About Me
Hello, I am La'Ronica Craven, age 18, and I attend Wells College. On my first visit to this campus, I knew Wells College was the place I wanted to call my second home for the next four years. I'm a first-year majoring in Psychology and minoring in Education and am pursuing to be a Clinical Child Psychologist. I've always had a passion for helping others and I'm great with kids, they love me. I have an on campus job at the bookstore, where I currently work two days a week, on top of my job at Wegmans where I also work two days a week. Enough about me, lets jump into why I created this blog.
The purpose of this blog is to reflect on the voice, video, and letter multimodal assignments that I have completed in Fall 2017 for my Young Adult Literature course. To expose some of the different types of multimodal writing to people that may be interested in literature. I also created this blog to share my work from my Young Adult Literature course. I had spent way too much time on each of these assignments to not share them with others.
I hope whomever is reading this enjoys my work from my SC 101 course. I also hope that my blog inspires you to want to read one of these amazing books, no matter what age you are. Young Adult Literature is not for a specific age group to enjoy, so don't be embarrassed when you're attention is geared towards one of the books. Overall, multimodal writing was difficult at times because it's something that I'm not used to. I didn't give up when I made a mistake, I kept on trying and re-editing until the assignment was exactly how I imagined it would be. Overall, I enjoyed the Young Adult Literature course and the readings that came along with it. I was extremely excited to take this course and got exactly what I wanted with it. If I had to choose which course was my favorite all semester, the Young Adult Literature class would be it because the readings and different multimodal components within them made the class interesting.
I hope you enjoy my blog! :-)

Multimodal Voice Assignment
This voice multimodal assignment was the most difficult assignment within the Young Adult Literature course. The purpose of this assignment was to expose us to the voice aspect of multimodal components in books. For this assignment I had to pretend to be a character, from the book 13 Reasons Why by Jay Asher, calling another character within the book. The hardest thing to do with this assignment was recording fully without making any mistakes. Every time I made a mistake I had to start all over again, which was extremely time consuming. I did like the fact that I could pretend to be someone else, in a way it was like escaping my own life and problems.
This multimodal assignment connects to the Young Adult Literature course in that the 13 Reasons Why book was created as a bunch of cassette tapes for people to listen to. The tapes in 13 Reasons Why was created by Hannah Baker to potentially expose and let the individuals know that they have pushed her to end her life. Another connection is, in many cases, after these individuals hear their tapes they feel guilty or bad about what they have done. The purpose of my voice assignment was to make the teacher feel guilty or bad about not helping Hannah Baker. Suicide can be prevented, all people need to do is speak up, reach out, and help individuals.

Multimodal Video Assignment
This is a 13 Reasons Why book trailer that my friend Lea and I created together. The process included picking a main focus and the most interesting points of the book to grab the viewers attention and interests in wanting to read the Young Adult book. The most difficult part of this project was recording a series of clips from Netflix without having a glare from the light or having it appear shaky because one of us were holding the phone to record. Another thing that was challenging with this assignment was trying to find songs that really portrayed the feeling or mood of the book that many feel when reading it, especially when trying to get the movie clips to match up with certain parts of a song. This video assignment uses music, voice, and focusing in on certain people’s facial expressions to set the theme and mood of the book, which deals with very little happiness, bullying, and suicide.
This assignment was in relation to the book, 13 Reasons Why by Jay Asher and also Me, Earl, and the Dying Girl. The book trailer we created had used some of the techniques that Earl and Greg had used to create their videos or short movies. The similarity between the two books is that death is involved, with Hannah Baker killing herself and Rachel dying of cancer. This assignment was to educate myself and my peers about the multimodal video aspect of literature.

Multimodal Letter Assignment
This is someone’s personal story, but the point of sharing it especially in letter format is to let others know there are ways to get things off your chest. Some may think ‘well why would I write to someone I know and not disclose who I am?’ Great thought! Reason being is you know the individual very well and truth them and would like to vent about the problems that weigh you down. Yes, the person doesn’t know who you are, but you know they took the time to read it and listen to what you had to say. It’s better to get out your problems and thoughts rather than keeping everything in. Communication through the use of letters is more personal because there’s more thought into writing rather than talking. When talking in person you can’t thoroughly think about what you’re saying to reflect you and how you’re truly feeling. Writing someone anonymously gives the individual a sense of relief because they’re getting all their thoughts off their chests without potentially being judged.
This connects to the course because one of the books read was Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky where Charlie is writing to someone anonymously about his life. This book was written using letters dated in chronological order to portray the sense of it being personal, like a diary. Though, the majority of the book, he is just rambling on, it’s still his personal thoughts that he wouldn’t like everyone knowing about him.
