After merging with the suit, Tony realized he was able to eat some things that normal people couldn't, like crude oil.

He tries to stick to eating normal food, but when his energy is too low, or if he's managed to injure himself internally, he actually starts to crave the taste of motor oil.

Tony knows it very disconcerting to see him eat too, so he only eats in private or with people he really trusts.
