriately. daiyu could tell by the fidgeting and badly hidden veiled smirks of the others, that they were taking way to much amusement out of the disregard of the other, and it took every ounce of her upbringing not to roll her eyes in disgust.
instead she watched the lan disciple dig himself a hole, holding up a finger infused with spiritual energy, instantly silencing the others, “I do believe there has been a misconception.”daiyu began, voice soft but firm, “my apologies for not introducing myself sooner, my name is huang daiyu, senior disciple and first daughter of the huang clan.”

HELLO. My name is gabby and this is my lovely girl, Daiyu. Please read her about me section. BUT basically, my girl is from this small sect who has worked extremely hard to be recognized for her cultivating skills. She can wield a set of daggers like nobodies business and its kind of her specialty? But she also appears very prim and proper just with a huge raging hate-on for the world on the inside. please love her and hmu for plots.
